Spain
Basque Country & the North
Green mountains falling into the Atlantic, the bay of San Sebastián and Rioja’s vineyards inland — a cooler, greener Spain with a famous table.
Spain’s north coast is green Spain: the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias, where mountains drop to the Bay of Biscay in cliffs, coves and long surf beaches. San Sebastián curves around a shell-shaped bay; Bilbao is a river city of iron bridges and bold new architecture.
Inland, over the hills, the vineyards of Rioja spread along the Ebro valley, with wineries both centuries old and strikingly modern. It suits couples who care about food and wine, love green landscapes and don’t mind a cloudy sky.

Through the year
When to marry in the Basque Country & the North
June to September is the season: the warmest, most settled weeks, though rain can come in any month here — the landscape is green for a reason. Rioja, inland, is much drier and sunnier, and the harvest from late September into October is beautiful.

- Late springEverything is green, the hills are full of flowers and the days are long. Showers pass quickly — keep a plan B under cover.
- SummerMild, rarely hot by the sea, with the warmest water of the year. Sea mist can roll in and out within an hour.
- AutumnThe grape harvest in Rioja, golden vines and clear, cool days; on the coast, the rain returns from October.
Places
Where couples marry here
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Wineries in Rioja
Old stone cellars and bold modern wineries among the vines — the ceremony outside, dinner among the barrels.
Cliffs, coves and hermitages
Chapels on headlands reached by stone steps, sea stacks and long beaches — an elopement with the Atlantic all around you.
Farmhouses in the green hills
Old Basque farmhouses (caseríos) and country houses in the valleys, with meadows and mountains behind.
San Sebastián and Bilbao
A belle-époque seafront, old-town lanes and riverside architecture — a city ceremony, then a round of pintxos with the guests.
Light
How the light falls
The light is soft, filtered by Atlantic cloud, and it makes the green look greener — kind to skin and to dresses. When the sky clears after rain the air is sharp and the evening light long; photographers here work with the clouds rather than wait for the sun.
Travel
Getting there
Bilbao has the main airport, with smaller ones at San Sebastián and Santander, and Biarritz just across the French border. A car is the easy way along the coast and over to Rioja.
