Angra do Heroísmo from the slopes of Monte Brasil: red roofs and white churches around the blue bay and the marina, with the green hills of Terceira behind

Wedding photographers in Angra do Heroísmo

A UNESCO city on a bay closed by an old volcano: straight Renaissance streets, painted chapels, and a cathedral rebuilt after the earthquake of 1980.

Angra, on the south coast of Terceira, grew rich as a port of call: ships of the India run and Spanish galleons from the Caribbean came in to resupply in the bay, between Monte Brasil and the city. It was made “Angra do Heroísmo” in 1837 for its part in the Civil War. On 1 January 1980 an earthquake badly damaged the old centre, which was repaired in about four years, and in December 1983 UNESCO listed it as World Heritage. The municipality has 33,771 people (2021), and it is home to the Diocese of Angra, which covers all the Azores.

A wedding here is compact and on foot. The straight streets run from the harbour up to the Sé; the walk from the church to the portraits is a few minutes, through a garden to an obelisk over the city, or by car to the viewpoints on Monte Brasil. Dinner is at a quinta a few minutes out or in a fort above the sea. Terceira is a flight away from São Miguel, so it suits a small wedding, and guests who are willing to come for the island.

Ceremonies

Where couples marry in Angra do Heroísmo

  1. The Sé

The Cathedral of the Holy Saviour, begun in 1568 and finished outside about 1618, is 66.75 metres long and 43 wide, reckoned the largest church in the archipelago. The 1980 earthquake and a fire in 1985, which took the gilded woodwork and the organs, mean that much of the inside is a careful rebuilding; a new pipe organ came in 1994. It is open to visitors Tuesday to Saturday. We found no published wedding rules: ask the parish of the Sé well ahead.

  2. The Misericórdia

The white-and-blue 18th-century church at the port entrance, on the site of the first hospital in the Azores, with tile panels inside and the marina at its feet, belongs to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia and opens to visitors on weekdays and Saturday mornings. Ask the Santa Casa whether it takes weddings.

  3. A quinta outside the city

Quinta da Nasce-Água, in Vinha Brava a few minutes from the centre, is an old estate run as a Turismo de Habitação: gardens with a lake, a pergola and old trees, a space for civil ceremonies, rooms for some guests, and a directory listing of 10 to 500 people. Quinta do Galo in Terra Chã lists a ballroom, a garden and a chapel, for 10 to 400. Visit before you decide.

  4. The fort of São Sebastião

The Pousada Forte Angra do Heroísmo is a modern hotel inside a 16th-century fortress on a cliff in the listed centre, with terraces over the sea and Monte Brasil. Listings name wedding services and a banquet room; ask it what it offers for a ceremony. A civil wedding away from the registry needs the registrar’s agreement, and costs €200 rather than €120 (IRN, November 2026).

Through the year

When to marry in Angra do Heroísmo

IPMA’s station above the city (Observatório José Agostinho, 90 m, 1991–2020) averages highs of 21.5 °C in June, 24.2 °C in July, 25.5 °C in August and 24.2 °C in September, with rain on 6.0, 4.8, 6.4 and 8.2 days; October has 21.6 °C and 12.8. It never reached 30 °C in those thirty years: the highest was 29.3 °C. The Sanjoaninas take over the city for ten days around St John’s, 19–28 June in 2026: marches, bullfights and music in the streets, wonderful or impossible depending on your plan. Check 2027’s dates when they are announced.

Practical

Good to know before the day

  • Getting there

Terceira’s Lajes airport, a civil terminal on a runway shared with the military base, is about 23 minutes by car from the centre, with EVT buses as the cheap way. TAP flies from Lisbon and Porto; from Ponta Delgada, SATA Air Açores takes 40 to 45 minutes. Other routes change by season: check them for your date.

  • Monte Brasil and the fortress

The old volcano is a recreational forest reserve run with the island’s forest service, with a road and a 7.5 km walking circuit. The Fortress of São João Baptista at its foot, still partly used by the army, opens by guided tour only, Wednesday to Sunday, booked ahead, €5. For anything more than a walk with a camera, ask the forest service and the fortress first.

  • Drones

Lajes shares its runway with a military base, so check the airspace first. You need ANAC’s registration and the Autoridade Aeronáutica Nacional’s e-AAN authorisation, and Monte Brasil and the listed centre are places to ask before you fly. Ask your photographer what is realistic.

  • The legal part

It is the same as anywhere in Portugal: ID, birth certificate and a certificate of capacity under six months old for a foreign partner, the file in at least a month before the date, and an interpreter if needed. A Catholic wedding is also your legal wedding. Our guide to getting married in Portugal has the steps.

Questions

Questions about marrying in Angra do Heroísmo

Can we marry in Angra’s cathedral?

We found no published rules, so ask the parish of the Sé directly, with as much time as you can. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Angra, reckoned the largest church in the Azores. Whichever parish it is, a Catholic wedding is also your legal one.

How much does a civil wedding cost in Angra?

The national registry fees: €120 at the Conservatória in its hours, €200 at another place or outside those hours, by agreement with the registrar (IRN, November 2026). Whether a quinta or the Pousada has a registrar willing to come is something to settle first.

How do we get guests from São Miguel to Terceira?

SATA Air Açores flies the hop in 40 to 45 minutes, on small planes that the weather can delay, so fly them in at least a day before. TAP also flies directly from Lisbon and Porto.

When is the best time to marry in Angra?

July and August are the driest, with 4.8 and 6.4 rainy days and highs of 24.2 °C and 25.5 °C at IPMA’s station; June is cooler and September a little wetter. Ten days around St John’s belong to the Sanjoaninas: lovely if you want the party, otherwise pick another week.

Do we need a plan for rain?

Yes, in any month: even in July there are about five rainy days. Churches and a quinta’s hall cover the ceremony and dinner. For portraits, watch for a gap: the garden and the Rua da Sé are minutes from a door, and the sky can change quickly.
