Getting married in Santorini
White villages on the rim of a drowned volcano, blue domes over the caldera, black-sand beaches and sunsets straight into the Aegean.
Santorini, at the southern end of the Cyclades, is the rim of a volcano: a great Bronze Age eruption blew out its heart and the sea flooded in, leaving the caldera — a deep-blue bay ringed by cliffs of red, black and grey rock. Along the clifftops run Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia, white houses carved into the rock; the gentler outer slopes hold vineyards and beaches of black and red volcanic sand.
Couples come for the view: a ceremony on a terrace hanging over the caldera, in a small whitewashed chapel or among the vines, then portraits as the sun goes down into the sea. It is also a favourite place for an elopement — just the two of you and a photographer.

Through the year
When to marry in Santorini
May, June and September are warm, dry and bright, without the midsummer crowds. July and August are hot and all but rainless, but cruise ships fill Fira and Oia by day, and the meltemi, the dry north wind of the Aegean, blows most often then, strongest in the afternoon. April and October bring the odd day of rain; from November to March it rains more often and many hotels close.

- SpringWild flowers on the terraces and the hills briefly green; the villages wake up after winter, the days are mild and the evenings still cool.
- SummerHot, dry and bright, with the meltemi cooling the afternoons. The famous sunset spots are crowded, so plan the portraits around them.
- AutumnSeptember is settled and the sea still warm from summer; in October the first rain comes, the days shorten and the season winds down.

Places
Where couples marry here
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Caldera terraces
Hotel and villa terraces on the cliff edge, with a pool, a few rows of chairs and the whole caldera behind the vows.
Whitewashed chapels
Small white churches with blue domes and open bell towers, in the villages or alone on the cliffs — for a ceremony or for portraits.
Wineries
Estates on the outer slopes, where the vines grow low, coiled into baskets against the wind; some have terraces over the caldera for dinner at sunset.
Volcanic beaches and the sea
Black sand at Kamari and Perissa, the red cliffs of Red Beach, the wind-carved rock of Vlychada — and a boat on the caldera at sunset.

Light
How the light falls
The caldera villages face west, over open sea, and in late June the sun sets around twenty to nine. That hour is the island’s famous one: the lanes of Oia fill for it, while Imerovigli and Firostefani watch the same sky with fewer people. At midday the white walls throw the light back hard; for empty lanes and soft light, photographers start at sunrise.
Travel
Getting there
Santorini’s airport is under an hour’s flight from Athens, with direct flights from much of Europe in season; ferries come from Piraeus and Rafina near Athens and from the other islands. Cliff-top hotels are often reached on foot down steps and the roads are busy in summer, so arrange transfers for the guests.
