Baroque domes and spires on the Salzach, a fortress on the cliff above and palaces at the city’s edge, with the mountains just beyond.
Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace, was ruled for centuries by prince-archbishops, who rebuilt much of it in baroque: the old town on the Salzach — a UNESCO World Heritage site — the white fortress of Hohensalzburg on the cliff above, and the Mirabell Gardens across the river. Palaces stand on lakes and in parks at the city’s edge, and the Untersberg rises behind them.
Couples marry in its baroque halls and churches, take their portraits in the gardens and on the hills above the old town, and dine in an old inn, a palace or a lakeside hotel just outside. Some marry in Tracht, the local dress — a dirndl, a loden jacket — and the Mirabell Gardens were a setting for The Sound of Music.

See the photographerThrough the year
June to September brings the warmest, longest days. It is also the wettest season: clouds from the north bank up against the mountains, and it rains about every other day — storms in the afternoon, or Schnürlregen, a fine drizzle that can last all day. September is calmer. The Salzburg Festival fills the hotels in late July and August; December brings the Advent markets and, some years, snow.

Places
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Marble, stucco and painted ceilings in the old town and the palaces at its edge — for the civil ceremony or the dinner.
Baroque churches in the old town, and small chapels on the hills and in the villages around.
The Mirabell Gardens, the palace parks and the banks of the Salzach, for portraits with the fortress behind.
Lakeside hotels and country inns a short drive away, the first lakes of the Salzkammergut half an hour out, and the Untersberg or the Gaisberg for a view over the city.
Towns
Each with a page of its own: where couples marry there, where to take portraits, the practical side.
Light
Pale façades and green copper domes turn warm in the evening sun below the fortress on its rock. The classic views look across the Salzach from its banks, and down from the Mönchsberg and the Kapuzinerberg, the hills that frame the old town. After rain the mountains stand out sharp. At midsummer the sun sets around ten past nine; in December, at about a quarter past four.
Travel
Salzburg’s airport is a short drive from the old town, and Munich’s about two hours away by road; trains from Vienna take about two and a half hours. The old town is best on foot; for palaces, inns and lakes outside it, plan cars or a coach for the guests.
