In short
- Austria’s wedding venues are palaces and palais in Vienna, palaces and a fortress in Salzburg, castles and lake hotels in the Salzkammergut and Carinthia, mountain restaurants in Tyrol, and abbeys, wine estates and Heurigen in the Wachau and on Vienna’s hills.
- Unlike in France, the legal wedding itself can happen at the venue: a Standesamt can marry you at a place it accepts as fitting (Personenstandsgesetz § 18) — Vienna’s list of 1 October 2026 names more than 160, Salzburg’s nine palaces and castles, Klagenfurt’s eight places including a boat on the Wörthersee.
- Capacities on the venues’ own pages run from 15 guests in the Sound of Music Pavilion at Hellbrunn and 40 seats in Gmunden’s lake castle to 120 at Hellbrunn’s Orangery or the Weisses Rössl and 150 in Schönbrunn’s Orangery Garden or at the Seegrube, 1,905 metres above Innsbruck.
- Outdoors, the weather decides: Salzburg never holds an outdoor civil wedding in bad weather, and Vienna approves outdoor spots only with an indoor alternative close by.
- None of these venues is a partner of Lens & Vows, and we give no prices: check availability and costs with each venue directly.
In this guide
This is a shortlist of real places, grouped by the regions of Austria. Every venue below says on its own website that it hosts weddings, or appears on a registry office’s official list of the places it marries couples at; every capacity is the venue’s own figure, as of October 2026. Where a venue gives no number, we give none. Availability, rules and costs change, so check directly with the venue — each one’s page is in the sources.
What kinds of places are there?
- Palaces and palais. Imperial and baroque palaces with gilded halls and formal gardens, in Vienna and Salzburg above all; a palais is a city palace.
- Castles and fortresses. A Schloss can be a country house or a palace; a Burg or Festung is a fortress, like Hohensalzburg above Salzburg.
- Lake castles and lake hotels. On the Traunsee, the Mondsee, the Wolfgangsee and the Wörthersee: a ceremony by the water, a boat for the portraits.
- Mountain restaurants and huts. Reached by cable car, for a free ceremony and dinner with the peaks around; a civil wedding up there needs the Standesamt’s approval.
- Heurigen and wine estates. A Heuriger is a wine tavern pouring its own wine; on Vienna’s hills and in the Wachau, a long table among the vines.
- Abbeys. Baroque monasteries — a Stift — with churches for a church wedding and halls and terraces for the Agape, the drinks after the ceremony.
How does a registry office approve a venue?
Austrian law asks the registrar to marry you “in a form and at a place that fit the meaning of marriage” (Personenstandsgesetz § 18). Normally that is the Standesamt’s own hall; a wedding elsewhere is, in the federal portal’s words, an exception that the Standesamt decides on. In practice, cities keep lists:
- Vienna approves a place at a couple’s request if it is open to the public, reachable by public transport, accessible, free of disturbance, has a lockable side room for the registrar, has no religious use, and offers an indoor alternative, level ground and shade for any outdoor spot. Its list of 1 October 2026 names more than 160 places.
- Salzburg marries couples in the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace and at nine external places; outdoors only by prior agreement, and never in bad weather.
- Innsbruck, Gmunden and Klagenfurt name their own places — below, region by region.
- Anywhere else, ask the local Standesamt early. The wedding outside its rooms carries a federal fee and the town’s own charge; getting married in Austria has the documents and the fees.
A free ceremony (freie Trauung) needs no approval at all — only the venue’s agreement — so many couples marry at the Standesamt in the morning and hold the ceremony their guests remember at the venue in the afternoon.
Where can we marry in Vienna?
Schloss Schönbrunn — the Orangery Garden
The Habsburgs’ summer palace hosts civil and free ceremonies in its Orangery Garden, among the vines, for up to 50 or up to 150 guests, with the Orangery foyer as the rain option and the Agape on the sunny terrace; church weddings take place in the palace chapel. Civil weddings follow Vienna’s slots: 16:00 and 18:00 on weekdays except Thursday, 10:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays.
For photos: the yellow façade, the formal gardens and the Gloriette above them — busy by mid-morning in summer.
The Hofburg
The imperial palace in the middle of the city rents its state halls for weddings — the Festsaal, the Zeremoniensaal, the Grosser Redoutensaal, the Forum and the Dachfoyer under the roof — and is on Vienna’s list of places for the civil ceremony. Its pages give floor areas, not guest numbers: ask for yours.
For photos: marble staircases and chandeliers inside, the Heldenplatz and the Burggarten outside.
Palais Coburg and Palais Daun-Kinsky
Palais Coburg, a hotel on the old city bastion, holds the ceremony in its garden and dinner in its historic state rooms or in the vaulted casemates below. Palais Daun-Kinsky on the Freyung, a baroque palais, hosts the civil ceremony itself in its rooms, among them the Oval Festsaal and the Yellow Salon. Neither page gives capacities.
For photos: at the Coburg, the garden and the city wall; at the Kinsky, the baroque staircase and the old town outside.
The Belvedere, the Giant Ferris Wheel and the Heurigen
Vienna’s list also includes Schloss Belvedere, the Hermesvilla in the Lainzer Tiergarten, the Palm House in the Burggarten, the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater — turning since 1897, its cabins for hire — a Danube boat and a historic tram, and wine estates and Heurigen such as Mayer am Pfarrplatz, Weingut Wien Cobenzl, Schübel-Auer and Fuhrgassl-Huber, on the hills of the 19th district. Region: Vienna.
Where can we marry in Salzburg?
The Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace
Salzburg’s own wedding hall, in the palace across the Salzach from the old town: weddings on Tuesday and Friday mornings and Saturdays from 9:00 to 14:00, booked online. No rice, petals or confetti inside.
For photos: the Mirabell Gardens outside, with the fortress on its rock behind.
Schloss Leopoldskron
An 18th-century palace on its lake at the edge of the city, on the registry office’s list. The ceremony is in the Max Reinhardt Library or on the terrace over the lake and the Alps; the evening is in the Marble Hall, where Mozart is said to have played; couples can take the whole palace for the day. No capacities on its page.
For photos: the lake terrace, and the palace reflected in the water from the far shore.
Hellbrunn Palace
The prince-archbishops’ pleasure palace south of the city, with trick fountains and a mannerist park. Ceremonies are held in the park with an indoor fallback, in the Makart Room (up to 50), the Orangery (up to 120) or the palace rooms (up to 120); the Sound of Music Pavilion takes up to 15, and the palace chapel up to 60 for a church or free ceremony.
For photos: the pavilion and the long avenues of the park.
Schloss Mönchstein, Hohensalzburg and the others
Schloss Mönchstein, a hotel of 24 rooms on the Mönchsberg high above the old town, holds civil ceremonies in its park in fine weather, small ceremonies in its chapel (no church weddings) and winter weddings in the Mönchstein-Saal. The registry office’s list adds Hohensalzburg Fortress, Schloss Fuschl, Schloss Frohnburg, the Kavalierhaus at Klessheim and Palais Neustein. Region: Salzburg.
Where can we marry in the Salzkammergut?
- Seeschloss Ort, Gmunden. The castle on its island in the Traunsee is Gmunden’s registry office: the wedding hall seats 40, the ceremony takes about 20 minutes, and boats can be hired for a wedding on the lake.
- Schloss Mondsee. The registry office is inside the castle, with chandeliers and panelling; the Basilica of St Michael — where the wedding in The Sound of Music was filmed — stands next door, the aperitif is in the castle garden, and the hotel has 65 rooms.
- Hotel Im Weissen Rössl, St. Wolfgang. The inn of the operetta, on the shore of the Wolfgangsee, for celebrations of up to 120 in the Scheffelsaal, the Benatzky Stüberl and on the Sissi terrace.
- The Heilbronn chapel on the Krippenstein, at about 2,000 metres above Lake Hallstatt, listed by the region for mountain ceremonies.
For photos: boathouses and still water in the morning; in Hallstatt & the Salzkammergut the mountains take the evening sun early.
Where can we marry in Tyrol?
- Innsbruck’s registry office marries couples in its hall in the Golden Roof building in the old town, and larger weddings at the Congresspark Igls or the Villa Blanka, where ceremony and celebration share a roof.
- The Seegrube, 1,905 metres up the Nordkette. “Innsbruck’s highest wedding location”: up to 150 guests in the main hall and the fireside room, the reception on the terrace over the city’s lights in fine weather, the restaurant yours alone from 18:00; free ceremonies on the Hafelekar, at 2,334 metres.
For photos: the pink light on the limestone at sunset, and the city below — region: Tyrol & Innsbruck.
Where can we marry in Carinthia?
- Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden. A palace hotel on the Wörthersee where, with the authorities’ permission, the civil wedding can take place in the hotel; for a church wedding, the hotel suggests the church of Maria Wörth and a boat across the lake.
- Klagenfurt’s registry office marries couples in two wedding halls and at eight other places: a boat of the Wörthersee fleet, Schloss Maria Loretto, the Seepark Wörthersee Resort, Stift Viktring, Schloss Hallegg, Schloss Mageregg, the Karnburg wine estate and the Hotel Sandwirth.
For photos: Maria Wörth’s church on its peninsula, and the evening light down the length of the lake — region: Carinthia & Lake Wörthersee.
Where can we marry in the Wachau?
- Stift Göttweig. The Benedictine abbey on its hill above the Danube holds church weddings in its abbey church, the Agape in the Benediktihalle, the summer refectory or on the upper terrace facing the Danube valley, and the celebration in the Brunnensaal.
- Domäne Wachau, Dürnstein. The wine estate’s baroque Kellerschlössel seats 50 in its festival hall, up to 78 with the side rooms, and serves the aperitif on its summer terrace.
For photos: terraced vineyards and the blue tower of Dürnstein’s abbey; the upper slopes keep the last sun — region: the Wachau.
Questions couples ask
Can we have the civil wedding at our venue in Austria?
Often, yes. A Standesamt can marry you at a place it accepts as fitting the meaning of marriage (Personenstandsgesetz § 18). Vienna’s list of approved places names more than 160, Salzburg’s registry office marries couples at nine palaces and castles besides the Marble Hall, and Klagenfurt at eight places including a Wörthersee boat. Elsewhere, ask the local Standesamt.
Can we get married at Schönbrunn Palace?
Yes. Schönbrunn hosts civil and free ceremonies in its Orangery Garden for up to 150 guests, with the Orangery foyer for rain, and church weddings in the palace chapel. Civil weddings follow Vienna’s slots: 16:00 and 18:00 on weekdays except Thursday, and 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00 on Saturdays.
Where can we get married in Salzburg?
In the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace, the city’s wedding hall, or at one of nine external places on the registry office’s list: Schloss Frohnburg, Schloss Fuschl, Hellbrunn Palace and its Sound of Music Pavilion, Schloss Leopoldskron, Schloss Mönchstein, Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Kavalierhaus at Klessheim and Palais Neustein.
Can we marry on a mountain in Austria?
For a free ceremony, yes, wherever the owner agrees — the Seegrube above Innsbruck, at 1,905 metres, hosts up to 150 guests, and the Hafelekar free ceremonies. A civil wedding on a mountain needs the local Standesamt to accept the place, so many couples sign the papers in the valley first.
What happens to an outdoor wedding if it rains?
It moves inside. Salzburg’s registry office never holds an outdoor wedding in bad weather, and Vienna approves outdoor spots only with an indoor alternative nearby; Schönbrunn’s Orangery Garden falls back to its foyer, Hellbrunn’s park to the Orangery or the palace rooms.
