In short
- Around Lisbon you can marry in a royal palace rented out by Parques de Sintra (Monserrate, Queluz), a palace hotel (Tivoli Palácio de Seteais, Pestana Palace, Olissippo Lapa Palace, Palácio Estoril), a quinta (Quinta de Sant’Ana, Quinta do Torneiro, Hotel Casa Palmela), a monastery resort (Penha Longa), a 16th-century convent (Convento do Beato) or a fort on the Atlantic (Fortaleza do Guincho, Pestana Cidadela Cascais).
- Capacities on the venues’ own sites range from about 120 guests with exclusive use of Tivoli Palácio de Seteais to a cloister seating 1,000 at Convento do Beato (as of October 2026).
- Monserrate, Queluz and Convento do Beato have no bedrooms; Penha Longa (204 rooms), Pestana Palace (190), Seteais (30) and Fortaleza do Guincho (27) can house much of the wedding party on site.
- Renting a palace space is not the same as a photo session in a Sintra park during visiting hours: the latter pays Parques de Sintra a €150 image fee for six people, with no tripods, flash, reflectors or drones (October 2026).
- The Cascais–Guincho coast faces west, so the sun sets into the Atlantic; the Sintra hills often sit in cloud on a clear Lisbon day, which softens the light for portraits.
In this guide
This is a shortlist of real places, grouped by kind. Every venue below says on its own website (or the official site of the body that runs it) that it hosts weddings, and every capacity is the venue’s own figure, rounded and checked in October 2026. Capacity depends on the layout — a seated dinner holds fewer people than a standing reception — so treat the numbers as a first filter. Each venue’s own page is linked in the sources at the end. We give no prices: availability, current rules and costs change, so check directly with the venue before you plan around anything here.
If you are still deciding between kinds of place — quinta or palace, city or coast — choosing a venue style compares them. For the region itself, its seasons and its light, see Lisbon & Sintra.
Where around Lisbon? Five areas
- Lisbon itself: palace hotels in Lapa and Alcântara, a convent in the east of the city, a river terrace in Belém. Easiest for guests flying in.
- The Sintra hills: palaces, gardens and a monastery inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and the UNESCO cultural landscape. Cooler, greener, often misty.
- Cascais, Estoril and Guincho: sea-front hotels, a citadel and a fort on the Atlantic. Sunset over the ocean.
- North-west, towards Mafra and the Silver Coast: wine country and dunes — Quinta de Sant’Ana in Gradil, Areias do Seixo near Torres Vedras.
- South, towards Arrábida: across the Tagus, Hotel Casa Palmela inside the Arrábida Natural Park.
Sintra’s palaces
Tivoli Palácio de Seteais — Sintra
An 18th-century palace hotel at the edge of Sintra, with frescoed halls, tapestries and antiques, a triumphal arch framing the Serra de Sintra, and gardens of lemon trees and camellias. The hotel’s wedding brochure offers exclusive use of the whole palace for up to 120 guests, including all 30 rooms. Ceremony in a salon or in the gardens; dinner in the restaurant or outdoors.
For photos: the arch is the classic frame, and the frescoed rooms are a ready indoor plan B. Ask whether exclusive use is available on your date.
Palácio de Monserrate — Sintra
The romantic palace built for the English industrialist Francis Cook to designs by James Knowles Jr., set in gardens with plants “from the four corners of the world”, on the road from Sintra to Colares. Parques de Sintra rents its spaces for weddings: the palace courtyard (about 80), the Music Room (about 60 seated), the Hall of Columns (about 80 seated, 100 standing) and the ruined chapel (about 25–30). No rooms on site.
For photos: the suggested flow is portraits at the chapel ruin, ceremony in the courtyard, dinner in the Music Room — which also works as the rain plan.
Palácio Nacional de Queluz — Queluz
The baroque royal palace between Lisbon and Sintra: a gilded Throne Room with mirrors and chandeliers, the Robillion staircase looking over formal gardens, a canal lined with tiles and a shell cascade. Parques de Sintra rents the Robillion staircase, terraces and gardens (about 280 seated), the Throne Room (about 200 seated) and smaller halls. No rooms on site.
For photos: the tile canal and the staircase are the set pieces; the Throne Room is a spectacular — and dark — plan B, so ask about lighting.
Palace hotels in Lisbon and Estoril
Pestana Palace — Lisbon
The Palácio de Valle Flôr, built in 1890 for the Marquis of Valle-Flôr and opened as a hotel in 2001, with French-style gardens classified as a National Monument. The old stables look over the gardens, the city and the Tagus. Pestana lists 32 event spaces for up to 500 guests and 190 rooms.
For photos: gardens and palace rooms lit by natural light; the river view from the old stables at sunset.
Olissippo Lapa Palace — Lisbon
A palace in Lapa with a tropical garden, palatial interiors and a room with a ceiling fresco by Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro. The hotel lists 8 event rooms for up to 250 people; the Lapa terrace takes about 160 for a cocktail and the garden about 125. 95 rooms.
For photos: palms and a garden in the middle of the city — a rare combination in Lisbon.
Palácio Estoril — Estoril
A grand hotel that says it has been hosting weddings since 1930, with views over the golf courses and the Atlantic. Its ballrooms seat about 400 (Atlantic Room), 100 (Europe Room) and 60 (Imperial Room, which opens onto a terrace).
For photos: marble and chandeliers inside, terraces and Atlantic views outside.
Quintas and manor houses
Quinta de Sant’Ana — Gradil, Mafra
A family wine estate between Lisbon and the Atlantic, with a baroque chapel and bell tower, ochre walls, stone staircases and rolling vineyards, plus an indoor dining hall. Six houses sleep 43 guests on the estate; the site gives no guest maximum for weddings.
For photos: chapel, vineyard rows and warm walls; the dining hall is the indoor fallback. Popular — ask early.
Quinta do Torneiro — Porto Salvo, Oeiras
An 18th-century manor between Lisbon and Cascais: connected salons with high ceilings and tile panels, an 18th-century chapel, a courtyard and a French garden. Events from 20 to 250 guests; the covered terrace seats about 250, the noble hall about 80. Six rooms sleep 16.
For photos: the covered terrace has sunset views and keeps the dinner dry if it rains.
Hotel Casa Palmela — Setúbal
A manor whose history goes back to the 17th century, on the Quinta do Esteval inside the Arrábida Natural Park, with gardens facing the Serra da Arrábida and the estate’s vineyards. The gardens take about 300 for a cocktail; the Marquês de Monfalim room seats about 90 indoors. Rooms on site.
For photos: mountain and vineyard backdrops, and Arrábida’s coast within reach for portraits — see where to elope in Portugal.
A monastery, a convent and two forts
Penha Longa Resort — Linhó, Sintra
A resort, now run by The Ritz-Carlton, that describes itself as the only hotel inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, built around a 14th-century monastery with a 16th-century chapel, old gardens and a golf course. The former stables (Sala dos Arcos) and a ballroom are indoor options; the largest space takes about 500 for a banquet. 204 rooms.
For photos: chapel, cloister-like gardens and the Sintra hills behind — with the hills’ mist on some days.
Convento do Beato — Lisbon
A 16th-century convent in the east of Lisbon, classified as heritage of public interest, hosting events since 1989. Its arched cloister seats about 1,000; nine rooms include a library and a terrace. No bedrooms.
For photos: the cloister arches and the stone; it is a large venue, so ask how it feels for a smaller wedding.
Pestana Cidadela Cascais — Cascais
A hotel inside the Cascais citadel, around a tower from the late 15th century, with views of the sea and the marina and 11 event spaces. The Conde de Cantanhede room takes a banquet of 300. Rooms and suites on site.
For photos: fortress walls and courtyard, with the sea and the marina in view.
Fortaleza do Guincho — Cascais
A 17th-century fort turned hotel on the wild Guincho coast, inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, with a Michelin-starred restaurant. The Medieval Room seats about 120 (150 standing). 27 rooms.
For photos: west-facing — the sun sets into the Atlantic. Guincho is known for wind, so think about veils and an indoor ceremony plan.
By the sea and the river
Farol Hotel — Cascais
A design hotel built on the rocks by the Cascais lighthouse. The Deck on the Rocks takes a small reception (about 20 seated, 40 standing) with the waves underneath; Coconuts, behind a long glass façade facing the ocean, seats about 300.
For photos: the sea right there, and a glass room that keeps the view when the weather turns.
Grande Real Villa Itália — Cascais
A sea-front hotel in the former residence of King Umberto II of Italy. Ceremonies by the pool with the Atlantic behind, terraces with sea views, and the Príncipe de Sabóia room for up to 400.
For photos: a ceremony facing the ocean — ask where the sun will be at your hour.
Areias do Seixo — Póvoa de Penafirme, Torres Vedras
A small eco-hotel on the Silver Coast, north of Lisbon near Torres Vedras, set between cliffs, pine woods, dunes and the sea; it offers weddings and elopements. The site gives no guest maximum.
For photos: dunes and a wild beach for portraits; ask about wind and the covered option.
SUD Lisboa — Belém, Lisbon
A riverside venue next to the MAAT museum, with a top-floor pool lounge looking at the 25 de Abril bridge and Cristo Rei, a restaurant and an event hall. It runs a “Wedding Club”; the site gives no guest maximum.
For photos: the bridge at sunset, and Belém’s riverside for a walk before dinner.

What to ask any of them
- Exclusivity. Is yours the only wedding that day, and will hotel guests share the gardens?
- The hour. Where is the sun at your ceremony time, and where does it set? On the Cascais coast it sets over the sea; in Sintra the hills may be in cloud.
- Indoor plan B. Which room takes the ceremony and the dinner if it rains — and is it held for you? See the rain plan.
- Rules in heritage buildings. Flash, candles, confetti, drones (much of Sintra and Cascais lies in a natural park), and amplified music after a set hour.
- Getting-ready rooms. Rooms with big windows make the morning photos; ask which ones you get.
- A civil ceremony on site. A registrar can marry you outside the Conservatória by arrangement, for an IRN fee of €200 instead of €120 plus the registrar’s transport — ask the Conservatória before you book the venue on that basis (a civil wedding in Portugal for foreigners).
Questions couples ask
Can you get married in a palace in Sintra?
Yes. Parques de Sintra rents spaces for weddings at the Palácio de Monserrate and the Palácio Nacional de Queluz, from a ruined chapel for about 25 people to gardens for about 280 seated. Tivoli Palácio de Seteais is an 18th-century palace hotel that offers exclusive use for up to 120 guests.
Which wedding venues near Lisbon have rooms for guests?
Among the venues in this guide, Penha Longa Resort has 204 rooms, Pestana Palace 190, Olissippo Lapa Palace 95, Tivoli Palácio de Seteais 30 and Fortaleza do Guincho 27. Quinta de Sant’Ana sleeps 43 in six houses and Quinta do Torneiro 16. Monserrate, Queluz and Convento do Beato have none.
Where can we get married by the sea near Lisbon?
On the Cascais coast: Fortaleza do Guincho (a 17th-century fort), Farol Hotel (a deck on the rocks), Grande Real Villa Itália (a poolside ceremony facing the Atlantic) and Pestana Cidadela Cascais (a citadel over the bay). Further north, Areias do Seixo sits between dunes and the sea near Torres Vedras.
What is the biggest wedding venue around Lisbon?
Of the venues we checked, Convento do Beato’s cloister seats about 1,000. Pestana Palace lists up to 500 guests across its spaces and Penha Longa about 500 for a banquet. Figures are the venues’ own, as of October 2026, and depend on the layout.
Can we have a civil ceremony at the venue rather than at the registry office?
By arrangement, a registrar can marry you at another place: the IRN fee is then €200 instead of €120 (as of October 2026), and you provide or pay for the registrar’s transport. Whether that is possible for your date, hour and venue is up to the Conservatória. Ask them before booking anything that depends on it, and ask the venue too.
Do we pay a fee for wedding photos in the Sintra palace parks?
If you take portraits at Pena, Monserrate or another Parques de Sintra park during normal visiting hours, yes: a €150 image fee at the ticket office covers six people (October 2026), with no tripods, external flash, reflectors or drones. Renting a space for the wedding itself is arranged separately with Parques de Sintra.
Once you have a shortlist, share it with a photographer who has worked there — ask where they would put the ceremony and the portraits. Browse the photographers, or tell us your date and venue and see who is free.
