The Alhambra on its hill, the white Albaicín facing it, the Sierra Nevada behind — a city where the best pictures depend on a permit and on the hour.
Granada is a city of hills. The Alhambra covers one; the Albaicín, the old quarter of white houses and walled gardens called cármenes, climbs the one opposite; the Darro runs between them. Couples marry here for that view, and because a small wedding needs little more than a garden and a viewpoint.
Two things shape the day. The Alhambra keeps its own rules: no weddings inside, but the city lends its palaces next door for civil ceremonies, and photos inside are possible with a permit. And the altitude: at 738 m, Granada cools fast after sunset — in July the airport averages 15.7 °C at night after 34.8 °C by day.
Photographers
They shoot everywhere in Andalusia — in Granada too. Their whole weddings are on their pages.

The council lends the Carmen de los Mártires, a 19th-century palace in more than seven hectares of gardens beside the Alhambra, and the Palacio de los Córdova in the Albaicín for civil ceremonies: 11:00 to 13:30, every half hour, 20 minutes at most. It provides the building; you bring everything else.
San Nicolás, by the famous viewpoint, holds weddings on Fridays and Saturdays at 11:30 and 18:30 all year; photographs are allowed during the ceremony, rice and petals are not. San Pedro y San Pablo stands on the Carrera del Darro, below the Alhambra.
The Carthusian monastery takes weddings through the Archdiocese at 13:00 or in the evening (20:00 from April to October), with the church yours for two hours and about 170 seats. Photographs only in the church and outside.
Granada’s own kind of house: walled, with terraced gardens and, on the right slope, the Alhambra across the valley. Private ones in the Albaicín host dinners and symbolic ceremonies — ask each how caterers and older guests get up the hill.

Portraits
With the Patronato’s authorisation, asked at least 15 days ahead: up to four people, and only the Patio de los Arrayanes, the Patio de los Leones, Lindaraja, the Partal and the Jardines Bajos, in a morning (08:30–14:00) or afternoon slot. No tripods; bring the authorisation and your original ID.
The Alhambra lies south-east of San Nicolás, so the evening sun lights its walls face-on — the famous moment, and the most crowded; at sunrise the square is empty and the palace backlit. San Cristóbal, higher up, adds the Albaicín’s roofs. Sunset on 15 June 2027: about 21:36.
The pedestrian lane along the Darro from Plaza Nueva, with its old stone bridges, ends at the Paseo de los Tristes under the Alhambra’s walls. The narrow valley loses direct sun early, which is kind to faces in summer.
If you marry there, the portraits are steps away: a French garden, a palm garden, a lake and a Nasrid patio, with the city below. A late-morning ceremony means hard light, so work in the shade of the trees.
Through the year
Late April to June and mid-September to October are Granada’s best months. AEMET’s 1981–2010 normals for the airport (at 560 m; the city sits higher, at 738 m) give 25.0 °C by day and 9.4 °C at night in May, and 23.2 °C and 8.7 °C in October; July and August pass 34 °C by day and drop to about 15.5 °C at night. Winter is cold — 0.0 °C on an average January night — and November and December are the wettest months. Holy Week (21–28 March in 2027) fills the city.
Andalusia, month by month
Practical
The airport is about 15 km west of the city; Málaga’s has many more flights. High-speed trains link Granada with Madrid. Lodge guests near Plaza Nueva or in the Realejo and much of the day can be walked, hills included.
Bollards close the Albaicín to cars without a permit. For a wedding in one of its churches, write to the council with the day, hour and place and your cars’ number plates. Caterers need their own permit, with the vehicles’ technical sheets: the lanes have width and height limits.
The city counts as urban under Spain’s drone rules: a registered operator notifies the Ministry of the Interior at least five days ahead and flies no higher than 120 m. Ask the Patronato before planning anything near the Alhambra.
Civil weddings in the city’s palaces need one of you to live in Spain, where the marriage file is opened; a Catholic one goes through your home parish; most couples from abroad marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here.
Questions
Yes, with a paid authorisation from the Patronato de la Alhambra, requested at least 15 days ahead: up to four people, in five named courtyards and gardens, in a morning or an afternoon slot, and no tripods.
Not inside the monument. Right beside it, the city’s Carmen de los Mártires holds civil ceremonies between 11:00 and 13:30, and a symbolic ceremony can be held in a private garden with the Alhambra in view.
At sunset the sun lights the Alhambra face-on, which is why the square is packed then. At sunrise it is nearly empty, with the palace against the light and the Sierra Nevada behind. You can do both: sunrise for quiet portraits, sunset for the classic view.
Colder than people expect: at the airport, July nights average 15.7 °C after 34.8 °C days, and October nights 8.7 °C. Tell guests to bring a layer, and plan heaters for a spring or autumn dinner outside.
