Wedding photographers in Austria

Turquoise lakes among wooded hills, a church on its peninsula and lakeside villas with their own jetties — summer weddings on some of the warmest lakes in the Alps.
Carinthia, Austria’s southernmost province, lies south of the main ridge of the Alps, and its valleys are full of lakes. The turquoise Wörthersee runs from Velden to Klagenfurt past Pörtschach and Maria Wörth, whose Gothic church stands on a peninsula. Near Villach lie the Faaker See, below the Karawanks, and the Ossiacher See; further west, the Millstätter See and the quiet Weissensee.
Weddings here are lake weddings: a ceremony on a lawn or a jetty, guests crossing to the church by boat, a swim before dinner and a long evening on a terrace as the lights come on along the shore.

See the photographerThrough the year
June to September is the lake season: the Wörthersee is warm enough to swim in from late June into September. Summer is also the wettest, stormiest time — thunderstorms build on many afternoons, most of all in July — so keep a covered terrace in the plan. May and October are mild and quieter; from October fog often lies over the Klagenfurt basin, and many lakeside hotels close for the winter.

Places
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Villas with turrets, wooden balconies and boathouses from around 1900, and hotels with lawns down to the water at Velden and Pörtschach.
Wooden jetties for a ceremony over the water, and a boat between the church, the portraits and the dinner.
Maria Wörth’s Gothic church on its peninsula, with the lake on three sides, and small village churches along the other lakes.
The tower on the Pyramidenkogel with the whole Wörthersee below, the Faaker See under the Karawanks and the Weissensee for portraits away from the towns.
Light
The Wörthersee runs from west to east, so the evening light travels the length of the lake and turns the water and the hills gold; at midsummer the sun sets around nine. Photographers plan portraits around the hour before sunset and the first hour of the morning, when the lake is still and the mist lifts.
Travel
Fly into Klagenfurt, whose airport is near the eastern end of the Wörthersee, or into Ljubljana, about an hour away; Salzburg is about two and a half hours by car, Venice about three, and Vienna three to four by train or car. From spring to autumn, boats link the towns on the Wörthersee.
