Lavender fields, stone villages on the hilltops and old country houses under the plane trees, from Avignon down to the sea.
Provence, between the Rhône and the Alps, is a country of limestone hills, vineyards and olive groves: the Luberon’s hill villages and lavender, the white ridges of the Alpilles, Roman Arles, Avignon of the popes, Aix-en-Provence below the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, and the Camargue’s marshes where the Rhône meets the sea.
Weddings gather around a bastide or a mas — a country manor or a stone farmhouse — with a ceremony under the plane trees and a long dinner outside on a warm night.

Through the year
May, June and September are warm and bright, with cooler evenings. July and August are hot, above all inland, so ceremonies move to the end of the day. Autumn rain comes from September in short, heavy storms, and the mistral, the cold north wind, can blow for days — most often in winter and spring.

Places
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Country manors and stone farmhouses with shaded terraces, pools and lavender — the ceremony, the dinner and the rooms in one place.
Rosé estates around Aix and in the Var, and the Rhône vineyards near Avignon: a ceremony among the vines, dinner in the courtyard.
Stone villages perched on the Luberon’s hills: a ceremony in a small square or a chapel, then portraits in steep lanes.
The white cliffs and clear water of the calanques near Marseille, and the Camargue’s marshes and beaches for wilder portraits.
Towns
Each with a page of its own: where couples marry there, where to take portraits, the practical side.
Light
This is the light Van Gogh came to Arles for: clear and hard at midday, warm on pale stone and ochre earth in the evening. After the mistral the sky is swept clean and the hills stand out sharp. At midsummer the sun sets around half past nine; the hour before it is the one for portraits.
Travel
Fly into Marseille, or Nice for the east of the region; fast trains from Paris reach Avignon, Aix-en-Provence and Marseille in about three hours. The villages and bastides are out in the country, so plan cars or a coach for the guests.
