Where to elope in Greece: 13 places, from Santorini’s caldera to the Mani

Thirteen named places across the Cyclades, Athens, Crete, the Ionian, Rhodes and the Peloponnese — what each looks like, how you reach it, when the light is right, and which tickets, permits, protected-beach rules and winds to plan around.

In short

  • Greece’s classic elopement backdrops are Santorini’s caldera at sunrise, Mykonos’s Little Venice, the white rock of Milos, the Portara on Naxos, Cape Sounion, Crete’s Balos and Elafonisi, Corfu’s Porto Timoni, Kefalonia’s Myrtos, Lindos on Rhodes, Monemvasia, the Mani and Voidokilia.
  • Unlike in France or Spain, an elopement in Greece can be your legal wedding: a civil wedding at the town hall needs documents from home, a few days on the spot — two working days on Mykonos, a week on Santorini — and two adult witnesses; a symbolic ceremony has no legal effect.
  • Professional photography at Greek archaeological sites needs the Ephorate of Antiquities’ licence (Ministerial Decision of 2005); Sounion and Lindos’s acropolis charge €20, and Lindos’s closes at 20:00 even in June, before sunset.
  • On the Natura 2000 beaches protected since 2024 — 251 of them since April 2026, Elafonisi among them — events of more than ten people, chairs, umbrellas and amplified music are banned.
  • On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 20:38 in Oia, 20:26 at Lindos and 21:11 at Porto Timoni; the meltemi, the dry north wind of the Aegean summer, is strongest in the afternoon, so dawn is calmer as well as emptier.

Real places: what each looks like, how you get there, when the light is right, which rules we could confirm officially, and the region page to read next. The best time to marry in Greece has each region’s weather month by month.

Two things decide more than the place. The hour: famous views are empty at dawn, when the summer wind is lightest. The rules: portraits rarely need anything; chairs, guests, a drone or an ancient site usually do.

Yes — unlike in France or Spain. Couples who don’t live in Greece can marry at a town hall: you hand in your documents, apostilled and translated into Greek, in person; timings vary — a week on Santorini, two working days on Mykonos. The mayor or a deputy marries you before two adult witnesses, and the wedding is registered within 40 days. An Orthodox wedding is binding too, if one of you is Orthodox. Or marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here. Getting married in Greece has the documents and each town hall’s rules.

Rules that apply almost everywhere

  • Ancient sites. Amateur photos without flash are free; professional photography needs a licence from the competent Ephorate of Antiquities, issued before the shoot, with a fee set by the kind of shoot — higher with people in the frame (Ministerial Decision of 2005). We found no current fee schedule: your photographer asks. Sounion and Lindos close on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday and 25–26 December.
  • Drones. Check the HCAA’s DAGR map before any flight: over archaeological sites and near airports, flights need the Authority’s permission, asked at least five days ahead, or are banned. In the EU open category a drone stays below 120 m and never flies over a gathering of people.
  • Protected beaches. On the Natura 2000 beaches listed by the 2024 joint decision on protected beaches — 251 since April 2026 — motor vehicles, events of more than ten people, amplified music and tables, chairs, umbrellas or sunbeds are all banned. An elopement with a photographer fits; a seated ceremony for twenty doesn’t.
  • Wind and ferries. The meltemi blows from about mid-May to mid-September, strongest in July and August and in the afternoon; at force 7–8 most inter-island ferries can’t sail. Keep a spare day before your flight home.
  • Chapels belong to a parish or a family: for a symbolic ceremony in a chapel’s courtyard, ask the priest or the owner first. Orthodox churches hold no weddings in Lent or from 1 to 15 August.

Santorini

1. Oia, Imerovigli and Skaros rock at sunrise

White villages on the rim of the caldera, with blue domes, cave houses and the volcano’s islands in the bay below. Oia is the famous one; Imerovigli, north of Fira, has Skaros rock, where a Venetian castle stood from 1207.

  • Crowds: Oia fills for the sunset, so photographers start at sunrise, with empty lanes and soft light — the villages face west, so the sun rises behind you.
  • Rules: we found no town rule for photo sessions in the lanes. Many terraces, rooftops and church steps are private or belong to a church: ask before stepping onto them.
  • Light: sunrise 06:00 and sunset 20:38 in Oia on 15 June 2027; 07:01 and 19:27 on 15 September.
  • Region: Santorini.

Mykonos

2. Little Venice and the windmills

The captains’ houses of Little Venice hang their balconies over the sea, below the windmills on the ridge, at the edge of Chora’s whitewashed lanes.

  • Light: the town faces west, so its sunsets are famous and busy — 20:41 on 15 June 2027. Only early mornings are empty.
  • Wind: after a day of meltemi the air is clear; the south-coast beaches are sheltered from it.
  • Region: Mykonos.

Paros, Naxos and Milos

3. Sarakiniko and the coves of Milos

Grey-white volcanic rock on Milos’s north shore, shaped by the waves and the north wind into smooth, strange forms above turquoise water; elsewhere on the island, coves of red, yellow and grey rock and fishing villages with boathouses cut into the cliffs.

  • Wind: Sarakiniko faces the north wind, so on a meltemi day pick a sheltered cove or come at dawn.
  • Getting there: flights from Athens or ferries from Piraeus; the sea caves are reached on foot or by boat.
  • Light: sunrise 06:03, sunset 20:43 on 15 June 2027.
  • Region: Paros, Naxos & Milos.

4. The Portara, Naxos

The marble doorway of a temple to Apollo, begun around 530 BC and never finished — about 6 m high — on the islet of Palatia, joined to Naxos town’s harbour by a causeway built in 1919.

  • Access: entry to the islet is free, and crowds gather there for the sunset in summer.
  • Permits: it is an ancient monument, so ask the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades whether a professional session needs a licence.
  • Light: the doorway frames the sunset over the sea — 20:40 on 15 June 2027; at dawn you are often alone.
  • Region: Paros, Naxos & Milos.

Athens and the Riviera

5. Cape Sounion

The Temple of Poseidon on its cliff at the tip of Attica, at the end of the coast road south from Athens.

  • Opening hours and tickets: daily from 09:30 until sunset, last admission 20 minutes before closing; €20, reduced €10 (Hellenic Heritage, October 2026).
  • Permits: professional photography inside the site needs the Ephorate’s licence. The site closes at sunset, so a sunset session inside ends with the sun.
  • Light: sunset 20:47 on 15 June 2027 and 19:32 on 15 September, into the sea to the west.
  • Region: Athens & the Riviera.

Crete

6. Balos

A shallow turquoise lagoon of white sand between the tip of the Gramvousa peninsula and the islet of Cape Tigani, in Crete’s far north-west.

  • Getting there: most visitors arrive by boat from Kissamos around the middle of the day. By road, a 10 km dirt track from Kalyviani leads to a car park above the lagoon, past a checkpoint where you pay a small ticket for the road and the site’s protection; then about 1 km down a cobbled path, 10–20 minutes, and a hard climb back at midday (cretanbeaches.com).
  • Rules: the lagoon is in a Natura 2000 area and turtles nest on the beach; take nothing away.
  • Light: come early, before the boats; the sun sets over the sea at 20:43 on 15 June 2027.
  • Region: Crete.

7. Elafonisi

Pale pink-tinged sand and shallow turquoise water around a small island off Crete’s south-west tip.

  • Rules: Elafonisi is on the protected-beaches list (Natura site GR4340002): no events of more than ten people, no chairs or umbrellas, no amplified music, no vehicles on the beach. A 2023 joint decision also bars vehicles and caravans from its core zone.
  • Light: it faces the sunset — 20:42 on 15 June 2027; early morning before the day visitors arrive is quietest.
  • Region: Crete.

Corfu and the Ionian Islands

8. Porto Timoni, Corfu

A double beach on either side of a green headland on Corfu’s north-west coast, below the village of Afionas.

  • Getting there: about 20 minutes on foot from Afionas, past the ruins of medieval walls that guarded the village from pirates.
  • Light: the west coast takes the sunset — 21:11 on 15 June 2027, the latest of these places — and the headland catches the last light.
  • Region: Corfu & the Ionian Islands.

9. Myrtos, Kefalonia

An arc of white pebbles and turquoise water between two mountains in north-west Kefalonia.

  • Getting there: a steep, winding 2 km road of hairpin bends from Divarata, with parking at the foot of the cliffs; in summer a bus from Agia Efimia stops on the road.
  • Not Navagio: on Zakynthos, Navagio’s beach and the water within 50 m of its shore are closed until 31 October 2026, and the clifftop can be seen only from the observation platform once its fencing is finished (To Vima, June 2026).
  • Light: sunset 21:03 on 15 June 2027.
  • Region: Corfu & the Ionian Islands.

Rhodes and the Dodecanese

10. Lindos and St Paul’s Bay

A white village climbing to an ancient acropolis on Rhodes’s east coast, with St Paul’s Bay and its small chapel below.

  • The acropolis: open 08:00–20:00 from April to August, closing earlier through autumn (18:00 from 16 October) and 08:30–15:30 in winter, Tuesdays closed; last admission 20 minutes before closing; €20, reduced €10. Professional photography needs the Ephorate’s licence.
  • The chapel: in 2017 the Metropolitan of Rhodes stopped civil weddings in St Paul’s courtyard from 2018 (press reports); hotels still list it as a ceremony venue, so ask the Metropolis and the town hall what is allowed now.
  • Light: the east coast faces the sunrise — 05:50 on 15 June 2027; the village is busiest at midday.
  • Region: Rhodes & the Dodecanese.

The Peloponnese

11. Monemvasia

A walled medieval town on a rock in the sea, joined to the land by a 400 m isthmus and a bridge. The lower town’s lanes suit pedestrians and donkeys; a path climbs to the upper town, empty since Venetian times, and its Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia near the cliff edge.

  • Light: sunrise 06:09, sunset 20:48 on 15 June 2027; the stone glows in the low evening sun.
  • Region: The Peloponnese.

12. The Mani: Limeni and Kardamyli

Stone tower houses, chapels and small harbours under the Taygetus mountains, from Kardamyli and Stoupa down to Limeni and Areopoli — wild and quiet.

  • Light: the coast faces west over the Messinian Gulf — sunset 20:51 at Limeni on 15 June 2027.
  • Region: The Peloponnese.

13. Voidokilia

A round bay of sand near Pylos, between dunes and the Gialova lagoon, below Nestor’s Cave.

  • Rules: the bay lies in the Natura 2000 site of the Pylos lagoon and Sfaktiria (GR2550004), which the protected-beaches decision lists — ask whether your spot falls inside its mapped area before planning chairs or guests. The castle above is signposted closed.
  • Light: sunset 20:54 on 15 June 2027.
  • Region: The Peloponnese.

Questions couples ask

Where is the best place to elope in Greece?

It depends on the landscape: Santorini or Mykonos for whitewashed villages over the sea; Milos or Naxos for quieter islands; Cape Sounion for an ancient temple near Athens; Balos or Elafonisi for Crete’s lagoons; Porto Timoni or Myrtos for the green Ionian; Lindos, Monemvasia or the Mani for old stone. In summer, go at sunrise.

Can we legally elope in Greece?

Yes. Couples who don’t live in Greece can marry at a town hall, after a few days on the spot — a week on Santorini, two working days on Mykonos — before the mayor or a deputy and two adult witnesses. Many couples instead marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony, which has no legal effect.

Do we need a permit for wedding photos at Greek ancient sites?

For professional photography, yes: a licence from the competent Ephorate of Antiquities, issued before the shoot, with a fee set by the kind of shoot (Ministerial Decision of 2005). Amateur photos without flash are free. Sites also keep their own hours — Sounion closes at sunset, the Acropolis of Lindos at 20:00 at the latest.

Can we fly a drone at our elopement in Greece?

Only where the HCAA’s DAGR map allows it. Archaeological sites and airports are in zones where flights need the Authority’s prior permission, asked at least five days ahead, or are banned; in the open category a drone stays below 120 m and never flies over a gathering of people.

Can we have a ceremony on a beach in Greece?

A small one, often. But on the Natura 2000 beaches protected since 2024 — 251 since April 2026, Elafonisi among them — events of more than ten people, chairs, umbrellas and amplified music are banned. For a bigger ceremony, a beach club or a hotel is the usual route.

What time is sunset in Santorini?

In Oia, at 20:38 on 15 June 2027 and 19:27 on 15 September. Oia’s lanes fill for it, so many photographers prefer sunrise — 06:00 in mid-June — or the quieter rim at Imerovigli and Skaros rock.
