A small railway town where the Pinhão river meets the Douro, with terraced estates on the hillsides around it and the tiled station guests arrive at.
Pinhão sits deep inside the Alto Douro, the World Heritage wine region UNESCO listed in 2001, where the steep terraces cover some 24,600 hectares.
The Pinhão river, one of the Douro’s main tributaries, comes in here beneath an old iron road bridge, and the railway, in service here since 1880, still stops at a station with 24 tile panels from 1937 showing the harvest, the treading of the grapes and the rabelo boats that carried the wine down to Gaia.
A wedding here happens on a quinta, not in the village: the estates around Pinhão have their own hotels, terraces and old chapels, and the day runs from the morning at the house to dinner over the river. Pinhão is what connects them. It is where the guests’ train stops and the old station gives you a portrait no estate has, and above it the road climbs to the viewpoint at Casal de Loivos, 420 metres up, for the last of the sun.

Ceremonies
The date, time and place of a civil wedding are agreed with the registrar, who can marry you at the quinta: €200 for a wedding outside the registry or at a weekend, as of November 2026, and you provide the registrar’s transport or pay for it. Ask early, because the registrar’s availability decides the date, and ask the estate what it has done before.
At Covas do Douro, downriver from Pinhão, with a cellar of 1764, a manor house whose chapel dates from 1795, and a hotel of 11 rooms; the estate’s name comes from a chapel the rabelo boatmen’s devotion built at the water’s edge. Venue listings say it hosts weddings, though its own site publishes no wedding page: ask its events team what it offers, and whether the chapel can be used.
Between Pinhão and Ervedosa do Douro, on the south bank, on an estate of 400 hectares that climbs to 600 metres: a hotel of 29 rooms spread across seven restored farm buildings. Great Wine Capitals named it a setting for weddings in March 2025; its own pages publish no wedding terms, so ask for them directly.
Canon law places a wedding in the parish where one of you lives, and in Portugal a transfer elsewhere needs the bishop’s licence: start with your own parish priest, then the parish of the church you have in mind, such as the São Bartolomeu parish church at Casal de Loivos. A Catholic wedding is also your legal marriage, and the priest files the request with the civil registry.

Portraits
Alijó’s municipal guide calls it an emblematic viewpoint of the Douro: at 420 metres, vines and terraced olive groves all round, with the river and the town of Pinhão below. There is only a small parking area, so go in one or two cars. On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 21:05 on a flat horizon, with golden light from 20:23; the upper terraces hold it longest.
The panels, paid for by the Port Wine Institute and painted from Casa Alvão’s photographs, are at a station still in use: four inter-regional trains a day in each direction since November 2026, and the times in CP’s timetable tell you when the platform will be quiet.
The old road bridge over the Douro, with the terraced hills behind it, is the classic view of Pinhão. On a still morning the hills are mirrored in the water.
UNESCO’s description tells you what you are looking at: the narrow, irregular socalcos held up by schist walls are older than the 1860s and carry one or two rows of vines, the long regular terraces come from the replanting after phylloxera. Walk them with the estate’s permission, in closed shoes: these are working vineyards, and the walls are old schist.
Through the year
Pinhão has no climate sheet of its own. At Régua, about 20 km west and also in the valley (IPMA, 56 m, normals 1981–2010), average highs are 24.2 °C in May, 28.7 °C in June, 32.1 °C in August, 29.1 °C in September and 23.0 °C in October; there are about 22 days of 30 °C or more in August, and rain on two days in August against five in September and ten in October. Pinhão itself set mainland Portugal’s July record, 47.0 °C on 14 July 2022 (IPMA). May, June, late September and October are the months to look at. The harvest usually runs from September into early October (in 2026 it came about a week early), when the estates are busy. On 15 September 2027 the sun sets at 19:40, on a flat horizon.

Practical
In CP’s timetable from 3 November 2026, the leg between Marco de Canaveses and Régua is a replacement bus, and Régua to Pinhão is a 27-minute train, four a day. From Porto Campanhã that makes between about 2¾ hours (the 17:30, arriving 20:12) and 4 hours. The last train back to Régua leaves Pinhão at 17:15, so guests stay the night. Check the timetable for your date.
Quinta Nova’s own words are fair: “the roads in the Douro are challenging, but the landscapes are breathtaking”. Plan shuttles for guests and keep them off the hill roads after dinner. Rooms are few (Quinta Nova has 11, Ventozelo 29), so count beds before you choose an estate; Quinta Nova collects its hotel guests free at Ferrão’s pier and station at check-in and check-out.
From June to September, plan backwards from the sun: a ceremony in the last two hours of light, in the shade of the house or under the trees, water for the guests, dinner when the terrace has cooled. Nights in the valley average about 17 °C in July and August at Régua, so most of the heat goes after dark.
A drone needs ANAC registration and the Autoridade Aeronáutica Nacional’s e-AAN authorisation, and in the open category it may not fly over a gathering of people. Check any restrictions before the day, and ask the estate first.
Start the file at any Conservatória do Registo Civil or online at least a month ahead; you then have six months to marry. A foreign partner brings a certificate of capacity to marry issued within the last six months and a birth certificate, translated into Portuguese unless in English, French or Spanish. Our guide to getting married in Portugal has the steps.
Questions
Yes: the registrar can marry you away from the registry, by agreement on date, time and place. It costs €200 instead of €120 (November 2026), and you provide the transport or pay the registrar’s travel. Agree it with the registrar before you confirm the estate.
Very. The nearest normals, at Régua, give average highs of 31.7 °C in July and 32.1 °C in August with over 20 days of 30 °C or more in each, and Pinhão itself recorded 47.0 °C on 14 July 2022. A summer wedding here means a ceremony at the end of the day and dinner after dark.
It is the valley at its busiest, but the estate’s people and cellars are working, and the dates move: in 2026 the harvest came about a week early. Ask the estate how close the picking will come to your day, and what happens at the cellar during your dinner.
Not by train after a wedding: the last train from Pinhão to Régua leaves at 17:15 (CP, from 3 November 2026). Most couples put guests up at the estate or nearby, or hire a coach both ways.
The viewpoint at Casal de Loivos for the last light, the tiled station for something only Pinhão has, the iron bridge in the early morning, and your own estate’s terraces. In June the sun sets just after nine on a flat horizon; the hills take it from the river sooner.
