Azores

Nine volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic: crater lakes, hydrangeas and weather that changes every hour.

The Azores are nine islands far out in the Atlantic: green pastures divided by black stone walls, lakes inside old craters, hot springs, tea fields and cliffs falling into deep blue water.

They suit couples who want nature first: an elopement on a crater rim, a small wedding in a stone house, a swim in a hot spring the morning after.

Through the year

When to marry in Azores

Summer is the season: the warmest, most settled weeks, with the hydrangeas in bloom along the roads in early summer. The rest of the year is greener, wetter and windier.

  • Early summerHedges of blue and pink hydrangeas line the roads and fields. Long days, mild temperatures.

  • The rest of the yearRain, wind and dramatic skies. Beautiful for brave couples; flights between islands are more often delayed.

Places

Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

  1. Crater lakes and viewpoints

Green and blue lakes inside old volcanoes, seen from the rim — the islands’ signature photograph.

  2. Black-rock coast and natural pools

Lava rock, white surf and swimming pools carved by the sea.

  3. Stone houses and old manors

Restored farmhouses and manor gardens for a small wedding and a long dinner.

  4. Tea fields, forests and hot springs

Rows of tea, giant ferns and warm iron-red water — portraits nobody else will have.

Light

How the light falls

Cloud is part of the place: it softens the light, then opens for a few minutes of sun. Photographers who work here plan two or three spots and follow the gaps in the sky.

Travel

Getting there

Fly to São Miguel or another island directly or via Lisbon or Porto; small planes and ferries link the islands. Leave room in the plan for weather.
