Lisbon & Sintra
A capital of hills and river light, with Sintra’s misty palaces and the Atlantic cliffs just to the west.
Lisbon gives you two weddings in one: the city — tiled façades, viewpoints over red roofs, trams and the wide Tagus — and, just to the west, the green hills of Sintra and a coast of cliffs and surf beaches.
Sintra’s hills, a UNESCO cultural landscape, are full of romantic-era palaces, gardens and old estates. They make their own weather: on a clear Lisbon day the hills can sit in a soft cloud, which is beautiful for photographs and cool for guests.

Through the year
When to marry in Lisbon & Sintra
May, June, September and October are warm without the peak-summer heat and crowds. July and August work well by the sea and in Sintra’s shade; the old town is busy then.

- SpringGardens in Sintra are at their greenest and the city is fresh. Showers still pass through in April — keep a covered spot in mind.
- SummerLong days and late sunsets. Mid-June the city celebrates its popular saints, with music in the old neighbourhoods — lively, and harder for getting around. Sintra can be foggy while the city bakes.
- AutumnWarm days, a warm sea, softer light and fewer visitors: many couples’ favourite time here. Rain usually returns from November.
Places
Where couples marry here
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Palaces and gardens in the Sintra hills
Old estates with mossy stone, ferns and long avenues of trees — some open for ceremonies, many perfect for portraits.
The city itself
Viewpoints at golden hour, tiled streets, a civil ceremony followed by a walk through the old quarters before dinner.
Atlantic cliffs and surf beaches
West of Sintra the land ends at Cabo da Roca and wild beaches: elopements, vows in the wind, portraits at sunset.
Quintas and riverside rooftops
Country houses on the city’s edge for a long dinner under the trees, and terraces over the river for a party in town.
Light
How the light falls
The coast faces west, so the sun goes down straight into the Atlantic — the best portraits happen in the last hour on the cliffs. In the city the river catches the evening light; Sintra’s mist turns hard sun into soft, even light.
Travel
Getting there
Lisbon’s airport sits close to the city. Sintra and the coast are reached by car or by suburban train — plan the day around traffic on summer weekends.
