France

Wedding photographers in France

Paris, châteaux along the Loire, lavender in Provence, the Riviera’s light, vineyards from Bordeaux to Champagne, the wild coasts of Normandy and Brittany, and the Alps.

France runs from the Channel to the Mediterranean and from the Atlantic to the Alps, and its season moves with the map: Paris, the Loire and the north are best from late spring to early autumn, Provence and the Riviera from May to October, and the Alps have a summer and a winter of their own.

In France only the civil wedding at the town hall — the mairie — is legally binding, so many couples hold the celebration separately: a symbolic or religious ceremony at a château, a wine estate or a country house.

The seasons

What each season brings

The legal basics

Three ways to say yes

What makes a wedding legally binding in France, in short — and why most couples from abroad sign the papers at home.

  • CivilThe only legal wedding. The mayor or a deputy marries you at the town hall (the mairie) or another council building, never at a private venue, in a town where one of you, or a parent, lives or has lived for at least a month when the banns go up. So a couple living abroad, with no parent in France, can’t, in practice, marry legally here. Same-sex couples can marry.
  • ReligiousA religious ceremony has no legal effect in France and may only follow the civil wedding: the minister asks for proof that you are already married, and couples from abroad usually bring their certificate. Each faith has its own steps.
  • SymbolicAny place, any words, any celebrant — but no legal weight. Most couples from abroad marry in France this way: the papers at home, the celebration here.

Before any legal wedding

You hand in a file at the mairie, which posts the banns for ten days; you can marry from the tenth day after, within a year. The registrar usually interviews you together, and sometimes separately. A foreign partner typically brings a passport, a birth certificate under six months old, a certificat de coutume from their embassy or consulate (their country’s marriage rules and proof they are free to marry), proof of address and two to four witnesses’ details. Papers from abroad need an apostille or legalisation where required, and a sworn translation.

Rules and documents change and depend on your nationality and residence: always check with the mairie, and with your own country’s embassy or consulate in France, before you set a date.
