How to find a wedding photographer in Portugal: every way compared

Instagram, Google, the big directories, award lists, your planner or venue, Lens & Vows and word of mouth — what each costs you, how photographers are checked, whether you can see free dates and what protects your money.

In short

  • Searching costs couples nothing on Instagram, Google, Casamentos.pt, Fearless Photographers, Junebug Weddings or Lens & Vows; the photographers pay the platforms — by subscription, by advertising or, on Lens & Vows, by a commission when they are booked.
  • Only some channels check photographers before showing them: Junebug Weddings asks for at least 2 years of full-time work and 30 weddings, Lens & Vows looks through three whole weddings, while a Casamentos.pt storefront is free to open and Instagram and Google check nobody’s work.
  • As of October 2026, Casamentos.pt — The Knot Worldwide’s Portuguese site — listed 2,822 wedding photographers in Portugal; the same group’s English-language WeddingWire page for Portugal showed six.
  • Directories and social media never hold your money: you pay the photographer directly, and the written contract is your protection. On Lens & Vows the 30% deposit is paid through the platform (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or MB WAY in euros), and the balance can be too, held until you accept your gallery.
  • You can see whether a photographer is free on your date before writing only where they keep a public calendar; on Lens & Vows every photographer has one, elsewhere you ask each of them.

There are seven common ways to find a wedding photographer for a wedding in Portugal, and none of them is simply the best. Each answers a different question: Instagram shows you a style in seconds, Google shows what past clients said, a directory shows you many names and prices at once, an award list shows who other photographers rate, a planner knows who is reliable on the day. It is normal to use two or three — find names one way, check them another.

Here is each one, what it costs you, how far anyone has checked the photographers in it, whether you can see free dates, and who holds your money. Platform facts are from each platform’s own pages, as of October 2026.

Instagram: the fastest way to see a style

Instagram is where many photographers post their newest work, and a few minutes on a feed tell you whether you like the way someone sees light, colour and people. To find photographers who actually work where you are marrying, search the place rather than the job: the town, the venue, the beach, the quinta — then look at the accounts behind the photos you stop at.

Its limit is that a feed is a selection. Nobody posts the dark reception room or the family group with someone’s eyes closed. Follower numbers say little about weddings. Before you go further with anyone you found here, ask for two or three complete galleries — the whole day, in order — and read what a wedding photographer costs to know what to compare.

Google and Google Maps: reputation, not style

Search “wedding photographer” with a place name and Google shows business profiles with star ratings and reviews. They are good for one thing above all: hearing from couples who have already been through it. Read the text, not the stars — when the review was written, what the couple valued, how the photographer answered a complaint.

Google’s policy forbids reviews that are not based on a real experience and reviews paid for, directly or in kind. The policy does not describe a check that each reviewer was a client. Under EU consumer law, applied since 28 May 2022, any business that shows consumer reviews must tell you whether and how it makes sure they come from people who actually used the service — so if a photographer’s own site shows reviews, it is fair to ask how they are collected.

The big directories: Casamentos.pt, WeddingWire and The Knot

These are one company, The Knot Worldwide, and for Portugal its Portuguese site is the one that matters: on 11 October 2026 Casamentos.pt listed 2,822 wedding photographers, most with a “from” price, star ratings and often a promotion. The same group’s English-language WeddingWire page for wedding photographers in Portugal showed six. Couples planning in English can still use Casamentos.pt — browsers translate it well.

  • Good at: breadth. Photographers, venues, caterers and every other supplier in one place, with prices to start from and planning tools that are free for couples.
  • The order of a list: the group earns from businesses, not from couples, so read it as a starting point, not a ranking of quality.
  • Reviews: Casamentos.pt checks reviews before publishing them — tone, no personal data, nothing offensive — and its conditions say it does not judge whether what they say is accurate.
  • Your money: you pay the supplier directly. Casamentos.pt’s conditions say it takes no responsibility for transactions between users.

Who owns which site, and what each charges photographers, is in Lens & Vows and the wedding directories compared.

Award and curated directories: Fearless Photographers and Junebug Weddings

Fearless Photographers ranks its paying members by the awards single photos of theirs won in the last four years; joining is open, and the awards do the filtering. Its Portugal page listed about 45 photographers in October 2026. Junebug Weddings lists only photographers its team accepts unanimously — at least two years of full-time wedding work and 30 weddings — with at most 20 per list, and the Portugal list is short. How each one chooses, and what it charges photographers, is in the directories compared.

Both are strong places to find photographers whose work stands out. Two things to keep in mind: an award is given to a single frame, and a portfolio of award-winners shows a photographer’s best moments, not their average day — the whole gallery still decides. And both are directories: Fearless says plainly that it only connects couples and photographers, so the booking, the contract and the payment are between you and the photographer.

A planner, or the venue’s list

If you have a wedding planner, ask them first. They have watched photographers work: who arrives early, who is easy with the venue team, who delivers on time. Many venues also keep a list of suppliers they know — sometimes a suggestion, sometimes a requirement.

  • Ask whether the venue’s list is required or a suggestion, and whether an outside photographer needs anything from the venue first.
  • Ask whether anyone on the list pays to be on it or pays a commission on bookings. It doesn’t make them worse; it is simply worth knowing.
  • A planner’s recommendation is still a recommendation: look at whole weddings before you decide.

Lens & Vows

What is true today: it is free for couples. Every photographer is approved only after a person on our team has looked through three of their whole weddings. Their pages show whole weddings rather than highlight reels, their packages with prices in your currency, and a calendar of free dates; the concierge shows only photographers who are free on the day you give it, and you can filter all photographers by region, style, language and budget.

You can write to a photographer before booking. Contact details stay hidden in messages until the deposit is paid — that is what keeps the deposit protected, and it is how photographers pay us for the introduction (why). When a photographer accepts your request you pay a 30% deposit through us (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or MB WAY in euros); our 15% commission comes out of it and is never added on top. The balance you can pay straight to the photographer at no cost, or through us in up to 3 instalments with a 5% payment-protection fee, held until you accept your gallery. The details are on payment protection.

We are new, open to couples only in Portugal so far, and we list photographers only — not venues or other suppliers. Compare us with every other way on this page; Lens & Vows and the wedding directories puts the platforms side by side.

Word of mouth

A friend’s recommendation comes with something no directory has: someone you trust, who watched the photographer at work for a whole day. Ask your friend for the full gallery rather than the album, and ask how the day felt — how the family photos went, whether the photographer was in the way, how long the photos took to arrive.

A way to combine them

  1. Choose the region and the month first. They decide who is near and who is free — see the best months, region by region and Portugal’s regions compared.
  2. Collect six to ten names from two different channels: one for style (Instagram, an award list), one for checking (reviews, a planner, a friend).
  3. Check free dates before falling in love. A photographer can only be at one wedding a day, and summer Saturdays go first — September and August are Portugal’s busiest wedding months (INE).
  4. Ask each one for two or three complete galleries from weddings like yours — how to choose a wedding photographer has the questions to ask next.
  5. Compare quotes for the same day: the same hours, deliverables and travel. What a wedding photographer costs has the checklist.
  6. Pay the deposit only against a written agreement, and know who holds the money. How deposits and payment protection work explains the options.

Questions couples ask

What is the best website to find a wedding photographer in Portugal?

It depends on what you want to check. Casamentos.pt has the widest list of Portuguese photographers with prices and reviews; Fearless Photographers and Junebug Weddings are selective lists ranked by awards or chosen by an editorial team; Lens & Vows shows whole weddings, free dates and handles the deposit. Many couples use one for names and another to check them.

Is Casamentos.pt the same company as WeddingWire and The Knot?

Yes. Casamentos.pt is part of The Knot Worldwide, formed when The Knot and WeddingWire merged in 2019, together with Bodas.net in Spain, Matrimonio.com in Italy, Mariages.net in France and Hitched in the UK. For Portugal the Portuguese site lists by far the most photographers.

Are Fearless or Junebug photographers better than others?

They are filtered differently, not guaranteed better. Fearless ranks paying members by awards their single photos won in the last four years; Junebug admits photographers with at least two years of full-time work and 30 weddings, by a unanimous team decision. Either way, look at whole weddings before you book.

Can we see whether a photographer is free on our date before contacting them?

Only where the photographer keeps a public calendar. On Lens & Vows every photographer has one, and the concierge shows only those free on your day. On Instagram, Google and the directories you send a message and ask.

Is it safe to pay a wedding photographer in Portugal by bank transfer?

Paying a photographer directly is common and can be perfectly fine, as long as there is a written contract with the date, hours, deliverables, delivery time and cancellation terms, and a receipt for every payment. Directories do not hold or refund your money. On Lens & Vows the deposit is always paid through the platform (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or MB WAY in euros).

How far ahead should we book a wedding photographer in Portugal?

As soon as you know the date and the place. Saturdays from June to September are the first to go — September and August are the busiest wedding months — and a photographer can only be at one wedding a day. On Lens & Vows you can send a request for any date from two days to three years ahead; the deposit, not the request, holds the day.

Do wedding photographers in Portugal speak English?

Many work in English, but check each one. On Lens & Vows every photographer lists the languages they work in and you can filter by them; elsewhere, look at the profile and ask. Remember the civil ceremony itself is held in Portuguese, with an interpreter if one of you doesn’t speak it.
