The Douro’s working town, with wine estates on the slopes around it, one of them for up to 260 wedding guests, and Lamego’s Baroque staircase just over the hill.
Régua is where the Douro wine trade kept its books.
The Museu do Douro now fills the Casa da Companhia Velha, the old company’s house in what visitportugal calls the world’s oldest demarcated and regulated wine region, whose rules date from 1756, with a wine bar over the river and a restaurant, A Companhia. It is the valley’s practical town: buses and trains from Porto arrive here, the Historic Train leaves from here, and across the river, in the municipality of Lamego, the estates begin.
That makes this end of the valley the easier one for a large wedding: the guests reach it sooner, and one estate here takes up to 260 people. A day in Régua can take the couple up the 686 steps of the Remédios in Lamego for portraits in the morning, back through the vineyards to a ceremony at an estate, and on to dinner on a terrace, with rooms in the valley for everyone who wants to stay.

Ceremonies
On the south bank at Cambres, in Lamego, among its own vines. The Pacheca Group’s page lists weddings up to 260 people, in seven indoor spaces with gardens and terraces, and rooms for the guests on the estate; its largest hall, the Salão das Vinhas, is aimed at weddings and large events. Ask for its terms and for how it handles a civil ceremony.
Built in 1716, and one of the valley’s oldest estates, at Vilarinho dos Freires, in Régua’s own municipality, with a wine hotel. A wedding photographers’ association lists it among Portugal’s venues; its own site publishes no wedding page, so ask it directly whether and how it takes weddings.
The manor of Quinta de Vale Abraão at Samodães, in Lamego, now a resort hotel with a spa, is listed by several wedding directories, which give different numbers. We found no wedding page of its own, so ask the hotel what it offers today and whether it can be booked whole.
A Companhia, the restaurant inside the Museu do Douro’s building, advertises wedding meals from 20 to 120 guests. With a civil ceremony at the registry in the morning (€120 on a working day, November 2026), it is the simplest way to marry here: no estate, no shuttle, the river close by.

Portraits
A monumental Baroque stair of 686 steps on Mount St Stephen, with statues of kings, eight fountains and, halfway, the Chapel of Desterro, leading up to a sanctuary begun in 1750 and finished only in 1905. It is about 15–20 minutes’ drive from Régua. Avoid 8 September, the high point of the feasts, with fireworks and the Procession of the Triumph.
A viewpoint at about 640 metres, some 18 km and 25 minutes’ drive from Régua, with a small chapel at the top and a tile panel carrying Miguel Torga’s words about the valley. The view runs all the way round, over the river’s bends and the hills of several districts. It is for the end of the day: on 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 21:06, with golden light from 20:24.
The Museu do Douro’s wine bar looks over the water, and the riverfront in town is the easy first stop of the day, before you drive up into the hills.
In 2026 it made 51 trips from Régua to Tua and back from 6 June to 18 October, on Saturdays, Sundays and some Wednesdays: a restored diesel, five carriages from the early 20th century, 254 seats, leaving at 15:00 and back by 18:22. It is a way to give guests a day before the wedding, and the line’s terraces are what make the photographs. The 2027 season isn’t published yet.
Through the year
IPMA’s normals for Régua (56 m, 1981–2010) give average highs of 24.2 °C in May, 28.7 °C in June, 31.7 °C in July, 32.1 °C in August, 29.1 °C in September and 23.0 °C in October, with about eight days of 35 °C or more in each of July and August. Rain falls on fewer than two days in July and about five in September, then ten in October and eight in May. Nights average about 17 °C in high summer. May, June, late September and October are the months to look at; on 15 September 2027 the sun sets at 19:41, on a flat horizon, and the hills take it from the river sooner.
Porto & Douro, month by month
Practical
In CP’s timetable from 3 November 2026 the journey from Porto Campanhã takes a little over two hours, with a train to Marco de Canaveses and a replacement bus onward to Régua (07:30 reaching Régua at 09:35, 17:30 at 19:40). Most guests will drive or come by coach from Porto: count on that for the evening too, and check the timetable for your date.
Régua is on the north bank, in Vila Real district; Pacheca, Samodães and Lamego are on the south, in Viseu. That matters for the guests’ directions: check which bank your estate is on before you send them.
We found nothing published on weddings in the sanctuary. It is a place of pilgrimage, with its own telephone (+351 254 614 392); a Catholic wedding outside your parish needs the bishop’s licence through your parish priest, so ask them both before you plan one.
A drone needs ANAC registration and the Autoridade Aeronáutica Nacional’s e-AAN authorisation, and in the open category it may not fly over a gathering of people. Check any restrictions before the day, and ask the estate first.
Start the file at any Conservatória do Registo Civil or online at least a month ahead; you then have six months to marry. The fee is €120 at the registry on a working day and €200 outside it or at a weekend (November 2026), with the registrar’s transport on you. A foreign partner brings a certificate of capacity to marry under six months old. Our guide to getting married in Portugal has the steps.
Questions
Quinta da Pacheca, on the south bank at Cambres, gives up to 260 on its own page, across seven indoor spaces with gardens and terraces. Most other estates publish no number, so start with your guest list and ask.
It is a monument and a place of pilgrimage: you walk it like any visitor, and you should mind the pilgrims. For anything set up on the stairs, ask the sanctuary first. Choose a day other than 8 September, when the feasts fill it.
Yes, as passengers, and it makes a good day before the wedding. In 2026 it made 51 trips between June and October, leaving Régua at 15:00 and stopping at Pinhão and Tua; the fare was €60 for adults. The 2027 dates aren’t out yet: CP’s site and ticket offices will carry them.
For a large group, usually: it is nearer Porto, its replacement-bus connection runs later and the bigger estates are close. Pinhão, 27 minutes upriver by train, is deeper in the terraces with fewer rooms. See your guests’ numbers and the timetable first.
