Portugal

Comporta

Rice fields, pine woods and endless dunes south of Lisbon — barefoot, unhurried and full of sea light.

South of Lisbon, beyond the Sado estuary, the coast turns into a long line of empty beaches backed by dunes, pine woods and rice paddies where storks nest on the poles.

Weddings here are relaxed by nature: reed-roofed houses, long tables outside, linen and bare feet. It suits small weddings and elopements as much as a big party in the pines.

Through the year

When to marry in Comporta

Late spring and September are calm and golden. July and August are the busy season — beautiful, but book places to stay early. Outside the warm months many beach places close.

  • Late springGreen rice fields, wild flowers in the dunes and a quiet coast. Evenings can be cool by the sea — have wraps for guests.
  • SummerHot days, a cold Atlantic and lots of visitors. On the beach the wind often picks up in the afternoon: hair, veils and candles need a plan.
  • SeptemberWarm sand, softer light and the rice turning gold before the harvest. Probably the loveliest month here.

Places

Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

  1. Beaches and dunes

Vows with the sea behind you, or a dinner on a wooden deck at the edge of the dunes.

  2. Houses in the pine woods

Private houses and small hotels in the trees: a long table, lights in the branches, dancing under the pines.

  3. Rice fields and the estuary

Flat green and gold land, wooden piers and herons — portraits that look like nowhere else in Portugal.

  4. Village squares and white chapels

Small whitewashed villages for a simple ceremony and a drink with everyone afterwards.

Light

How the light falls

The beaches face west, so the sun sets over the ocean, and the flat land gives a long, slow golden hour across the dunes and fields. Midday sun on white sand is harsh — the best photographs come early and late.

Travel

Getting there

From Lisbon by car across the Tagus, or by car ferry from Setúbal to the Tróia peninsula. A car is all but essential once you are here.
