Madeira

A green volcanic island in the Atlantic: sea cliffs, laurel forest and flowers in every month of the year.

Madeira rises steeply out of the Atlantic: green mountains cut by ravines, terraces of bananas and vines, waterfalls and the ancient laurel forest, a UNESCO natural site. Funchal, the capital, spills down to the sea in gardens.

The climate is mild all year, which makes the island one of the few places in Europe where a winter wedding outdoors is a real option. Elopements above the clouds at sunrise are its signature.

Through the year

When to marry in Madeira

Every month works. Spring and autumn are the easiest; summer is warm and dry on the south coast; winter is mild, with more cloud and rain in the mountains and the north.

  • SpringThe island in full flower. Mountain weather changes fast — a good plan has a high spot and a low one.
  • Summer and autumnWarm, settled days on the south coast and a warm sea. Clouds often gather on the peaks in the afternoon.
  • WinterMild days by the sea. Around New Year the island fills up for its famous fireworks — book well ahead or avoid those days.

Places

Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

  1. Peaks above the clouds

Sunrise vows on the high summits, with a sea of cloud below — the island’s most photographed elopement.

  2. Sea cliffs and pebble coves

Dark volcanic rock, white surf and green slopes falling into the ocean.

  3. Gardens and quintas in Funchal

Old manor houses with tropical gardens over the bay, for a ceremony and dinner with a view.

  4. Forest paths along the levadas

Moss, ferns and water channels in the laurel forest — portraits in deep green.

Light

How the light falls

Light changes by the minute here: hard sun on the south coast, soft cloud light in the forest and the mountains, and the clearest air at dawn. Photographers who know the island read the clouds and move.

Travel

Getting there

Fly into Funchal, directly from many European cities or via Lisbon. Strong winds sometimes delay flights — arrive with a spare day before the wedding.
