Mont Blanc’s glaciers, clear alpine lakes and wooden chalets — summer meadows for elopements, and snow weddings in winter.
The French Alps rise east of Lyon to the borders with Switzerland and Italy, and to Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps, above the Chamonix valley. Below the peaks lie the great lakes — Annecy, with its old town of canals, Lake Bourget and the southern shore of Lake Geneva — and valleys of larch, pasture and wooden chalets.
Summer is for elopements and small weddings — vows on a meadow or by a lake, dinner in a chalet or a lakeside hotel — and winter for snow weddings, with portraits outside and dinner by the fire.

Through the year
Late June to September is the season: lifts and mountain huts open, meadows green, warm days in the valleys and cool ones up high. Summer brings afternoon storms, so mornings are the safest. The ski season runs from December to April; in between, in May and late autumn, many lifts and resort hotels close.

Places
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Lawns and hotel terraces on Lake Annecy and Lake Geneva, with the mountains reflected in the water and boats for portraits.
Wooden chalets in the resorts and old farmhouses in the valleys, with rooms for the guests, a long table and a fire.
Pastures and ridges reached by lift or on foot, with glaciers and the Mont Blanc massif on the horizon.
Baroque churches and small chapels in the villages and the pastures, for a quiet ceremony among old wooden houses.
Towns
Each with a page of its own: where couples marry there, where to take portraits, the practical side.
AnnecyCanals, an island prison and a clear mountain lake — a day that can move from the wedding room to a boat, then up to a pass for the sunset.
ChamonixGlaciers that reach down to the forest and Mont Blanc above the rooftops — a valley where the lift timetable and the afternoon storms plan the day with you.Light
Snow and high peaks catch the first and last sun and glow pink while the valleys are already in shade; mountain light is hard at midday, and the weather turns fast. Photographers here plan around sunrise and the last hour, keep a second spot in mind, and on the lakes take a boat to follow the light.
Travel
Fly into Geneva — Annecy is under an hour away by car, Chamonix about an hour and a quarter — or into Lyon. Fast trains from Paris reach Annecy in under four hours. In winter, mountain roads need snow tyres or chains, and the high passes close.
