What a destination wedding in Portugal costs: the whole budget, item by item

Venue, catering, planner, photographer, video, flowers, music, hair and make-up, the ceremony and what your guests pay — published 2025–2026 ranges with their sources, and worked budgets for 30, 80 and 150 guests.

A ceremony set up in front of a country house

In short

  • A Portugal wedding planner’s 2026 guide puts a destination wedding at roughly €20,000–€80,000 in total; the guest count moves it most, because catering is charged per person.
  • Catering with drinks and an open bar runs about €140–€250 per guest at destination weddings (Wedding Planner in Portugal, 2026); Fixando’s 2026 estimate for a Portuguese couple’s 100-guest wedding puts catering at about €10,000, roughly €100 a head.
  • Exclusive use of a venue is usually a separate hire fee, published at about €3,000–€15,000 and up to €25,000 or more, before any food is served.
  • A civil wedding costs €120 at a Conservatória on a working day in office hours, or €200 outside it or out of hours (IRN fee table); a symbolic ceremony with a celebrant starts at about €400–€450.
  • Adding up the published ranges, 30 guests come to about €16,600–€55,900, 80 guests to €23,600–€68,400 and 150 guests to €33,400–€85,900 — before your guests’ own travel.

No official body counts what destination weddings in Portugal cost, so there is no honest national average to quote. Two kinds of numbers do exist. Weddings of Portuguese couples are tracked by wedding platforms: Fixando put a wedding for about 100 guests at €21,127 in 2026, up from €18,570 in 2025, and Casamentos.pt gives €12,000–€30,000 for about 100 guests. Planners and photographers who work with couples from abroad publish their own ranges, and those run higher — exclusive venues, open bars, a planner, often two or three days of events.

This guide takes the second kind, item by item, says whose range each figure is and from which year, and then adds them up for 30, 80 and 150 guests. Prices are as published in 2025–2026 and were checked in October 2026.

What does the venue cost?

Most destination weddings in Portugal happen at a quinta (a country or wine estate), a palace or manor house, a hotel or resort, or a beach or clifftop venue — choosing a venue describes each. What you pay for falls into two models, and it matters which one a venue uses:

  • A hire fee for exclusive use, with catering paid separately — common at quintas and estates. You have the place to yourselves; food, drinks, staff and often furniture are quoted on top.
  • Per-person menus with a minimum spend — common at hotels and resorts. There may be no hire fee as such, but there is a minimum number of guests or a minimum total. The Lopes Photography notes that Algarve venues often add catering minimums to the hire fee.

Before you compare two venues, ask each the same questions: is the fee for exclusive use, for how many hours, and with what included (tables, chairs, linen, a covered space for plan B)? Is there a minimum spend? Are rooms on site included or sold separately? And until what time can music play outdoors and indoors — the answer decides how long the party lasts, and how many photographer hours you need.

What does catering cost per guest?

Catering is the largest line in almost every Portuguese wedding budget, and the only one that grows with every guest. The published ranges:

What is quotedPer guestYearWho published it
Welcome cocktail, seated dinner, drinks and open bar (destination weddings)€140–€2502026Wedding Planner in Portugal
Catering including drinks (destination weddings)€150–€300+2026The Lopes Photography

Catering, low to high end€90–€3002026Pedro Pulido Photography
Venue and catering together, Portuguese couples’ weddings€60–€1302025Casamentos.pt

Two things explain the gap between the destination and the Portuguese figures: what the price includes (an open bar for six hours costs more than wine with dinner) and the venue (an exclusive estate staffed for one wedding costs more than a restaurant or a quinta that hosts every weekend). Fixando’s 2026 estimate puts catering for a Portuguese couple’s 100 guests at about €10,000 — roughly €100 a head.

When you read a per-person quote, check: how long the welcome drinks last, how many courses, which wines, how many hours of open bar, whether late-night food is included, how many staff, and the price of children’s and suppliers’ meals (if your photographer, video team and planner work through dinner, agree where and when they eat). At €140–€250 a head, every ten guests add €1,400–€2,500.

Do you need a wedding planner, and what does one cost?

Not every couple does. A planner earns their fee when you don’t speak Portuguese, can’t visit often, or are running more than one event — a welcome evening, the wedding, a brunch the day after. Published fees:

  • Full planning: €3,000–€10,000 (Wedding Planner in Portugal, 2026); “usually around €6,000 to €8,000 minimum” (Take a Vow Portugal, 2025); €8,000–€15,000+, or 10–15% of the total budget (The Lopes Photography, 2026).
  • Planning services of every scope: €1,200–€8,000+ (Pedro Pulido Photography, 2026).
  • Luxury full service for a 100-guest wedding: €18,000–€25,000 (Dream Weddings Europe, 2025).

Ask what the fee covers: the number of venue visits, supplier contracts, the paperwork for a legal ceremony, being there on the day, and whether the planner takes commission from suppliers.

What do the photographer and video cost?

Published ranges for experienced wedding professionals: €1,500–€4,500 for photography and €1,500–€5,000 for video (Wedding Planner in Portugal, 2026); full-day photography and video by in-demand professionals “often start from around €4,000 each” (Take a Vow Portugal, 2025). A photographer’s 2026 guide runs from under €1,000 for newer photographers to €5,000 and more at the top (Pedro Pulido Photography). Portuguese quote platforms, which mostly reflect local couples’ requests, average about €740–€887 for photography and €916–€1,050 for video (October 2026) — photographer, videographer or both compares them. What moves a photographer’s price — hours, a second photographer, travel, the season, the album — is in what a wedding photographer costs in Portugal; how much time to book is in how many hours of wedding photography you need.

On Lens & Vows every photographer sets their own price and you pay that price: a 30% deposit when they accept (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or MB WAY in euros), and the balance either straight to them or through us with an optional 5% payment-protection fee. How deposits and payment protection work has the details.

Flowers, music, hair and make-up

Flowers and styling

The widest range in the budget, because it covers anything from a bouquet and a few table jars to a ceremony arch, hanging installations and lighting. Published: €1,500–€8,000 (Wedding Planner in Portugal, 2026); from about €5,000, more for large installations (Take a Vow Portugal, 2025); €3,000–€12,000 (Pedro Pulido Photography, 2026). For comparison, Portuguese couples’ decoration and flowers: €500–€2,000 (Casamentos.pt, 2025).

Music

A DJ costs €300–€1,200 at Portuguese couples’ weddings (Casamentos.pt, 2025). Live bands at destination weddings “commonly start from about €4,000 and rise with band size, equipment and timing” (Take a Vow Portugal, 2025). Ask the venue first how late music may play: near homes, noisy events after 20:00 on weekdays — and at any hour at weekends and on public holidays — need a special noise licence from the câmara municipal (Decree-Law 9/2007), so many venues move the music indoors at a set time.

Hair and make-up

For one person on the day: €250–€500 at Portuguese couples’ weddings (Casamentos.pt, 2025); from about €600 for destination couples, more for the wedding party (Take a Vow Portugal, 2025). It is one of the lines rising fastest: Fixando counted a 33% rise in hair and make-up prices from 2025 to 2026, against 31% for photography and 28% for video.

  • Civil, at a Conservatória do Registo Civil: €120 for the process and registration, on a working day in office hours. €200 if the wedding is held outside the Conservatória or out of hours, plus the registrar’s travel, which you arrange with them. A prenuptial agreement adds €100 (or €160 for a non-standard property regime), and a certificate is €20 (IRN fee table). Documents from home — apostilles, certified translations — and an interpreter are paid separately; getting legally married in Portugal explains the steps.
  • Civil, with an agency doing the paperwork: from €1,195, including the official fees and a translator for the ceremony; from €1,295 with a symbolic ceremony added (Wedding Portugal, 2026 price list).
  • Catholic: the legal application through an agency from €650, with the priest and church booked separately from €300 (Wedding Portugal). Portuguese couples report €100–€200 for the church ceremony and a €100–€300 donation (Casamentos.pt, 2025).
  • Symbolic, with a celebrant: €400 plus travel (Lisbon Wedding Planner); from €450 (Wedding Portugal, 2026); from €940 for a package with ceremony design, an English-speaking officiant and a symbolic certificate (Love Gracefully, Lisbon & Sintra, 2026).

What do your guests pay?

Flights and rooms are your guests’ largest costs. Whether you cover any of them — or the transfers, a welcome dinner, a brunch the day after — is your decision, and worth making before the invitations go out. What a room costs, from Portugal’s statistics office (INE), per occupied room per night across all tourist accommodation:

MonthPortugalHighest regions
May 2026€130.90Greater Lisbon €171.40; Madeira €140.40
August 2025€159.20Algarve €217.80; Alentejo €174.80; Azores €165.90

These are averages of every kind of room in the month; a hotel near your venue on a summer Saturday can cost well above them, so block rooms early. On top, many municipalities charge a tourist tax per person per night: Lisbon’s is €4, up to seven nights (DECO PROteste, 2024). Two nights in a double room at May 2026’s national average come to about €262, before tax.

Three worked budgets: 30, 80 and 150 guests

To see how the lines add up, we took the low and the high end of one published range per line — the same suppliers for all three weddings — and multiplied catering by the guest count. It leaves out attire, rings, stationery, transport, accommodation and IVA where a quote excludes it. It is arithmetic on published ranges, not an average of real weddings.

What the table shows:

  • Small weddings cost more per guest. At 30 guests, the suppliers you need whatever the guest count — venue, planner, photographer, video, flowers, music, ceremony — make up three quarters or more of the total.
  • Large weddings are mostly catering. At 150 guests, food and drink are 44–63% of the total.
  • The ranges match what planners say overall. Wedding Planner in Portugal’s €20,000–€80,000 for a whole wedding sits around the same span, and Take a Vow’s €15,000–€30,000 for weddings under 80 guests overlaps our 30-guest column.
  • Leave out video and subtract €1,500–€5,000. Skip the planner and subtract €3,000–€10,000 — and take on their work.

What moves each line

  • Guests move catering, and usually the venue size and the flowers with it.
  • Exclusivity moves the venue: a whole estate for a weekend costs more than a hotel’s terrace with a minimum spend.
  • What the per-person price includes — open-bar hours, late-night food, wine — moves catering more than the menu itself.
  • One place for everything — getting ready, ceremony, dinner — saves transport and travel time, and photographer hours spent on the road.
  • The band or the DJ, and how late they play.
  • The planner’s scope: full planning or coordination near the day.
  • Several days of events multiply venue, catering and photographer time; see how many hours.

When the money is due

Each supplier has its own payment schedule, usually a deposit that holds the date and the rest before the day. One published example: Wedding Portugal asks 50% on confirmation, non-refundable, and the rest five days before. Read each supplier’s cancellation and date-change terms before you pay — the contract checklist lists what to look for. If you are only marrying the two of you, what an elopement costs has the numbers for a much smaller day.

Questions couples ask

How much does a destination wedding in Portugal cost?

One Portugal planner’s 2026 guide puts the total at roughly €20,000–€80,000; another puts weddings for couples from abroad with quality suppliers at about €40,000–€100,000, and a luxury planner puts an upscale wedding for 100 guests at €100,000–€130,000. Adding up one published range per line, 30 guests come to about €16,600–€55,900, 80 guests €23,600–€68,400 and 150 guests €33,400–€85,900, before guests’ travel. Catering is the line that moves most, because it is charged per guest.

How much is catering per person at a wedding in Portugal?

At destination weddings, published ranges are about €140–€250 a guest including a welcome cocktail, seated dinner, drinks and open bar (Wedding Planner in Portugal, 2026), and €150–€300+ including drinks (The Lopes Photography, 2026). Portuguese couples’ weddings are lower: €60–€130 a head for venue and catering together (Casamentos.pt, 2025). Check how many hours of open bar and whether late-night food is included.

How much does it cost to get legally married in Portugal?

The civil process and registration cost €120 at a Conservatória on a working day in office hours, and €200 if the wedding is outside the Conservatória or out of hours, plus the registrar’s travel (IRN fee table). Documents from your own country, their apostilles and certified translations, and an interpreter if you need one, are paid separately. Agencies that handle the paperwork publish packages from about €1,195 including the official fees and a translator.

How much does a wedding venue cost in Portugal?

Exclusive-use hire fees are published at about €3,000–€15,000 (Wedding Planner in Portugal, 2026) and €5,000–€25,000 or more (The Lopes Photography; Pedro Pulido Photography, 2026), with estates and palaces for luxury weddings at €15,000–€50,000. Hotels and resorts often charge per-person menus with a minimum spend instead. Catering usually comes on top of a hire fee.

Do we need a wedding planner to marry in Portugal?

No, but it helps if you don’t speak Portuguese, can’t visit often, or are hosting several events. Full planning is published at €3,000–€10,000 (2026), with some planners quoting €6,000–€8,000 as a minimum or 10–15% of the budget. Ask what the fee covers and whether the planner takes commission from suppliers.

Who pays for guests’ hotels at a destination wedding?

There is no rule: what you cover — rooms, transfers, a welcome dinner — is your decision, and guests need to know it before they book. For guests’ budgets: a room in Portugal averaged €130.90 a night in May 2026 and €171.40 in Greater Lisbon (INE), and Lisbon adds a €4 tourist tax per person per night. Tell guests early and block rooms near the venue.

Do wedding prices in Portugal include VAT?

Not always. IVA, Portugal’s VAT, is 23% on the mainland, and the Azores and Madeira set lower rates. Many supplier quotes say whether IVA is included or added; ask every supplier, because on a €20,000 budget the difference is €4,600.
