The Château de Chenonceau on its arches across the river Cher

Wedding photographers in the Loire Valley

Renaissance châteaux on a wide, slow river, white stone, vineyards and cellars cut into the rock — an hour from Paris by fast train.

The Loire is France’s longest river, and along its middle reaches the kings and courtiers of the Renaissance built their castles. The valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes is a UNESCO World Heritage site: châteaux, gardens and towns of white tuffeau stone — Blois, Amboise, Tours, Saumur — with vineyards on the slopes and caves cut into the rock.

Most weddings here gather around a château or a manor: a ceremony in the park or the chapel, an orangery or a stone barn for dinner, and the guests in the rooms upstairs or in the town nearby.

Through the year

When to marry in the Loire Valley

June to September is the season: warm days, rarely too hot, and the fewest rainy days in July and August. May is fresh and green but showery; October is mild, with mist on the river and more rain. In late June the sun sets just before ten.

  • SpringGardens in flower and the river high and fast; cool mornings and showers, so keep a covered plan.
  • SummerLong, warm days, and sandbanks showing in the river as the water drops. On summer mornings, hot-air balloons drift over the châteaux.
  • Harvest and autumnThe grape harvest in September and early October, the great trees of the parks turning russet, and mist along the water in the morning.

Places

Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

  1. Châteaux and their parks

Renaissance and classical castles with formal gardens, chapels and orangeries — the ceremony, the dinner and the rooms in one place.

  2. Manors and country houses

Smaller manoirs and old farms of white stone, with a walled garden and a barn for dinner and dancing.

  3. Wine estates and cellars

Vineyards around Vouvray, Chinon and Saumur, with cellars cut into the soft tuffeau — cool even in summer, for a tasting before dinner.

  4. The river itself

Sandbanks, banks lined with poplars and old stone bridges for portraits, and flat-bottomed wooden boats out on the water.

Light

How the light falls

A wide, flat valley under big skies: the light is soft, the river doubles the sunset and the white tuffeau turns warm and golden in the evening. Mornings in late summer and autumn often start with mist on the water, lifting by mid-morning. Summer days are long, and the golden hour comes late — often in the middle of dinner.

Travel

Getting there

Fast trains from Paris reach Tours in about an hour, and the Paris airports are two to three hours away by road; Nantes is closer for Angers and Saumur. Between the châteaux, a car or a coach is all but essential.
