A former fishing village in a cove of the Lagoa coast, with sandstone cliffs, sea caves and a boardwalk along the cliffs to Algar Seco.
Carvoeiro grew from a fishing hamlet — its old name, Caboiere, goes back to the Islamic-medieval period — into a seaside town still built around the beach at its centre. It belongs to Lagoa, five kilometres inland. East of the village the coast is carved into caves and stacks: Algar Seco, Vale Centeanes, the Seven Hanging Valleys, Benagil and Praia da Marinha.
A Carvoeiro wedding is usually a cliff-top one: vows facing the sea from a garden above the rock, portraits along the cliffs in the last light, and the party moving indoors when the outdoor music has to stop. Put the guests up in the village and they can walk down to the beach the morning after.
Photographers
They shoot everywhere in the Algarve — in Carvoeiro too. Their whole weddings are on their pages.

Ceremonies here happen in gardens and on belvederes above the sandstone cliffs. At Tivoli Carvoeiro, for example, the ceremony is on the Belvedere or in the Ocean Garden, for up to 140 guests, and the hotel hosts one wedding a day — ask any venue whether yours will be the only one.
A chapel of medieval origin with an eight-sided dome, on a cliff over the sea at Porches, in the same municipality. Couples marry there and hold the reception somewhere else; a church wedding goes through the parish and the Diocese of the Algarve.
Lagoa is also wine country. Quinta dos Vales in Estômbar, for one, hosts weddings among its vines and pairs them with a ceremony at the Senhora da Rocha chapel, about 20 minutes away by car.
Praia do Carvoeiro, in the centre of the village, is lovely for blue-hour portraits but, as a designated bathing beach, hard for a ceremony in season; anything set up on the sand needs the câmara’s and the maritime authority’s permission.

Portraits
A 570-metre boardwalk runs along the cliffs from the ruins of the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação fort to Algar Seco — rock, grottoes and openings onto the sea. Solar lamps at ground level light it after dark, so it works into blue hour.
The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, beside the ruins of a fort from 1670, with views over the sea and the town. Late afternoon here, then down the boardwalk as the light drops.
A 5.7 km cliff path between Praia da Marinha and Vale Centeanes. A few hundred metres from either end is enough for portraits over the coves at the start of golden hour; stay well back from the edges.
Through the year
The nearest IPMA normal is Praia da Rocha, in Portimão, a few kilometres west (1971–2000): average highs of 21.2 °C in May, 24.7 °C in June, 28.2 °C in August and 25.6 °C in September, with more than 25 days of 25 °C or above in each of July and August. June to August are nearly dry (0.3–1.1 rainy days a month); October, still 22.0 °C, brings the rain back (5.7 days). May, June, September and early October are the gentlest months for a cliff-top ceremony.

Practical
Faro airport is about 45 km from Lagoa, and Carvoeiro is 5 km south of Lagoa town; the nearest train station is in Portimão, about ten minutes’ drive from Lagoa. Most people arrive by car, so plan a shuttle for guests.
Praia do Carvoeiro, Vale Centeanes, Benagil and Marinha are designated bathing beaches. A ceremony with chairs, an arch or sound is a request to the Câmara Municipal de Lagoa and the Capitania do Porto de Portimão; avoid July and August if you can.
Aerial images need an ANAC-registered operator and the Autoridade Aeronáutica Nacional’s free e-AAN authorisation, and no drone may fly over a crowd — a busy boardwalk included.
A civil wedding goes through a Conservatória do Registo Civil, and by agreement the registrar can marry you at your venue. For a Catholic wedding, ask the parish first: the priest is not obliged to accept a couple from outside the parish.
Questions
Not on its beach. Since 2024 the Capitania do Porto de Portimão forbids landing inside the Algar de Benagil, swimming in, and navigating there between sunset and sunrise. Morning photos from a boat are possible; a sunset session inside is not.
Couples do: it is a medieval chapel on a cliff over the sea at Porches. A Catholic wedding there goes through the parish and the Diocese of the Algarve, and the priest decides whether to accept a couple from elsewhere.
June or September. Praia da Rocha, the nearest IPMA station, averages highs of 24.7 °C in June and 25.6 °C in September, with one or two rainy days a month (1971–2000). August is the hottest, at 28.2 °C, and the busiest.
It depends on the venue, and outdoor music often stops earlier than indoor. At Tivoli Carvoeiro it ends at 23:00 outside and at 02:00 in the indoor rooms set aside for it (2026 wedding kit). Ask yours before you plan the dancing.
