Wedding photographers in Greece

Whitewashed villages on Cycladic cliffs, Athens beneath the Acropolis, the green Ionian islands, Crete, medieval Rhodes and the olive groves of the Peloponnese.

Greece is a mountainous mainland and a scatter of islands across the Aegean and Ionian seas, and its wedding season follows the dry summer: May to October almost everywhere, lasting longest in the south — Crete and Rhodes stay warm well into October — and ending soonest in the greener, wetter Ionian west.

Couples from abroad can marry here legally: at a town hall or, if one of you is Orthodox, in a Greek Orthodox church — either is binding on its own. Others sign the papers at home and celebrate here with a symbolic ceremony, on a terrace above the sea, on a beach or among the olive trees.

The seasons

What each season brings

The legal basics

Three ways to say yes

What makes a wedding legally binding in Greece, in short. Couples from abroad can marry here legally — with some paperwork first.

  • CivilThe mayor or a deputy marries you before two adult witnesses, at the town hall (the dimarchio) or in another place the town sets aside for weddings. You don’t have to live in Greece to marry this way. Since February 2024, same-sex couples can marry too, at the town hall.
  • ReligiousA Greek Orthodox wedding is legally binding on its own, as is one before a minister of another faith known in Greece. The Orthodox Church needs one of you Orthodox, both baptised Christians and the bishop’s licence — and, as a rule, a parish church, not a hotel or private chapel.
  • SymbolicAny place, any words, any celebrant — but no legal weight. Many couples sign the papers at home and celebrate here, to skip the paperwork.

Before any legal wedding

For a civil wedding, a couple who live abroad apply in person for a licence at the town hall where they will marry. Each of you brings a passport, a birth certificate, a certificate of no impediment from your own country — often its embassy or consulate in Greece — and any divorce decree, with an apostille or legalisation where required and an official Greek translation. The licence usually comes about a week later and lasts six months; if one of you is Greek or lives in Greece, the wedding is announced publicly first. Afterwards it is registered at the town’s registry office (lixiarcheio) within 40 days.

Rules and documents change, depend on your nationality and vary from town to town: always check with the town hall — or, for a church wedding, the parish — where you will marry, and with your own country’s embassy or consulate in Greece, before you set a date.
