Portugal

Porto & Douro

Porto’s granite and river, then terraced vineyards along the Douro — wine estates, harvest light, long dinners.

Porto is a city of granite, blue-and-white tiles, bridges and port-wine lodges stacked above the river. Upstream, the Douro Valley — a UNESCO World Heritage wine region — folds into hillsides of stone-walled terraces.

The valley’s wine estates, the quintas, are made for weddings that last a weekend: a ceremony among the vines, dinner on a terrace over the river, a boat or a slow train the next morning.

Through the year

When to marry in Porto & Douro

Late spring and the harvest season, usually September into early October, are the valley at its best. High summer is very hot down in the valley — plan the ceremony late in the day.

  • SpringFresh green leaves on the vines and wild flowers on the terraces. Porto can still be rainy — the valley is usually drier and warmer.
  • SummerThe valley bakes in July and August while Porto stays mild, sometimes with grey sea mornings. Evenings on a terrace are wonderful.
  • Harvest and autumnGrapes being picked, then the vines turning red and gold. Estates are busy with the harvest — book early and ask what the day will look like around you.

Places

Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

  1. Wine estates in the valley

Manor houses among the vines, many with rooms for guests: the whole wedding in one place, sometimes over two or three days.

  2. Porto’s old town and river

Tiled churches, stone stairways, the bridges at dusk — a city ceremony or portraits between the ceremony and dinner.

  3. Granite chapels and village churches

In the north, faith is close to everyday life: small churches with gilded altars for a religious ceremony.

  4. Viewpoints over the terraces

High roads above the river for an elopement or a sunset portrait session with the whole valley behind you.

Light

How the light falls

In the valley the steep slopes put the river in shadow before the sky goes dark, so the last sun lies on the upper terraces — a good photographer plans the portraits up the hill. In Porto, dusk over the river and the bridges is the classic moment.

Travel

Getting there

Fly into Porto. The valley is a drive inland on winding roads, or a scenic train along the river — guests usually stay at the estate or nearby.
