Getting married in Menorca

Farm estates behind dry-stone walls, white coves under the pines and a north wind with its own name — the Balearics at a slower pace.

Menorca has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, and its Talayotic prehistoric sites joined the World Heritage List in 2023. Couples notice the countryside first: farm estates called llocs, which lived on milk and Maó cheese, and more than 11,000 km of dry-stone walls. Ciutadella, the capital until 1722, sits in the west; Maó, the capital today, in the east, on a natural harbour 5 km long.

It suits small weddings that take their time: a long table in the yard of a lloc, portraits in a cove at the end of a pine path. The wind matters more than on Mallorca, because Menorca has no mountains to break the tramuntana, a cold, dry north wind. The north coast is dark rock and wind-cut cliffs; the south, limestone, pines and white sand.

Ceremonies

Where couples marry in Menorca

  1. Farm estates (llocs)

The classic Menorcan setting: stone farm buildings, walled fields and room for dinner outside. Photos of a family celebration on a private estate don’t pay the Balearic fee for shoots in protected areas.

  2. Ciutadella’s cathedral

For a Catholic wedding: Santa Maria, built through the 14th century in Catalan Gothic and a cathedral since 1795, with a single nave whose width only Girona’s surpasses. Its bell tower rises from an old minaret.

  3. Ciutadella town hall’s rooms

Civil ceremonies in three municipal rooms for 10, 25 or 50 people, in the mornings and on Friday and Saturday evenings, lasting 15 to 30 minutes. Small by design — the party happens elsewhere.

  4. A cove or a lighthouse

For an elopement (a wedding for just the two of you): a southern cove at dawn or a north-coast lighthouse. A ceremony set up on a beach needs the Govern’s coast department and the town hall.

Through the year

When to marry in Menorca

AEMET’s normals for Menorca airport: average highs of 21.6 °C in May, 25.8 °C in June, 29.2 °C in August and 26.2 °C in September; July is the driest month, with 347 hours of sun. Autumn is wetter than on Ibiza — September and October have the most thunderstorm days, and November brings 88 mm of rain. The tramuntana blows mostly from September through the winter, seldom in summer. In Ciutadella, 23 and 24 June are Sant Joan, the horse festival, when the old town belongs to the fiesta.

Practical

Good to know before the day

  • The coves in summer

From 1 June Macarella is closed to private cars, with a shuttle bus from Ciutadella, and the other southern coves’ car parks fill by mid-morning. Plan dawn sessions — and how your photographer gets there with the gear.

  • Reading the wind

Locals pick the coast by the wind: with a north wind, go south; with a south wind, go north. Have a portrait spot on each coast and a sheltered courtyard as plan B.

  • Protected areas and drones

Photo shoots in protected areas such as s’Albufera des Grau need the Govern’s authorisation. The airport is just outside Maó: drones are banned within 6 km of each runway end and 5 km either side unless coordinated with it (Real Decreto 517/2024).

  • The legal route

A civil wedding needs the file approved by the civil registry where one of you lives; otherwise, a Catholic wedding through your home parish, or the legal wedding at home and a symbolic ceremony here.

Questions

Questions about marrying in Menorca

Is Menorca too windy for an outdoor wedding?

Rarely in summer: the tramuntana, the cold north wind, blows mostly from September through the winter. When it does, the south coast is sheltered — choose a venue with a covered or walled space.

Can we have our photos at Cala Macarella?

Yes, with a plan: from 1 June there is no car access, only the bus from Ciutadella or the coastal path. Go at dawn or in the last light, when the cove is quieter; a ceremony set up on the beach needs permits.

What is the best month to marry in Menorca?

June and the first half of September: average highs around 26 °C at the airport (AEMET), little rain and long evenings. July and August are hotter and busier; from late September the storms and the wind return.

Can we marry legally in Menorca?

By civil law only if one of you lives in Spain: Ciutadella, for example, needs the file approved by the civil registry where one of you lives. Otherwise, a Catholic wedding through your home parish, or a legal wedding at home and a symbolic ceremony here.

Where is the best sunset in Menorca?

On the west coast around Ciutadella, where the sun sets over open sea: the lighthouses of Punta Nati and Cap d’Artrutx are the classic places. Go on a clear evening when the wind has dropped, and keep back from the cliff edges.
