Portugal

Getting married in Portugal

Atlantic cliffs, wine valleys, white villages and islands — and a season that starts in spring and lasts well into autumn.

Seven places

Where in Portugal

Each has its own light, landscape and best months. Start with the one that feels like you.

Through the year

When to marry, region by region

Dark: the easiest months. Outlined: they work with some planning. Grey: the quieter, wetter or hotter part of the year there.

What each season brings

The legal basics

Three ways to say yes

What makes a wedding legally binding in Portugal, in short. The guide has the details.

  • CivilCelebrated by the civil registry, the Conservatória do Registo Civil — at the registry, or at another place if the registry agrees.
  • ReligiousA Catholic wedding, or one of another religion the law recognises, can have civil effect once it is registered. The church and the registry each have their own steps.
  • SymbolicAny place, any words, any celebrant — but no legal weight. Many couples sign the papers at home and celebrate here.

Before any legal wedding

The registry runs a preliminary process (processo preliminar de casamento) to confirm you are free to marry. Foreign couples usually need birth certificates and proof from their own country that they can marry, often translated and legalised — the exact list depends on your nationality.

Rules and documents change and depend on your nationality: always check with the Conservatória, and with your own country’s consulate, before you set a date.
