Toledo’s old city in low golden light on its hill above a bend of the Tagus, the cathedral spire and the Alcázar on the skyline, the river in the foreground

Wedding photographers in Toledo

A walled hill in a loop of the Tagus, with old country estates on the far bank looking straight back at it — and half an hour from Madrid by train.

Toledo, the capital of Castilla-La Mancha, stands on a hill that the Tagus wraps on three sides, and its whole old city has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986.

Two old bridges still lead into it: the Puente de Alcántara, Roman in origin and rebuilt in the Middle Ages, and the Puente de San Martín on the west, from the 13th century. The cathedral and the town hall face each other across one square, so a civil ceremony here starts in the centre of the old town.

Across the river are the cigarrales: country estates that began in the 16th century as summer retreats for Toledo’s nobles and wealthy townspeople, on the south and west of the city. Several now work as wedding estates, with the old city on the horizon, so a day here can be a ceremony in town or in a church, a portrait stop at a bridge, and dinner on the far bank as the stone turns gold. The old town’s lanes and hills are hard work in heels and in July: plan the day around shade, escalators and the last hour of light.

Ceremonies

Where couples marry in Toledo

  1. The Sala Capitular of the town hall

The council’s civil weddings are in the Sala Capitular of the Casa Consistorial, begun in 1575 and finished in 1703, on the square shared with the cathedral. Its ordinance charges €252.01 if one of you has been registered in Toledo for over six months and €441.06 if neither has (in force from January 2020); withdraw and half comes back. Ask the council for days and times: it publishes none.

  2. The cigarrales

Several of these estates on the south bank run as wedding venues, with viewpoints over the old city and gardens for a ceremony. The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Toledo lists the cigarrales as heritage at risk, since many have been lost or altered, so ask each estate what is original. The ordinance covers only the Sala Capitular: ask the council whether a legal ceremony can move to an estate, or plan a symbolic one.

  3. A church in the old city

Weddings have been reported at the parish of Santiago el Mayor and at the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. We found no parish or diocesan page with rules, so ask each church directly; a Catholic wedding has civil effect and needs no Spanish residence, with the file prepared through your home parish.

  4. The Palacio de Galiana

A Mudéjar palace on the bank of the Tagus, built under Alfonso X in the 13th century and restored from the 1950s, with gardens where society weddings have been held. It is privately owned: ask the owners whether it is available for yours.

Through the year

When to marry in Toledo

Toledo is much hotter than Segovia or the Sierra. AEMET’s city station (513 m, normals 1982–2010) averages highs of 24.2 °C in May, 30.5 °C in June, 34.6 °C in July, 34.0 °C in August, 29.0 °C in September and 22.1 °C in October. Rain falls on about six days in May and in October, about three in June and September, and one in July; storms come on about three days in May and June. Lows run from 11 °C in May to 19 °C in July. For an outdoor day, May and late September to October are the kindest; in high summer, move everything to the evening.

Practical

Good to know before the day

  • Getting there

Avant trains leave Madrid-Puerta de Atocha for Toledo’s Neo-Mudéjar station about hourly and take about 34 minutes. The station, finished in 1919, is on the Paseo de la Rosa, on the far side of the river from the old city.

  • Escalators for guests

Two sets of escalators take guests up the hill from below the walls. Recaredo runs from 7:00 to 23:00 from Monday to Thursday, to 2:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 8:00 at weekends; Safont runs from 7:00 to midnight, and to 2:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Hours change on feast days: check the council’s page. Plan the guests’ way back around them.

  • Cars and coaches

The old town’s streets are narrow, with a 20 km/h limit since 2021; coaches may not pass the Puerta del Cambrón. Ask the Policía Local about getting the couple’s car close on the day: we found no published rule for weddings.

  • Drones

A drone over the city is an urban flight: a registered operator must notify the Ministry of the Interior at least five days ahead (Real Decreto 517/2024).

  • The legal route

A civil wedding needs one of you to live in Spain, where the marriage file is opened; a Catholic one goes through your home parish; most couples from abroad marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here.

Questions

Questions about marrying in Toledo

How much does a civil wedding at Toledo’s town hall cost?

Under the council’s ordinance, in force from January 2020, €252.01 if one of you has been registered in the city for over six months and €441.06 if neither has. You pay when the date and hour are fixed, and half comes back if you withdraw. It covers the Sala Capitular only.

What is a cigarral?

A country estate on the south and west of Toledo, born in the 16th century as a place for the city’s nobles and merchants to spend the hot months. Many were farms for centuries and many have been lost or altered. Several today host weddings, most with a view of the old city from across the Tagus.

Where are the best photographs in Toledo?

The Mirador del Valle for the whole city at sunset, the Puente de San Martín in the evening, the Puente de Alcántara in the morning, and the shaded lanes around the cathedral through the hot hours. They are spread around the river, so allow a car between the viewpoint and the city.

When is the best time to marry in Toledo?

May and from late September into October: average highs of 22–29 °C. July and August average 34–35 °C at AEMET’s station, with a good deal of sun and very little rain, so hold anything outdoors from early evening. Sunset on 15 June 2027 is at 21:46.

Is Toledo a day trip or a wedding weekend?

With a train of about 34 minutes from Atocha, either works. Guests can stay inside the walls or outside them: inside means lanes and escalators, so check how luggage will reach the door. Toledo isn’t in the Madrid region; it is the capital of Castilla-La Mancha.
