Getting married in Mykonos

A white town of lanes and chapels, windmills on the ridge, Little Venice’s balconies over the water and sandy coves along the south coast.

Mykonos is a small, dry granite island in the middle of the Cyclades. Its town, Chora, is a maze of whitewashed lanes, blue doors, bougainvillea and little churches; at its edge the old captains’ houses of Little Venice hang their wooden balconies over the sea, below a row of windmills on the ridge. Sandy beaches fill the bays of the south coast, and a short boat ride away lies Delos, the sacred island of Apollo, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Weddings here are lively: a ceremony at a hillside villa with a pool over the sea, in a whitewashed chapel or on the sand of a south-coast cove, then dinner by the water and, this being Mykonos, a party that goes on late.

Through the year

When to marry in Mykonos

May, June and September are warm, dry and bright, and the island is open but not yet, or no longer, full. July and August are hot and the busiest, and the meltemi, the dry north wind of the Aegean, blows most often then, sometimes for days — the south-coast beaches are sheltered from it. Most hotels open from late April or May until October, a mild month with the first rain; the wet months run from November to March.

  • SpringThe island opens for the season, wild flowers edge the stone walls and the hills turn green for a few weeks; mild days, cool evenings, a fresh sea.
  • SummerHot, bright days, the meltemi in the afternoons and the town busy until morning. The famous sunset spots fill up, so plan the portraits around the crowds.
  • AutumnSeptember is calmer, the sea still warm from summer; in October the days shorten, the first rain comes and the island closes for winter.

Places

Where couples marry here

The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.

  1. Villas with a view

White hillside villas with a terrace and an infinity pool over the sea — the ceremony, the dinner and the guests’ rooms in one place.

  2. Chapels

Small whitewashed churches in the town and out on the hills and headlands, for a ceremony with a few guests or for portraits.

  3. Beaches of the south coast

Sandy coves sheltered from the north wind, with places to eat on the beach — a ceremony on the sand, dinner as the light goes.

  4. Chora and Little Venice

The old town’s lanes early in the morning, the windmills and the balconies of Little Venice, for portraits before or after the day.

Light

How the light falls

Mykonos town faces west, and its sunsets are famous: from Little Venice and the windmills the sun goes down into the sea, in late June around twenty to nine. After a day of meltemi the air is swept clean and the light sharp; at midday it is hard on the white walls. Only early in the morning are the lanes of Chora empty and softly lit.

Travel

Getting there

Mykonos has its own airport, a short flight from Athens, with direct flights from much of Europe in season; ferries come from Piraeus and Rafina near Athens and from the other Cyclades, Santorini included. Distances are short, but taxis are scarce in high summer, so arrange transfers for the guests.
