In short
- Austria marries from May to September, and May is the busiest month: 7,197 of the 45,537 civil weddings in 2025, ahead of August (5,927) and September (5,715); Saturday 24 May alone had 844 (Statistik Austria).
- Summer is also the wettest season in the Alps: in Salzburg and around Hallstatt it rains on about 15 days a month from June to August, and Klagenfurt has thunderstorms on 10 days in July — while Vienna and the Wachau are dry, with 674 mm and 536 mm of rain a year (GeoSphere Austria, 1991–2020).
- September is the calmest warm month: highs of 19–21 °C, and thunderstorm days fall from 4–10 in July to 3 or fewer, with the grape harvest in the Wachau and on Vienna’s hills.
- Winter has weddings of its own: Christmas markets from November to early January, more than 450 balls a year in Vienna, peaking in January and February, and snow on 15–27 days in January in the Alpine towns.
- On 21 June 2027 the sun sets at 20:58 in Vienna and 21:14 in Innsbruck; on 21 December, at 16:02 and 16:26.
In this guide
Austria’s season follows the land. The lakes and the mountains have one summer, short and green, from late June to September; Vienna and the Wachau on the Danube have a longer one, from May into October; and the Alps have a second season in the snow. The catch is that the Alpine summer is also the wettest time of year — clouds from the north bank up against the mountains, and afternoon storms build on many days — so the right month depends on where you marry, and every outdoor plan needs a roof.
Which months do couples in Austria marry in?
Mostly late spring and late summer. In 2025, 45,537 couples married at an Austrian registry office: 7,197 in May, the busiest month, then 5,927 in August and 5,715 in September, and the single busiest day was Saturday 24 May, with 844 weddings (Statistik Austria, May 2026). Those figures count couples who live in Austria, not couples from abroad — but they marry on the same Saturdays and book the same photographers and venues, which is why many photographers are booked one to two years ahead for the popular months (Bridebook). Vienna’s registry office takes bookings for weddings at its approved places for the whole following year from the first working day of May.
What are the best months in each region?
Our region pages’ months, from the 1991–2020 normals:
| Region | Best months | Also good | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vienna | May, June, September | April, July, August, October, December | Hot days in July and August; short afternoon storms from May to August |
| Salzburg | June to September | May, October, December | Rain on about half the days from June to August; the Salzburg Festival fills hotels from 16 July to 29 August 2027 |
| Hallstatt & the Salzkammergut | June to September | January, February, May, October, December | The wettest region: 1,714 mm a year at Bad Ischl; Schnürlregen, a drizzle that can last all day; some lake hotels close in winter |
| Tyrol & Innsbruck | June to September | January to March, May, October, December | Afternoon thunderstorms in summer; many lifts and huts close in May and late autumn |
| Carinthia & Lake Wörthersee | June to September | May, October | Austria’s stormiest summers — thunder on 10.2 days in July at Klagenfurt; fog over the basin from October |
| The Wachau | May, June, September | April, July, August, October | The driest region, 536 mm a year at Krems; cold nights in October |
How warm are the days?
Average daily highs, in °C, 1991–2020 (GeoSphere Austria). The Alpine towns are a few degrees cooler than Vienna, and the mountains above them cooler still.
| Month | Vienna | Salzburg | Hallstatt area (Bad Ischl) | Innsbruck | Klagenfurt | Wachau (Krems) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| May | 21.2 | 19.3 | 19.1 | 21.7 | 21.3 | 21.2 |

How often does it rain — and thunder?
Average days with at least 1 mm of rain, 1991–2020. The north side of the Alps, where Salzburg and the Salzkammergut lie, gets the most; the Danube valley the least.
| Month | Vienna | Salzburg | Hallstatt area (Bad Ischl) | Innsbruck | Klagenfurt | Wachau (Krems) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| May | 9.4 | 14.0 | 15.2 | 11.4 | 9.9 | 9.5 |
| June | 8.4 | 15.2 | 15.5 | 13.3 | 10.3 | 9.5 |
| July | 8.9 | 15.1 | 15.8 | 13.6 | 10.6 | 9.7 |
| August | 7.9 | 13.6 | 13.6 | 13.1 | 10.6 | 8.7 |
| September | 7.4 | 11.8 | 12.6 | 9.4 | 8.0 | 6.6 |
| October | 7.2 | 10.7 | 11.8 | 8.5 | 7.7 | 6.2 |
Summer rain in the Alps often comes as thunderstorms in the afternoon. Days with thunder in July: Klagenfurt 10.2, Salzburg 8.9, Innsbruck 7.5, Vienna 6.3, Bad Ischl 5.0, Krems 4.5; in September, between 0.7 and 3.3. So a summer wedding in the mountains or by the lakes is best planned with the ceremony and portraits before the storms build, and a covered place nearby. In Salzburg the registry office never holds an outdoor wedding in bad weather — the registrar moves it inside — and Vienna approves outdoor wedding spots only with an indoor alternative close by.
Season by season
Spring: blossom in the Wachau, snow on the peaks
In the Wachau, more than 100,000 apricot trees — the Marille — blossom from the last weeks of March into the first weeks of April, for ten days to three weeks depending on the weather, starting near Krems and ending in the Spitzer Graben (donau.com). April is still cool and showery; May warms to 21 °C in Vienna and the Wachau, wild narcissi flower in the Aussee meadows, and the peaks keep their snow. May is Austria’s favourite wedding month — and in Vienna its wettest, with rain on 9.4 days.
Summer: the lakes’ season, and the storms
From late June the Wörthersee is warm enough to swim in, above 20 °C into September, and the lifts and mountain huts of Tyrol and the Dachstein open — the Krippenstein’s run until 1 November in 2026. The evenings are the longest of the year. It is also the stormiest time: plan ceremonies for the morning or late afternoon, after the storm has passed, with a roof in reach. In Salzburg the festival runs from 16 July to 29 August 2027, and hotel rooms are scarce and dear. Vienna is hot — 21.7 days of 25 °C or more in July — so shade and water matter more there than rain.
Autumn: harvest, larches and calm
September is the calm month: thunder is rare, highs sit at 19–21 °C everywhere, the lakes are still warm and the crowds have gone. The grape harvest begins in the Wachau and on Vienna’s hills, and in September the cattle come down from the high pastures decked with flowers. In October the larches turn gold in the mountains and the vineyards turn yellow; mornings often start with mist in the valleys, the föhn — the warm south wind — makes the peaks look close enough to touch, and from October fog often settles over the Klagenfurt basin. By late October many lifts and lake hotels close for the season.
Winter: Christmas markets, balls and snow
Vienna’s Christmas markets open in November — in 2026 from 6 November at Schönbrunn to 6 January, and from 13 November to 26 December on the Rathausplatz (wien.info). The ball season opens on 11 November and peaks in January and February, with more than 450 balls a year, many in the Hofburg; the Opera Ball is on 4 February 2027. In the Alps, snow lies on about 15 days in January in Salzburg, 18 in Innsbruck and Klagenfurt and 27 in Bad Aussee, and in the second half of January the Weissensee in Carinthia freezes over naturally. Days are short and cold — January highs of 2–4 °C, Klagenfurt’s lows near −6 °C — and Vienna holds no weddings at its approved places on 24 or 31 December or on public holidays. In Tyrol, cars need winter tyres.
What time does the sun set?
Sunset on the 21st of each month in 2027, local time (NOAA’s solar equations). Austria lies at the eastern end of its time zone, so the sun sets earlier than in Paris or Madrid — and earlier in Vienna than in Innsbruck.
| 21st of | Vienna | Salzburg | Innsbruck | Klagenfurt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 16:36 | 16:50 | 16:59 | 16:49 |
| February | 17:25 | 17:39 | 17:46 | 17:36 |
| March | 18:08 | 18:21 | 18:27 | 18:16 |

| May | 20:34 | 20:46 | 20:50 | 20:36 |
| June | 20:58 | 21:10 | 21:14 | 20:59 |
| July | 20:45 | 20:56 | 21:01 | 20:47 |
| August | 19:58 | 20:10 | 20:15 | 20:03 |
| September | 18:55 | 19:08 | 19:14 | 19:03 |
| October | 17:55 | 18:09 | 18:16 | 18:05 |

| December | 16:02 | 16:17 | 16:26 | 16:17 |
In the mountains these times flatter the evening: in Hallstatt, between the lake and a wall of rock, and in Tyrol’s deep valleys, the sun drops behind the ridges well before it sets, so photographers there time portraits by the mountains, not the clock. The clocks go forward on 28 March 2027 and back on 31 October. For elopements, sunrise is the empty version of the famous views: on 21 June 2027 it comes at 04:53 in Vienna and 05:18 in Innsbruck.
How do we plan the day around the light and the weather?
- In summer, in the mountains or by the lakes, put the ceremony and the portraits in the morning or after the afternoon storm, and keep a terrace, a chapel or a hall in reach.
- In Vienna and the Wachau, the evening is the easy part: dinner in a garden or a Heuriger as the sun goes down around nine.
- For a May or September Saturday, book the registry office, the venue and the photographer first — or take a Friday, which is easier to find free.
- In winter, start early: the light is gone by half past four, and snow, ice and Christmas markets want time and warm layers.
- Wherever you are, tell your photographer where the covered place is, so the plan B is a plan, not a scramble — the rain plan has the details.
