Cliffs over a deep blue sea

In short

  • Lisbon & Sintra, Porto & the Douro and the Algarve each have an international airport — Lisbon, Porto and Faro; Madeira flies into Funchal and the Azores mostly into Ponta Delgada; the Alentejo and Comporta are a drive from Lisbon.
  • The Algarve is the driest in early autumn: Faro averages 22 mm of rain in September and 56 mm in October, against 68 mm and 149 mm in Porto (IPMA normals, 1991–2020).
  • The inland Alentejo is the hottest in summer: Évora’s average high in August is 33.5 °C, against 28.8 °C in Lisbon and 24.8 °C in Porto (1991–2020 normals).
  • Madeira is the mildest in winter, with average highs around 20 °C in January in Funchal; the Azores are the most changeable, with rain in every month, and keep their clocks one hour behind the mainland.
  • May–June and September to early October suit most of the mainland; the Alentejo is best in April–May and from late September, and the Azores from June to September.

Portugal is small — but a palace in Sintra, a wine estate above the Douro, a clifftop in the Algarve and a crater lake in the Azores make four very different weddings. Here are the regions couples marry in most, side by side: what each feels like, when it is at its best, how guests get there, and what the official climate figures say. For month-by-month detail see the best months, region by region; for venue styles, choosing a venue.

What the climate figures say

Average daily highs and average rainfall from the 1991–2020 climate normals of the Portuguese weather service (IPMA), at one station per region. They are averages over thirty years, not a forecast for your day — but they show the differences clearly. Every month, with rainy days and hot days, is in Portugal’s wedding weather, month by month.

StationHigh, JuneHigh, AugustHigh, OctoberRain, SeptemberRain, October
Lisbon26.1 °C28.8 °C22.8 °C39 mm111 mm
Porto22.7 °C24.8 °C20.7 °C68 mm149 mm
Évora (Alentejo)30.2 °C33.5 °C24.1 °C34 mm82 mm
Faro (Algarve)26.8 °C29.2 °C23.3 °C22 mm56 mm
Funchal (Madeira)23.7 °C26.8 °C25.2 °C23 mm91 mm
Ponta Delgada (Azores)22.4 °C26.0 °C22.6 °C78 mm118 mm

Two things stand out. Rain returns everywhere in October, most in the north and on the islands, least in the Algarve. And summer heat is a matter of distance from the sea: the coast stays in the high twenties while the Alentejo’s interior passes 33 °C on an average August day — and the Douro valley, inland from Porto, is much hotter than the city.

Sunset, region by region

Golden-hour portraits happen in the low light that starts some 30–45 minutes before sunset, so these times shape the day. Local clock time, for 2027 (they move by a minute or two from year to year); the Azores keep their clocks an hour behind the mainland. Every month is in sunset and golden hour in Portugal.

Lisbon & Sintra: city, palaces and Atlantic cliffs

Two weddings in one: the city — tiled façades, viewpoints over red roofs, the wide Tagus — and, a short way west, the green hills of Sintra and a coast of cliffs and surf beaches. Sintra’s hills, a UNESCO cultural landscape, are full of romantic-era palaces, gardens and old estates, and make their own weather: on a clear Lisbon day they can sit in soft cloud, beautiful for photographs and cool for guests.

Lisbon’s airport sits close to the city, which makes it the easiest region for guests flying in. Mid-June brings the city’s popular saints’ festivities to the old neighbourhoods — lively, and harder for getting around — and August is the busiest month on the coast. In Sintra’s parks a wedding photo session pays its own fee: €150 at the ticket office on the day, covering park entry for up to six people including the photographer, in the gardens only (Parques de Sintra, October 2026).

Suits: couples who want city portraits, a palace and the sea in one day, and guests who will arrive by plane. More on Lisbon & Sintra.

Porto & Douro: a river city and terraced vineyards

Porto is granite and river, with the port-wine lodges on the opposite bank in Gaia; upstream, the Douro valley’s terraced vineyards rise steeply from the water, and its wine estates — quintas — often host the ceremony, dinner and guests in one place. The harvest usually runs from September into early October, depending on the year, and in October the vines turn red and gold.

Fly into Porto; the valley is a drive inland on winding roads, or a scenic train along the river. The north is the wettest part of the mainland — Porto averages 149 mm of rain in October — while the valley in July and August is very hot, so ceremonies there work best late in the afternoon.

Suits: wine lovers, autumn weddings, and celebrations where guests stay at the estate for a few days. More on Porto & Douro.

Algarve: cliffs, beaches and the longest season

The driest and sunniest region, with golden cliffs, coves and long beaches along the south coast. Faro averages just 22 mm of rain in September, and March, April and November are often mild and bright, with fewer people. August is the peak of the holiday season, when rooms and dates are hardest to find.

Faro airport is in the middle of the coast, with flights from much of Europe, and a car makes the day much easier. A clifftop ceremony looks wonderful in any month; check the wind and where the sun will be at your hour.

Suits: couples who want sun and sea with the best odds of a dry day, from spring to late autumn. More on the Algarve.

Alentejo & Comporta: plains, estates and dunes

The Alentejo is wide plains, cork oaks, olive groves and white hill villages, with country estates — herdades and montes — made for long dinners outside. Spring is its gift: in April and May the fields are green and full of wildflowers. Late September and October are the other good window. In July and August it is the hottest of these regions — Évora averages 33.5 °C in August — so summer weddings move to the evening.

Comporta, on the coast south of Lisbon, is beaches, dunes, rice fields and pine woods: a summer place, at its best in June and September. In July the afternoon north wind can blow hard on the beach, August is the busiest month, and in winter some seasonal places close. Both are reached by car — from Lisbon across the Tagus, or by the car ferry from Setúbal to the Tróia peninsula for Comporta — and a car is all but essential once there.

Suits: small, unhurried weddings (Alentejo) and relaxed, barefoot ones by the sea (Comporta). More on the Alentejo and Comporta.

Madeira: mild all year

Gardens, sea cliffs and mountains on an island where winter feels close to spring: Funchal’s average high is around 20 °C in January. The south coast is usually sunnier and drier, the north greener and more often under cloud, and the mountains make weather of their own — on a grey day you drive to the other coast for the sun.

Fly into Funchal, directly from many European cities or via Lisbon. Strong winds sometimes delay flights, so arrive with a spare day before the wedding — and make sure your photographer does too.

Suits: winter weddings, and couples who want dramatic landscapes with gentle weather. More on Madeira.

Azores: green, changeable, one hour behind

Volcanic coast, crater lakes and green pastures in the middle of the Atlantic. In the Azores they talk of four seasons in a day: Ponta Delgada averages rain in every month, even 46 mm in August. June to September is the main season, with hydrangeas lining the roads in summer; from November to April expect rougher, wetter days. Every outdoor plan needs a covered fallback.

Fly to São Miguel (Ponta Delgada) or another island, directly or via Lisbon or Porto; small planes and ferries link the islands. The islands keep their clocks one hour behind the mainland, which matters for sunset and for calls with guests and suppliers.

Suits: elopements and small weddings for couples who love wild landscapes and don’t mind weather. More on the Azores.

Which region for which wedding?

  • Many guests flying in: Lisbon & Sintra, Porto or the Algarve — each next to its own international airport.
  • Wine and autumn colour: Porto & Douro, in September or October.
  • The best odds of a dry, sunny day: the Algarve, from May to October.
  • A small wedding with a long dinner outside: the Alentejo in spring or early autumn.
  • Barefoot by the sea: Comporta in June or September.
  • Winter: Madeira, then the Algarve; see a rain plan wherever you go.
  • An elopement in wild scenery: the Azores or Madeira — see how to plan an elopement.

Questions couples ask

Is Lisbon or Porto better for a wedding?

They suit different weddings. Lisbon & Sintra combine a capital, palaces and Atlantic cliffs, with an airport close to the city; Porto opens onto the Douro’s wine estates, best in September and October. Porto is wetter — 149 mm of rain on average in October against 111 mm in Lisbon (1991–2020 normals).

Where is the best place in Portugal for a beach wedding?

The Algarve has the longest dry season and the most dramatic cliffs and coves, with Faro’s airport in the middle of the coast. Comporta, south of Lisbon, has wide beaches and dunes and is best in June and September. Beach ceremonies may need local permission, and afternoon wind is common on the west coast in summer.

Where is it warmest to get married in Portugal in winter?

Madeira: Funchal’s average high is around 20 °C in January, and the south coast is usually sunnier and drier. The Algarve is the mildest choice on the mainland. Plan a covered option anywhere from November to March.

Which airport should guests use for a wedding in the Douro or the Alentejo?

For the Douro, Porto; the valley is then a drive inland or a train ride along the river. For the Alentejo, Lisbon, or Faro for its southern part, then a car. For Comporta, Lisbon, then by car across the Tagus or by ferry from Setúbal to Tróia.

When does it rain in Portugal?

Mostly from October to April. In the 1991–2020 normals, October averages 149 mm of rain in Porto, 111 mm in Lisbon and 56 mm in Faro, while July and August are nearly dry on the mainland. The Azores have rain in every month.

Is the Azores a good place for a wedding?

For couples who love wild, green landscapes and can be flexible, yes — especially for an elopement or a small wedding between June and September. The weather changes fast, so every outdoor plan needs a covered fallback, and the islands are one hour behind the mainland.
