Portugal

Alentejo

Cork oaks, olive groves and white villages under enormous skies — country estates for long, slow weddings.

The Alentejo is Portugal’s great open interior: rolling plains of cork oak and olive trees, wheat fields, walled hilltop villages and towns like Évora, whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Weddings here happen on herdades — large country estates, many of them wineries — where guests stay for the weekend and dinner goes on under the stars. Around the Alqueva lake the night sky is famously dark.

Through the year

When to marry in Alentejo

Spring and early autumn are perfect. July and August are the hottest months in one of Portugal’s hottest regions — still possible, with the ceremony at the end of the day and dinner after dark.

  • SpringThe plains turn green and fill with wild flowers; the light is clear and warm. The nicest weeks of the year here.
  • SummerGolden stubble fields and intense heat in the afternoon. Shade, water and a late timeline matter more than anything else.
  • AutumnGrape and olive harvests, warm days and cooler nights — the wine estates are at their best.

Places

Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

  1. Country estates (herdades)

Whitewashed farmhouses with blue or yellow trim, pools and olive groves: the whole weekend in one place.

  2. Wineries

Tables between the vines or in a cool cellar, and wine from the same land at dinner.

  3. Hilltop villages and old towns

Cobbled lanes, castle walls and huge views — beautiful for portraits and for a civil ceremony in town.

  4. The lake and the open plain

Water, cork oaks and a flat horizon for an elopement at sunset, or portraits under the stars.

Light

How the light falls

Big skies and a low horizon mean long sunsets and a deep blue hour afterwards. The midday sun is hard and high; the photographs everyone loves here are taken in the last hour of light, and under the stars.

Travel

Getting there

By car from Lisbon or the Algarve; the roads are quiet and the distances feel short. Estates usually help with transport for guests.
