Wedding photographers in Italy

Stone hill towns, olive groves, vineyards and a wide lake in Italy’s green heart, next door to Tuscany.
Umbria, between Tuscany, Lazio and the Marche, is known as Italy’s green heart: wooded hills, olive groves and vineyards, wide valleys and stone towns on the hilltops. Perugia, the capital, looks out over the Tiber valley; Assisi, the town of Saint Francis, is a UNESCO World Heritage site; Orvieto stands on a cliff of volcanic rock; and near Terni the Cascata delle Marmore falls through the woods.
Weddings here look much like Tuscany’s, only quieter: a castle, a restored hilltop hamlet — a borgo — or an agriturismo, a farm with rooms among olive trees and vines, and dinner at a long table outside as the valley turns gold.

Through the year
May, June and September are the classic months: warm days and cool evenings in the hills. July and August are hot and mostly dry, so ceremonies move to the end of the day. Rain returns in September and peaks in November, though October is still mild by day; winters are cold, with fog in the valleys.

Places
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Medieval castles and restored hamlets on the hills, many of them country hotels today: guests, ceremony and dinner on one hilltop.
Country villas and farms with rooms among olive groves and vineyards, Montefalco’s among them: a ceremony on the lawn, dinner outside.
Perugia, Assisi, Spello, Todi, Orvieto: a ceremony in a Romanesque church or the old town hall, then portraits in lanes of stone.
Olive groves and pines down to the water, small harbours, islands reached by ferry and sunsets over the lake.
Light
Autumn and winter mornings often begin with mist in the valleys and the hill towns rising above it. Assisi and Spello are built of the pale pink stone of Monte Subasio, which glows at the end of the day, and on Lake Trasimeno the sun sets over the water. Summer middays are hazy — portraits wait for the evening.
Travel
Perugia has a small airport; most guests fly into Rome or Florence, about two hours away by car, and Orvieto lies on the railway between the two. Beyond the towns, plan on a car — or a driver for the guests.
