A village on the floor of a crater, two lakes joined under a bridge, a neo-Gothic church at the end of an avenue of trees, and a mist that can take the whole view in minutes.
Sete Cidades is a parish of 701 people (2021) inside a caldera about 6 km by 5 at the western end of São Miguel, with walls of 200 to 500 metres.
On its floor lies the Lagoa das Sete Cidades, 4.35 km² at 259 metres above the sea: the Lagoa Azul and the Lagoa Verde, joined by a narrow strait with a bridge across it. Legend makes them the tears of a princess and a shepherd who were not allowed to marry. The lake is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal; a discharge tunnel for the lake opened in 1937.
This is a wedding for couples who come for the place and accept its weather. The lake and its shores are protected, so plan the day in two parts: the ceremony on private ground in the village or at its church, and the portraits at the viewpoints on the rim, at either end of the light, whenever the cloud opens. Guests can sleep in Ponta Delgada, half an hour away, and the plan for a white-out is part of the plan.

Booking through Lens & Vows
Ceremonies
A wedding published in October 2026 held its vows at Casa dos Barcos, a boathouse on the lake, and its dinner under a tent in the garden of Casa Grande, a manor in the village, with the dancing in a renovated stable. Neither publishes terms, so ask whether they take other weddings. Private ground is the simple way to set out chairs, an arch and tables here.
The parish church, neo-Gothic and of the 19th century, white and dark stone at the end of an avenue of tall trees. Ask the parish whether it takes couples from outside. A Catholic wedding in a Portuguese parish is also your legal wedding.
The village has no wedding room of its own that we could find. A civil wedding at a place of your choosing, at a date and time agreed with the registrar, costs €200 (IRN, November 2026), or you sign at a registry in Ponta Delgada for €120 and make your vows here.
Two people and a photographer on a public viewpoint or a marked trail are the lightest possible ceremony. Keep to the paths: in the lake’s protected zone, leisure activities off trails and designated areas need the prior, binding opinion of the regional environment department (Decreto Regulamentar Regional 17/2020/A), and that is before chairs or an arch come into it.

Portraits
On the crater’s rim, south of the Lagoa Verde, named after the visit of King Carlos and Queen Amélia in 1901; you can drive and park at it. It looks across both lakes, the bridge and the village. The floor of the crater loses the sun before the rim does: on 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 21:07, with golden light from 20:28 to 21:26 (NOAA’s solar equations); on 15 September at 19:52.
Also called Boca do Inferno: a viewpoint in the Lagoa do Canário forest, reached by a railed path along a ridge, looking over the Lagoa Azul, the Lagoa de Santiago and the Lagoa Rasa. The path is narrow and exposed, so wear shoes for it and keep the long dress for the end.
The arched bridge of Regos crosses the strait where the Lagoa Azul meets the Lagoa Verde, with the crater walls standing all round. It carries the road, so stop beside it rather than on it. In a low mist this is where the photographs still work when the rim shows nothing.
The straight walk between tall dark trunks up to the church’s door gives shade and a clean line at midday, with the crater’s walls behind the tower. Parishioners use it too: be quick around Mass.
Through the year
The crater has no station of its own. IPMA’s nearest long record, Ponta Delgada on the coast at 35 m (1991–2020), averages highs of 22.4 °C in June, 24.7 °C in July, 26.0 °C in August and 25.0 °C in September, with rain on 6.6, 4.8, 6.5 and 9.4 days; the lake lies at 259 m and the rim well above it, so expect it cooler and more often in cloud. Hydrangeas bloom along these roads in early summer. Fog can hide both lakes completely, whatever the month: hold a second morning free.
Azores, month by month
Practical
From Ponta Delgada it is 25 km by road, about 28 minutes in a car or taxi (Rome2Rio). Bus line 205 takes about an hour and has only a few runs, so check the current timetable with Auto Viação Micaelense and plan rented cars or a minibus for guests.
The lake and shores are a partial-protection zone of 648.53 ha in São Miguel’s Natural Park; the zone named after the village, 330.23 ha, is a sustainable-use area. We found no rule that names weddings. Anything set up on public shore or rim, then, is a question for the regional environment department, well ahead, not on the day.
Over the lake’s protected zone, flights by drones at one-off events need the same department’s prior, binding opinion (DRR 17/2020/A, art. 9), on top of ANAC’s registration and the Autoridade Aeronáutica Nacional’s e-AAN authorisation. Allow weeks, and don’t count on a shot you haven’t got the paper for.
The big hotel by Vista do Rei is an abandoned ruin. It appears in many pictures of the area, but it isn’t a venue, so don’t build a plan on it.
Questions
On private ground, with its owner’s yes: a boathouse on the lake hosted a wedding published in 2026. On the public shore, nothing we could find forbids or allows a ceremony by name, but it lies in a protected zone: ask the regional environment department first.
Vows for two at the viewpoint are simple. A legal ceremony needs a registrar who agrees to come (€200, IRN, November 2026), and a viewpoint is public and has visitors on it. The simpler way is to sign elsewhere and come here for the photographs.
It happens, in any month. Keep a second morning free, have your photographer watch the sky, and take the first portraits on the crater floor, at the bridge and the church, where mist looks good instead of hiding everything.
At an event, only with the regional environment department’s prior opinion, as well as the national registration and authorisation. A photographer can tell you whether it is worth the paperwork; the view from the rim needs none of it.
By car or taxi from Ponta Delgada, 25 km and about half an hour. The bus takes an hour and has few runs, so a hired minibus is the easy answer for a group. The city has the most beds; the village has rental houses and a campsite.
Azores
AzoresThe whole region: when to marry, the kinds of places, the light, getting there.
Ponta DelgadaThe largest city in the Azores: white walls trimmed in black basalt, a botanical garden with a chapel of 1624, and an airport two kilometres from the old town.
Angra do HeroísmoA UNESCO city on a bay closed by an old volcano: straight Renaissance streets, painted chapels, and a cathedral rebuilt after the earthquake of 1980.Plan
