A harbour town under its castle and the Montgó, with a town hall that will marry you on the castle’s esplanade, in a hotel or in its council chamber, and a rocky shore that takes the dawn.
Dénia lies on the sea between a castle on a hill in the middle of town and the Montgó, the massif of its natural park.
Its castle goes back to the 11th and 12th centuries, when it belonged to the Taifa kingdom of Dénia, and was rebuilt several times up to the 17th. North of the harbour run almost 17 km of beaches, mostly sand; to the south the coast turns to rock at Les Rotes, inside the Cap de Sant Antoni marine reserve. UNESCO named Dénia a Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015, and the dinner is rarely an afterthought here.
Its council sets itself up openly for weddings: a protocol office with its own rule sheet, a flat fee that follows you to a hotel or a restaurant, and the castle’s open-air esplanade for civil or symbolic ceremonies. The day tends to run from the old town and the harbour to a table by the water, with Baix la Mar’s painted houses in between and the ferry to Ibiza and Formentera going out behind you.

Ceremonies
The tourist board offers the castle’s open-air esplanade for civil or symbolic ceremonies, with the town and the sea below; you book it with the town’s protocol office. The castle’s public access is on foot by stairs and a ramp, or uphill along Carrer Sant Francesc without steps; a car may reach the esplanade only for people with reduced mobility, with prior authorisation. Ask the office what the castle costs and how many it holds: we found no current figure.
Civil ceremonies at Plaça de la Constitució 10 cost €100 from Monday to Friday morning and €175 on Friday afternoons and at weekends (protocol sheet, 2025). Set-up is included but not flowers: tell the office a week ahead if you want them, and no candles or torches. Inside the buildings and on the steps no rice or petals are allowed; rice only in the square. Fireworks need a separate permit and may be fired only from Carrer Loreto.
At the €175 rate the town’s councillor will also marry you in a hall, hotel or restaurant anywhere in the municipality; there the set-up is your own. The tourist board lists the Real Club Náutico de Dénia, whose halls and terraces look over the marina and the bay and take both the ceremony and the banquet, and hotels with gardens or terraces.
The tourist board also lists a ceremony on a catamaran, and a sailing at sunset before the wedding. Ask the operator and the protocol office whether a ceremony at sea can be the legal one or only a symbolic one.
The tourist board names three parishes for religious ceremonies — Our Lady of the Assumption, San Antonio de Padua and San Miguel Arcángel — and hermitages run by the parishes for small ones. None publishes its own rules: write to the parish well ahead.

Portraits
Medieval gates, the 15th-century Torre del Consell, Renaissance bastions and the ruins of the Governor’s Palace, with the town, the sea and the Montgó around you. Check the hours against the sunset: in June it closes at 20:00, before the sun goes down at 21:27 (15 June 2027), but from 1 July to 15 September it stays open to midnight, so the 20:09 sunset of 15 September is inside it. Entry stops half an hour before closing.
The old seafarers’ quarter between the port and the castle walls: mostly pedestrian streets, low houses painted in bright colours, and a row of terraces. A short walk from Carrer Loreto and the town hall, so it fits straight after a ceremony in the chamber.
South of the harbour the sand gives way to rocky coves — El Trampolí, Punta Negra, Arenetes — along a path of 4–5 km, facing the sunrise: 06:34 on 15 June 2027, 07:41 on 15 September. This is a marine reserve. The end of the path brings the Torre del Gerro, a 16th-century watchtower of 13.5 metres looking over the cape, reached by a steep last stretch (you can’t go inside).
A sea cave cut into the cliffs of the Montgó, for couples happy to walk or come by boat. In 2026 a free online permit was needed from 28 March to 13 April, from 28 April to 5 May and from 15 June to 15 October: booked only ten days ahead and good for 90 minutes. There’s no phone signal or lifeguard, and it isn’t a place for a long dress.
Through the year
AEMET publishes no normals for Dénia, which lies between its Valencia and Alicante stations (8416 and 8025, 1981–2010): both average highs of 23–24 °C in May, 27–28 °C in June and about 28 °C in September, and 30–31 °C in August. Autumn rain is the thing to plan for. October averages 77 mm at Valencia and 47 mm at Alicante, September 70 and 56 mm, with more thunderstorm days than any other month, so keep a covered plan until November. The sun sets inland: 21:27 on 15 June 2027, with golden light from 20:47 to 21:46 (NOAA’s solar equations), and 20:09 on 15 September. In high season the last stretch of Les Rotes is closed to cars.

Practical
Alicante airport is about 100 km away and Valencia’s about 113 km, each 1 to 1.5 hours by road along the AP-7. ALSA buses from both cities take 1.5–2 hours; TRAM line 9 runs to Benidorm in 82 minutes (17 departures a day), with line 1 on to Alicante. From Valencia there’s no direct train: the C-1 to Gandía, then the bus. Baleària’s fast ferry from Ibiza takes about 2 h 15 min.
For a weekend wedding in the square, ask the protocol office at least a week ahead for a permit to park two cars nearby, giving their models and plates. For Les Rotes in high season, leave the car at Ctra. Barranc del Monyo 96 and take the free tourist train (9:00–14:00 and 16:00–20:00) or the bus.
Photographs are allowed in the council chamber during and after the ceremony as long as they don’t hold up the next one. Shoots in the Montgó park go through its visitor centre in Dénia (parque_montgo@gva.es), and on the coast through the Costas office in Alicante. Under Real Decreto 517/2024 the town and its beaches with facilities count as urban for drones: five days’ notice to the Interior Ministry.
The town hall marries you only after a judge or notary has authorised it. The file opens with a notary or at the Civil Registry where one of you is registered as a resident, with a certificate showing your address for the last two years; a file from another town’s registry passes through Dénia’s, while a notary’s doesn’t. Certificates in another language need an apostille and a sworn translation. You can reserve the date before any of this.
Questions
Yes: the town’s tourist board offers the Explanada del Governador, in the open air, for civil or symbolic ceremonies, and you book it with the protocol office (96 643 17 39, protocol@ayto-denia.es). Ask there for the fee and the number of guests.
The town’s fee is €100 on a weekday morning at the town hall and €175 on a Friday afternoon or at a weekend, at the town hall or in a hall, hotel or restaurant in the municipality (2025). If you cancel at least 48 hours ahead in writing, half is refunded (2024 ordinance).
A civil wedding needs a file opened where one of you is registered as a resident in Spain. Couples who both live abroad usually marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here, which the castle’s esplanade also takes.
At the town hall, rice only out in the square and never on the stairs: the town holds you responsible if someone falls. Petals and similar aren’t allowed inside or outside the building, and fireworks need a permit and may only go off in Carrer Loreto.
Dawn on the rocks at Les Rotes, where the sun comes up from the sea, and the last hour of light from the castle in high summer, when it stays open past sunset. In June it closes at 20:00, well before the 21:27 sunset.
