Wedding photographers in Occitanie & Languedoc

Wine estates among the vines, Roman stone around Nîmes, the walls of Carcassonne and a long Mediterranean shore, from the Rhône to the Pyrenees.

Occitanie runs from the Rhône to the Pyrenees and west to Toulouse. Along the sea lie the Languedoc, one of France’s great wine regions, and the Roussillon: the garrigue — scrubby hills of wild thyme — around Nîmes and Uzès, Montpellier, Béziers and Narbonne among the vines, the Canal du Midi, Carcassonne’s walled Cité and Collioure, where the Pyrenees meet the sea. The Pont du Gard, the Canal du Midi, the Cité and the episcopal city of Albi are listed by UNESCO.

Weddings here gather on wine estates — a château or a domaine among the vines — or at an old stone mas in the garrigue, with the ceremony outside and dinner under the trees.

Through the year

When to marry in Occitanie & Languedoc

May, June and September are warm and bright. July and August are hot, more so inland around Nîmes than on the breezy coast, so ceremonies move to the evening; July is the driest month. The year’s heaviest rain comes from September to November in short, violent storms, the épisodes cévenols, and the tramontane, a cold north-west wind, can blow for days, mostly in winter.

  • SpringThe vines come into leaf, poppies edge the fields in May and the garrigue smells of thyme; mild days, cool evenings.
  • SummerHot, dry days, cicadas in the pines and warm evenings outside until late. The beaches and the old towns fill up in July and August.
  • Harvest and autumnThe harvest from late August into September, when the estates are at their busiest; then the vines turn red and gold and the light softens.

Places

Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

  1. Wine châteaux and domaines

Estates with a manor house, a courtyard and vines to the horizon — around Pézenas, in the Minervois and the Corbières: the ceremony among the vines, dinner under the plane trees.

  2. Mas in the garrigue

Old stone farmhouses around Uzès and the Pont du Gard, with olive trees, a pool and rooms for everyone — a weekend in one place.

  3. Carcassonne and the old towns

Carcassonne’s ramparts, Cathar castles high on their rocks and the stone lanes of Uzès and Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, for portraits before or after the day.

  4. The Mediterranean coast

Sandy beaches from Aigues-Mortes to Narbonne, the canals of Sète and Collioure’s little bay below the Pyrenees, for a ceremony or portraits by the water.

Light

How the light falls

This is Mediterranean light — hard and white at midday, honey-coloured on old stone and vines in the evening — and Montpellier is one of the sunniest cities in France. After the tramontane the sky is swept clean and the hills stand out sharp. At midsummer the sun sets around half past nine; the hour before it belongs to portraits among the vines.

Travel

Getting there

Fly into Montpellier or Toulouse, or the smaller airports of Nîmes, Béziers, Carcassonne and Perpignan; fast trains from Paris reach Nîmes in about three hours. The estates are out in the country, so plan cars or a coach for the guests.
