Wedding venues in Greece: caldera terraces, chapels, beach clubs and olive estates

What couples marry in across Greece — cliff-top terraces and wineries, whitewashed chapels, beach clubs, olive estates, island villas, resorts and old towns — with seventeen places that say on their own sites they host weddings, which of them can hold the legal ceremony, and the rules for chapels, beaches and ancient sites.

In short

  • Greece’s wedding venues follow its landscapes: cliff-top terraces and wineries on Santorini, villas and chapels on Mykonos, harbours and villas on Paros, Naxos and Milos, resorts, stone villages and olive estates on Crete, villas in Corfu, resorts and Lindos on Rhodes, estates and coastal resorts in the Peloponnese, and Riviera hotels near Athens.
  • A civil wedding happens at the town hall or another place the municipality allows: Rethymno charges €100 at its town hall, €150 in its St Lazaros chapel and €300 in other public spaces on weekdays (October 2026).
  • An Orthodox wedding belongs in a parish church: the Holy Synod’s 2019 conditions forbid weddings in private churches on estates or in hotels, and in outlying chapels, except with the local Metropolitan’s permission — and never in a monastery church.
  • Capacities on the venues’ own sites run from 25 guests on a Santorini caldera terrace to 100 seated at a Santorini winery and 230 in a Mykonos amphitheatre; a buyout of Amanzoe in the Peloponnese takes 38 pavilions, 3 beach pavilions and 12 villas.
  • On the Natura 2000 beaches protected since 2024 — 251 since April 2026 — events of more than ten people are banned; professional photography at ancient sites needs the Ephorate of Antiquities’ licence.

This is a guide to the kinds of place, region by region, with a shortlist of real venues. Every venue named says on its own website that it hosts weddings, and every capacity is its own figure, checked in October 2026; capacity depends on the layout, so treat it as a first filter. We give no prices, and none is a partner of Lens & Vows: check directly with the venue. Each venue’s page is in the sources.

Still choosing between a terrace over the sea and an estate among olive trees? Choosing a venue style compares them, and the best time to marry in Greece has each region’s weather, wind and light.

What kind of place, in which region?

  • Athens & the Riviera: rooftop terraces facing the Acropolis for a small day; hotels and villas over the Saronic Gulf down to Sounion.
  • Santorini: hotel and villa terraces on the caldera’s edge, whitewashed chapels, wineries on the outer slopes.
  • Mykonos: hillside villas with pools over the sea, chapels, beach restaurants in the south-coast coves.
  • Paros, Naxos & Milos: chapels by the sea, island villas, harbours and old towns.
  • Crete: resorts with their own coves on the Gulf of Mirabello, stone villas and restored villages among olive groves, Chania’s Venetian harbour.
  • Corfu & the Ionian Islands: villas and old estates among olive trees, gardens over the sea, Venetian lanes for portraits.
  • Rhodes & the Dodecanese: east-coast resorts, Lindos’s village hotels, the medieval old town for portraits.
  • The Peloponnese: resort estates on Messinia’s coast, a buyout in the Argolid, olive estates near Monemvasia.
  • Civil. The mayor or a deputy marries you before two adult witnesses, at the town hall or another place the town sets — since 2017 a mayor may name more than one municipal building or the town’s outdoor public spaces (Law 4483/2017, art. 131). Each municipality sets its own list and fees: Rethymno, on Crete, marries couples at its town hall (€100 on weekdays, €120 at weekends), its St Lazaros chapel in the old town (€150 / €180) or other public spaces (€300 / €400), asked for at least three working days ahead. Some hotels say they arrange civil ceremonies elsewhere — Costa Navarino “outdoors on a beautiful beach, on a boat, atop a hill” — so ask the venue which town hall it works with, and confirm with the town hall.
  • Orthodox. The Holy Synod’s 2019 conditions say the sacrament is always celebrated in the parish church. Weddings in private churches — on private estates or in hotels — and in outlying chapels are forbidden under encyclical 2968/2015; the only exceptions are a private church for its owner’s family, or a parish chapel, with the local Metropolitan’s permission at his discretion. Monastery churches are strictly excluded. Several hotels below advertise religious weddings in their chapels: ask to see the Metropolitan’s permission.
  • Symbolic. Anywhere the owner or the authorities allow, at any hour, in your own words. Most couples from abroad marrying at a hotel or villa hold one, with the legal part at a town hall or at home. Getting married in Greece has the documents.

Athens and the Riviera

In the city, rooftop terraces in the old centre put the floodlit Parthenon behind a small ceremony or dinner. Down the coast, hotels and villas have gardens over the Saronic Gulf, with the sun setting over the water.

  • Cape Sounio (Grecotel), Sounion: a resort on two beaches, among pine forest, looking towards the Temple of Poseidon; listed on Grecotel’s wedding page. No capacity published.

Santorini

The classic is a terrace on the caldera’s edge: a few rows of chairs, the drowned volcano behind the vows, the sunset into the sea. Terraces are small and often reached by steps; the wind is strongest on summer afternoons. Wineries on the outer slopes give more room.

  • Canaves, Oia: three terraces — the Panorama Balcony at Canaves Oia Suites (up to 30), the rooftop Veranda at Canaves Sunday (up to 40) and the Sunset Terrace at Canaves Epitome (up to 25); elopements too.
  • Santorini Gem: a ceremony venue facing the volcano, a dining area, a pool over the caldera and a wedding villa on the cliffs. No capacity published.
  • Santo Wines, Pyrgos: a winery with terraces over the caldera; its events page gives an indoor space for up to 110.
  • Venetsanos Winery: the island’s first industrial winery, carved into the cliff; its open-air area seats about 100 at round tables, or 160 standing.

Mykonos

Hillside villas with an infinity pool hold the ceremony, dinner and the guests’ rooms in one place; chapels sit on headlands; beach restaurants in the south-coast coves are sheltered from the north wind.

  • Mykonos Grand, Agios Ioannis: a whitewashed chapel to the Virgin Mary on a hill above the beach — 25 inside, outdoor ceremonies for up to 100 — and a stone amphitheatre for 200 at a cocktail or 100 at a banquet.
  • Mykonos Lolita (Grecotel), past Agios Sostis: a small hotel on a secluded beach, with its own whitewashed chapel above the Aegean.

Paros, Naxos and Milos

Weddings here are small and close to the sea: a chapel on a headland, a villa with rooms for the guests, a long table on a harbour, then a boat to the coves for portraits.

  • Yria, Parasporos bay, Paros: a garden hotel near Parikia whose events page names weddings. No capacity published.

Crete

Two kinds dominate: resorts around Elounda with their own coves and lawns, and stone houses or restored villages in the hills behind Chania and Rethymno, with long tables under the olive trees. Chania’s Venetian harbour is for portraits and dinner by the water.

  • Elounda Beach Hotel & Villas, with Elounda Bay Palace: waterfront villas and suites on the Gulf of Mirabello; its wedding package handles the licence paperwork and takes you to register the marriage.
  • Agreco Farm (Grecotel), Adele near Rethymno: a traditional farm with a farm-to-table tavern and live music; listed on Grecotel’s wedding page.
  • Amirandes (Grecotel), near Heraklion: a resort styled on Minoan and Venetian water palaces; listed on Grecotel’s wedding page.

Corfu and the Ionian Islands

Villas with gardens and pools on the hills, old manor houses among centuries-old olive trees with lights strung through the branches, and the Venetian old town — a UNESCO site — for portraits.

  • Corfu Imperial (Grecotel), Kommeno peninsula: a hotel above the olive groves at the tip of the peninsula, listed on Grecotel’s wedding page.

Rhodes and the Dodecanese

The sheltered east coast has resorts with beach ceremonies and terraces; Lindos has village hotels below its acropolis; the medieval old town of Rhodes, a UNESCO site, is for portraits.

  • Melenos, Lindos: a small hotel for civil, symbolic or Orthodox weddings, which suggests taking the whole hotel for at least three nights, with more guests ten minutes’ walk away.
  • Atrium Hotels: an amphitheatre steps from the beach and a chapel reached by a bridge at Atrium Prestige; it also arranges ceremonies at Kallithea Springs and at St Paul’s chapel in Lindos (where to elope in Greece has what we found about St Paul’s).

The Peloponnese

Estates take the whole weekend: resorts on Messinia’s sandy coast, a buyout in the hills of the Argolid, olive and citrus estates near Monemvasia — with long tables outside and dinner late into a warm night.

  • Costa Navarino, Messinia: a resort estate whose page offers religious weddings in its chapels of St Samson and St Eleni, and civil ceremonies arranged at town halls or outdoors.
  • Amanzoe, Kranidi: weddings of all sizes; a buyout takes 38 pavilions, 3 beach pavilions and 12 villas, with an amphitheatre for the reception.
  • Kinsterna, near Monemvasia: an estate of olive, vine and citrus facing Monemvasia’s rock, for weddings and elopements over several days.

Beaches and ancient sites

  • Beaches. On the Natura 2000 beaches listed as protected under the 2024 joint decision — 251 since April 2026, Elafonisi on Crete among them — events of more than ten people, tables, chairs, umbrellas, amplified music and vehicles are banned. Elsewhere, a ceremony on the sand usually goes through a beach club or hotel that holds a concession for its stretch.
  • Ancient sites. Professional photography needs a licence from the competent Ephorate of Antiquities (Ministerial Decision of 2005). The same decision mentions social events at monuments only as subject to fees set after the Central Archaeological Council’s opinion; it names no weddings. Plan the ceremony nearby and the portraits within the site’s rules.

What to ask any venue

  • The legal part. Which town hall marries couples there, or nearby, and whether a church ceremony has the Metropolitan’s permission.
  • Wind and heat. A sheltered or covered spot for a meltemi afternoon, shade for a summer ceremony.
  • Steps and access. Caldera terraces are often reached on foot down steps: ask about older guests.
  • The whole place, and for how long? Melenos suggests three nights; an Amanzoe buyout takes every pavilion and villa.
  • Caterer, planner, music. Whose they are, and when music must stop.
  • Your own photographer. Whether the venue charges outside suppliers or limits drones; get it in writing — what a wedding photographer costs in Greece covers the rest.
  • Transfers and rooms. How guests get there, and where those who don’t sleep on site stay.

This shortlist names one to four places in each region; each has many more. For something smaller, where to elope in Greece has the viewpoints, beaches and old towns.

Questions couples ask

Can we get legally married at a hotel in Greece?

A civil wedding takes place at the town hall or another place the municipality allows, so it depends on the town: Rethymno, for one, marries couples at its town hall, a chapel in the old town or other public spaces. Some hotels say they arrange civil ceremonies at the venue or outdoors. Ask the venue which town hall it works with, and confirm with the town hall.

Can we have an Orthodox wedding in a hotel chapel in Greece?

As a rule, no. The Holy Synod’s 2019 conditions say an Orthodox wedding takes place in the parish church, and forbid weddings in private churches on estates or in hotels, except with the local Metropolitan’s permission; monastery churches are always excluded. A hotel chapel usually hosts a symbolic ceremony.

Can we have a beach wedding in Greece?

Yes, through a beach club or hotel on most beaches. On the Natura 2000 beaches protected since 2024 — 251 since April 2026, Elafonisi among them — events of more than ten people, chairs and amplified music are banned, so only a very small ceremony fits.

Can we get married at an ancient site in Greece?

Not as a matter of course. Professional photography at archaeological sites needs a licence from the Ephorate of Antiquities, and the 2005 decision on monuments mentions social events only as subject to fees set after the Central Archaeological Council’s opinion. Couples hold the ceremony nearby — Cape Sounio has resorts within sight of the temple.

What are the best wedding venues in Santorini?

Among those that say on their own sites they host weddings, as of October 2026: Canaves in Oia, with caldera terraces for 25 to 40 guests; Santorini Gem, a venue and villa on the caldera cliffs; and two wineries — Santo Wines in Pyrgos, and Venetsanos, which seats about 100.

Which Greek venues can we take over entirely?

On their own sites: Amanzoe in the Peloponnese, whose buyout takes 38 pavilions, 3 beach pavilions and 12 villas; Melenos in Lindos, which suggests the whole hotel for at least three nights; and Kinsterna near Monemvasia, which hosts celebrations over several days.
