The Falaise d’Aval at Étretat from the air at sunset, its white chalk wall, the arch and the Aiguille standing in the sea, a pebble beach below

Wedding photographers in Étretat

White chalk cliffs over 90 metres high, three natural arches and a pebble beach facing the sunset in June — the Normandy coast’s most painted view.

Étretat was a village of fishermen before it became a fashionable resort in the 19th century, when Courbet, Boudin and Monet painted its cliffs, Offenbach and Maupassant threw parties here and Maurice Leblanc hid Arsène Lupin in the Aiguille. The bay is framed by two cliffs: the Falaise d’Amont, to the right as you face the sea, with its low arch, and the higher Falaise d’Aval, over 80 metres, with its arch and the needle of rock, the Aiguille, beyond which a third arch, the Manneporte, opens.

Few couples from abroad can marry legally here, so most weddings in Étretat are symbolic: vows on private land, portraits on the cliff paths at either end of the day, dinner as the light goes over the sea. The cliffs are a protected site, part of a Grand Site project with twelve neighbouring communes, and the town is crowded in summer — plan the day around the tides, the weather and the quiet hours.

Ceremonies

Where couples marry in Étretat

  1. The mairie

A civil wedding in Étretat needs one of you, or a parent, to live in the commune, with at least a month’s continuous residence when the banns go up for their ten days. The town publishes no page of its own about weddings: ask the mairie, on Place Maurice Guillard, for its days and rooms.

  2. A religious ceremony

In France a church wedding may only follow the civil one, so the Catholic parish or Étretat’s small Protestant temple — where André Gide married in 1895 — comes after your legal wedding, at home or in France. Ask the parish or the temple well ahead.

  3. A symbolic ceremony on private land

Most couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold the ceremony here, in the garden of a hotel or a rented house. A ceremony set up on the beach or the cliff paths is another matter: they are public, protected and busy, so ask the mairie before planning chairs or an arch there.

Through the year

When to marry in Étretat

Météo-France’s nearest station, Octeville, 18 km away near Le Havre (1991–2020 normals), averages highs of 19.5 °C in June, 21.2 °C in July and 19.2 °C in September, with rain on 8 to 10 days a month all summer and only about five days at 25 °C or more in July: bring layers and a wet-weather plan. The beach faces north-west, so in June the sun sets over the sea: 22:09 on 15 June 2027, with golden light from 21:17 to 22:35 (NOAA’s solar equations); 20:13 on 15 September. The cliffs draw nearly a million visitors a year; in summer the gendarmerie posts a mounted patrol.

Good to know before the day

  • Getting there without a car

From April to early November, SNCF sells combined tickets from Paris: train to Le Havre or Bréauté-Beuzeville, then a coach to Étretat. Out of season, take the train to Fécamp and the NOMAD 509 coach, or to Le Havre and Lia bus 13 or 21.

  • Parking and coaches

Parking is paid all year, weekends and holidays included, from 9:00 to 19:00. In the centre a stay is capped at five hours; the outer car parks (Fréfossé, Grand Val, route de Criquetot, the station) cost €15 a day in 2025. A guests’ coach must park at the Grand Val: €200 for the day.

  • Photo shoots and drones

The town’s filming rules, which name photo shoots too, ask for a declaration at least ten working days ahead and allow no shoots at weekends, on public holidays or from 15 June to 15 September; ask the mairie whether your session counts. French drone rules ban flights at night and over public space in a built-up area, and the cliffs are protected: check the official restriction map first.

  • Storms

On a storm warning, a municipal order closes the sea-wall promenade and the beach and bans swimming. Keep a sheltered place for the portraits, and a second date in mind for the cliff session.

Questions

Questions about marrying in Étretat

Can we get legally married in Étretat?

Only if one of you, or a parent, lives in Étretat, with a month’s continuous residence by the time the banns are published. Most couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here.

Do we need permission for wedding photos on the cliffs?

Étretat’s filming rules cover photo shoots, need a declaration ten working days ahead and allow none at weekends, on holidays or between 15 June and 15 September. Whether a couple’s session counts is for the mairie to say: email it before you plan.

When is the best light in Étretat?

Late evening in summer: the beach faces north-west, and on 15 June 2027 the sun sets over the sea at 22:09, with golden light until about 22:35. Early morning is the quiet time on the cliff paths.

Is Étretat crowded?

Yes: the cliffs of the Côte d’Albâtre draw nearly a million visitors a year, and the narrow streets fill at summer weekends. Plan portraits for the early morning or late evening, and park outside the centre.

How do guests get to Étretat from Paris?

From April to early November, with SNCF’s combined train-and-coach tickets via Le Havre or Bréauté-Beuzeville; out of season by train to Fécamp or Le Havre and a local bus. Some long-distance coaches run direct from Paris.
