A lakeside town at the foot of the Schmittenhöhe, where couples marry in a 16th-century castle that is now the town hall, with the Kitzsteinhorn’s glacier a short drive away.
Zell is first recorded in 788 or 790, as “Cella in Bisontio”, and became a town only in 1928; it was the railway, opened in 1875, that made it one of Austria’s best-known resorts. In the middle of town stands Schloss Rosenberg, built from 1577 by the mining brothers Karl and Hans Rosenberger; it has housed an inn, a forestry office and, until 1908, the district court, and the town bought it in 1970 to make it the Rathaus. The lake beside it is about 3.8 km long and up to 70 m deep, a walk of about 11 km around, and in summer the tourist board puts its water mostly between 20 and 24 °C. Above the town rises the Schmittenhöhe, whose cable car, opened in 1927, was the first in the province of Salzburg.
The Standesamt marries couples in the wedding room on the castle’s first floor, and the walled rose garden on its south side is made for the first photographs. From there the day can go up or out: onto the lake on one of the Schmittenhöhebahn’s boats, up to the Elisabethkapelle at almost 2,000 m, or over to Kaprun, whose medieval castle is hired out for weddings — with the glaciers of the Hohe Tauern on the horizon.
Photographers
They shoot everywhere in Salzburg — in Zell am See too. Their whole weddings are on their pages.

The Standesamt’s wedding room is on the first floor of the castle, which the tourist board calls the place where many of the town’s marriages are made; it also hosts receptions. The town hall is open on weekday mornings and on Monday and Wednesday afternoons; the town paper reported a Saturday wedding there in September 2025, so ask the registrars which days and hours they can offer.
The Schmittenhöhebahn, which runs the lake boats, hires out the MS Schmittenhöhe or one of three charter boats, among them the vintage Libelle, for up to 85 guests, more on request; charters must be requested in writing at least a week ahead. The tourist board says a ceremony on board is possible: agree it with the Standesamt first, or hold a free ceremony on the water after the legal one.
A small chapel at the summit, built in 1904–05 by a local hotel family in memory of Empress Elisabeth, who had come up the mountain in 1885 and was killed in Geneva in 1898; it is dedicated to St Elizabeth of Thuringia. The tourist board calls it an exclusive place for a ceremony; it is open while the cable car runs, except in winter.
The parish church in the middle of town is a three-aisled basilica of the 12th and 13th centuries over the remains of a 10th-century crypt, with a massive 36 m tower from about 1450. Zell belongs to the Archdiocese of Salzburg: contact the parish at least six months ahead; at least one of you must be Catholic, a marriage-preparation seminar is required and your home parish issues the permission to marry here. The Protestant Auferstehungskirche dates from 1958.
In Kaprun, the next village to the south-west, the castle — first recorded in 1280, with a Romanesque east tower, cared for by a local association since 1984 — is hired out exclusively for weddings: up to 350 guests inside and 450 in the courtyard. Kaprun has its own Standesamt; ask it about a civil ceremony at the castle.

Portraits
The rose garden on the castle’s south side, walled off from the street, then the pedestrian zone — car-free since 1973 — with the parish church and the medieval Vogtturm a few steps away. Quietest early in the morning.
The town lies on the west shore, at the foot of the Schmittenhöhe, so it loses the evening sun early; Thumersbach, on the east shore and a short boat ride away, keeps it a little longer and looks back across the water at the town and the mountain. On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at about 21:07 on a flat horizon, golden hour running from 20:21 to 21:32; on 15 September at 19:22 — behind the Schmittenhöhe, well before that.
At the top, nearly 2,000 m up, the tourist board counts more than thirty peaks over 3,000 m in view, with the lake below. In 2026 the cable car ran in summer from 18 May to 4 October, 9:00 to 17:00, then until 1 November to 16:00 — so plan the portraits up here for the afternoon, not the sunset. Bring a layer: at the summit station, July and August average highs are about 15 °C.
Turquoise reservoirs high in the Hohe Tauern above Kaprun, reached only by transfer bus and the Lärchwand inclined lift — no private cars or bikes. In 2026 they were open daily from 22 May to 11 October; they reopen at the end of May 2027.
Through the year
Summer is the season and also the wettest time. GeoSphere Austria’s data for the Zell am See station, averaged over 1991–2020, give average highs of 22.5 °C in June, 24.1 °C in July, 23.9 °C in August and 19.0 °C in September, with 150 to 160 mm of rain a month from June to August, on about 15 days each, and thunder on about five days in July; September is drier, at 109 mm on 11 days. In winter there is snow on the ground on most days from December to February, and the lake sometimes freezes. The town counted 1.65 million overnight stays in 2024, the busiest months being February, August and July, the quietest November. Dates that fill it in 2027: the lake festivals on 17 July and 7 August and IRONMAN 70.3 Zell am See-Kaprun on 29 August.
Salzburg, month by month
Practical
Salzburg airport is about 80 km away, about an hour and a half by car; Munich about two and a half hours. Direct trains from Salzburg’s main station take about 1 h 35 to 1 h 45, those from Innsbruck two hours or more, and bus 260 runs from Salzburg airport. Austrian motorways need a vignette; guests staying overnight can use public transport across the province with the Guest Mobility Ticket.
The short-stay zones are paid on weekdays from 8:00 to 18:00 and on Saturday mornings, for up to three hours; for a whole day, use the Rathaus and Congress garage or the Parkhaus Zentrum. From 15 June to 15 September, barriers close streets in the lower town from 16:00 to 06:00: tell drivers and caterers.
Combustion engines are banned on the Zeller See, inboard and outboard, and protected zones along the shore are closed to boats from 15 June to 30 August. For photos on the water, use the lake boats, an electric boat or a rowing boat.
Austro Control’s rules apply: registration for any drone with a camera, insurance, at most 120 m above ground and no flights over crowds. Around the airfield south of town a flight needs a permit while it operates, and the hospital helipad’s zone, active all day, covers Thumersbach. In the Hohe Tauern National Park, beside the Grossglockner road and above the reservoirs, drones are banned.
Any Standesamt in Austria can marry you, wherever you live: it first checks your documents with you both in person, at most six months before the wedding. A church wedding alone has no legal effect.
Questions
In the wedding room on the first floor of Schloss Rosenberg, the 16th-century castle that is now the Rathaus. For anywhere else — a boat, the mountain — the tourist board’s advice is to agree it with the Standesamt first.
The lake boats take weddings of up to 85 guests, and the tourist board offers the Elisabethkapelle at the summit as a place for a ceremony. Whether the legal ceremony can be held there is the Standesamt’s decision; otherwise, marry at the castle and hold a free ceremony afterwards.
Not with the cable car: in summer 2026 it ran until 17:00, while the sun set after 20:00. Plan afternoon portraits at the top and sunset by the lake — from the east shore, which keeps the light longest.
In season, yes: the High Alpine Road, opened in 1935, runs 48 km over 36 hairpin bends; in 2026 it opened on 25 April and closes in early November, and it is a toll road. The 2027 dates are not published yet, and drones are banned in the national park beside it.
In summer, usually: the tourist board puts the water mostly between 20 and 24 °C. Early in the season it is colder, and in some winters the lake freezes.
