Getting married in the Peloponnese
Nafplio on its bay, Monemvasia on its rock in the sea, the stone towers of the Mani and Messinia’s long beaches — the south of mainland Greece, a few hours’ drive from Athens.
The Peloponnese is the great peninsula south of Athens, beyond the Corinth Canal: mountains, olive groves and a long, varied coast. Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, has lanes of Venetian and neoclassical houses under its fortress and a small castle in its bay, with Mycenae and the theatre at Epidaurus — both UNESCO World Heritage sites — close by. Further south are Monemvasia, a walled town on a rock joined to the land by a causeway; the Mani, a rugged peninsula of stone tower houses; and Messinia, olive country around Kalamata and Pylos, with sheltered bays and long sandy beaches.
Weddings here are held in an old stone church or a chapel by the sea, at a country estate among the olive trees, or at a resort hotel on the coast — with long tables outside and dinner late into a warm night.

Through the year
When to marry in the Peloponnese
May, June and September are warm and almost dry, and the sea is good for swimming from June into October. July and August are hot, inland above all, and the coast fills in August, when Greeks take their own holidays. October is still warm but the rain returns; winter is the wet season, with snow on the high mountains.

- SpringWild flowers among the olive trees and orange blossom on the plain around Nafplio; April is still showery, May settled and warm.
- SummerHot, dry, bright days, warm nights and the sea at its warmest. Plan a late ceremony and shade for the guests, and book August early.
- AutumnThe grape harvest in September, then the olive harvest from November; the sea stays warm well into October and the light turns golden.

Places
Where couples marry here
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Nafplio’s old town
Squares and lanes of Venetian and neoclassical houses, old churches and a waterfront under the fortress — a ceremony in town, then portraits by the sea.
Monemvasia
A medieval town inside its walls on a rock in the sea: stone lanes, small churches and no cars, for a small wedding and portraits with the water all around.
The Mani
Stone tower houses, chapels and small harbours under the Taygetus, from Kardamyli and Stoupa down to Limeni and Areopoli — wild settings for an elopement or a small wedding.
Estates and the Messinian coast
Olive estates and country houses inland; on the coast around Pylos and Navarino Bay, resort hotels by long sandy beaches — the whole weekend in one place.
Towns

Each with a page of its own: where couples marry there, where to take portraits, the practical side.
Light
How the light falls
The light is clear and warm over the sea and the olive groves. The coasts of Messinia and the Mani face west, so the sun sets over the water; in Nafplio it goes down behind the mountains across the gulf, and the old walls turn gold. At midsummer the sun sets just before nine. Middays are harsh, so portraits belong to the first and last hours of the day.
Travel
Getting there
Most guests fly into Athens: Nafplio is about two hours away by road, Kalamata about three on the motorway and Monemvasia nearer four. Kalamata’s airport has direct flights from some European cities in summer and is about an hour from Pylos. Distances are long and the roads wind, so choose one area for the whole wedding and arrange transport for the guests.
