Wedding photographers in France

Glaciers that reach down to the forest and Mont Blanc above the rooftops — a valley where the lift timetable and the afternoon storms plan the day with you.
Chamonix lies in a narrow valley between two ranges: the Mont Blanc massif, whose glaciers come down towards the forest, and the Aiguilles Rouges, a nature reserve since 1974, on the other side. From the station in town, at 1,035 m, two cable cars climb to the Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 m, and a rack railway runs to the Montenvers, at 1,913 m above the Mer de Glace.
A wedding here is planned around the mountain. The civil ceremony takes place at the town hall on the Place de l’Église, by the church of Saint-Michel; portraits go up to a lake or a balcony path in the morning, before the summer storms build; dinner is in a chalet or a hotel in the valley, or at the old refuge of the Montenvers. In the evening the valley floor falls into shade while the snow on the peaks keeps the last light.

Ceremonies
Civil weddings are held at the mairie, 38 Place de l’Église, from Monday to Saturday except public holidays. The file goes in by appointment, no earlier than a year and no later than two months before the date, and both of you must be there in person; the date and hour are fixed at that appointment.
The parish of Saint-Bernard du Mont-Blanc marries couples only in its five churches — Saint-Michel in Chamonix, whose bell tower bears the date 1119, the baroque Saint-Pierre in Argentière (1726), and those of Les Houches, Servoz and Vallorcine — never in the chapels. You must live in one of its communes or own a second home there, and ask at least a year ahead.
At 1,913 m at the foot of the Mer de Glace, reached in 20 minutes by the rack railway, the old refuge hosts wedding receptions and whole wedding weekends, and can be booked privately.
For dinner and the guests’ rooms, the valley’s hotels and chalets — the Hôtel Mont-Blanc, for one, has its own wedding offer. The Compagnie du Mont-Blanc, which runs the lifts, publishes no events offer: for a group at one of its sites, its sales team takes requests.

Portraits
At 2,352 m, with the whole Mont Blanc range across the valley and in the water. From the top of La Flégère it is 1 h 45 on foot one way — about three hours there and back, rated difficult — and the path is open from July, once the snow has gone. It lies in the nature reserve: no dogs, no flower picking, and no swimming in the lake.
Terraces at 3,842 m facing Mont Blanc, 20 to 40 minutes up by two cable cars. In July and August 2026 the first car left at 06:10 and the last ascent was at 16:30; booking is free but compulsory. Bring warm clothes even in summer; the glass Step into the Void closes in strong wind or hard frost.
The cable car’s halfway station, at 2,310 m, opens onto meadows and boulders under the granite needles. From there the Grand Balcon Nord path runs above the valley to the Montenvers in two and a half to three hours, mostly downhill — a walking session with the glaciers always in view.
The view over the glacier from the rack railway’s terminus, and a gondola, opened in February 2024, down towards the ice. The ice cave, at 1,760 m, takes about 170 steps and opens in summer only; the old footpath down to the glacier has been closed for good since November 2024.
About 2 km from the centre, by the climbing rocks at 1,015 m, with a fine view of the Mont Blanc massif and the Bossons glacier. No lift and no hike — a bus stop and a train halt nearby — so the whole wedding party can come, whatever the weather does higher up.
Through the year
Météo-France’s 1991–2020 normals for Les Houches, at 1,004 m just down the valley, give average highs of 21.8 °C in June, 23.9 °C in July, 23.4 °C in August and 18.8 °C in September. May to August are the wettest months, with 121 to 126 mm on 11 to 13 days each — the summer storms — while September is drier, 96.9 mm on about 9 days. High paths are not safe before the end of June. In summer 2026 La Flégère ran from 20 June to 13 September and the Montenvers from 30 May to 1 November; the Aiguille du Midi closes for maintenance from early November to mid-December. UTMB, the trail race, fills the valley in the last week of August.

Practical
Geneva airport is 88 km away, about 1 h 15 by car; trains from Geneva take about 2 h 40, and the Mont-Blanc Express runs up the valley from Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet. The guest card your lodging gives you makes that train free between Servoz and Vallorcine; buses are only discounted. The town suggests the Centre-Ville park-and-ride, with a shuttle.
The Aiguille du Midi is not advised for anyone with a heart problem or a bad cold, and children under three are not allowed up. The valley’s mountain-safety association warns of summer storms and advises setting off early. Keep a plan in the valley — the Gaillands or the church square — for days when the lifts stop.
In the Aiguilles Rouges reserve, gatherings need permission, and artistic or commercial displays are banned. Higher up, the Mont-Blanc protected site (2020) bans events of any kind, any structure, even a temporary one, and landing there by any means — no helicopter elopement on the summit snows.
Drones are banned at the Aiguille du Midi, flying over the nature reserves is forbidden, and the rescue helicopters’ zone around the Montenvers is closed to them all year. The town hall cannot authorise a flight: requests go to the préfecture.
A civil wedding needs one of you, or a parent, to live in Chamonix, with at least a month’s continuous residence when the banns go up for their 10 days; a church wedding comes only after it. Most couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in the valley.
Questions
Not legally — civil weddings take place at the town hall. The Compagnie du Mont-Blanc publishes no wedding offer, so a symbolic moment up there is a request for its sales team. For portraits, go up early with warm clothes and no drone, which is banned there.
The lake is in the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve, where gatherings need permission and artistic displays are banned, so ask the reserve before planning anything more than the two of you and your photographer. The hike from La Flégère takes 1 h 45 each way, and the path opens in July.
Not in this parish: Saint-Bernard du Mont-Blanc celebrates weddings only in its five churches, never in the chapels, and only for couples who live in its communes or own a second home there. Ask at least a year ahead.
Summer is the wettest season: 121 to 126 mm a month from May to August, on 11 to 13 days (Météo-France, Les Houches). Most of it comes as storms, so plan the high portraits for the morning and keep a valley spot in reserve; September is drier and quieter.
