Portugal

Algarve

Golden cliffs, sea caves and long beaches on Portugal’s sunny south coast — easy to reach, warm most of the year.

The Algarve is the south coast: golden limestone cliffs, coves and sea caves towards the west, long sandy beaches and the lagoons of the Ria Formosa towards the east, and a wild Atlantic coast around the corner.

It is one of the sunniest corners of Europe and one of the easiest to reach, which is why so many destination weddings happen here — on cliff tops, in country houses inland, and on beaches at dusk.

Through the year

When to marry in Algarve

Spring and autumn are warm and calmer. July and August are hot and crowded on the coast; inland, under the trees, still lovely. Winter is mild, with short days.

  • SpringOrange blossom inland, flowers on the cliff tops and warm afternoons. The sea is still cool.
  • SummerGuaranteed sun and full beaches. Choose the hour and the spot carefully: popular coves are busy until sunset.
  • AutumnThe sea is at its warmest, the light softens and the coast empties out. Ideal for a beach ceremony.

Places

Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

  1. Cliff tops over the sea

Ceremonies and portraits on golden rock, with sea stacks and turquoise water below.

  2. Beaches and coves

A barefoot ceremony at the end of the day, when the families have gone home.

  3. Country houses in the hills

Inland, among orange, carob and fig trees: quiet, shaded and away from the summer crowds.

  4. Old towns and fishing villages

Whitewashed lanes, churches and harbours — for the ceremony, or for portraits between the ceremony and dinner.

Light

How the light falls

The coast faces south, so the late light rakes along the cliffs and turns the rock orange; for the sun setting into the sea, head to the western end. The water reflects a lot of light — midday is bright and hard, evenings are glowing.

Travel

Getting there

Faro airport is in the middle of the coast, with flights from much of Europe; Lisbon is a drive away. A car makes the day much easier.
