Todi’s stone houses stacked on the hillside in low golden light, cypresses below and the wide valley fading into the distance

Wedding photographers in Todi

A small hill town above the Tiber valley that counts its weddings by the dozen, most of them for couples from somewhere else.

Todi, about 15,000 people at 400 metres, is built around one of Italy’s great medieval squares: Piazza del Popolo, closed by the Palazzo del Popolo (1214–1228), the Palazzo del Capitano, the Palazzo dei Priori (1334–1347) and the cathedral. At the top of the town the Parco della Rocca reaches 411 metres, and outside the walls, alone on the road below, stands Santa Maria della Consolazione, the Renaissance temple with a dome about 50 metres high that you see from the Orvieto road long before you arrive.

The town takes weddings seriously. In November 2022 the councillor for civil registries expected 80 by the end of that year, up from 61 the year before; 43 of those couples came from elsewhere in Italy, and three from abroad. About half the weddings were civil, in the town’s old rooms or in the villas and hamlets around it that serve as branch registry offices, so the day often goes from a palazzo on the square to a long table in the hills.

Ceremonies

Where couples marry in Todi

  1. The comune’s rooms and terrace

As named by the councillor in 2022: the frescoed room of the Museo-Pinacoteca, in the Palazzo del Capitano on the square, the Sala del Consiglio Comunale, the Sala della Giunta, the Ridotto of the theatre and the Terrazzo delle Lucrezie. The comune publishes neither its current list nor its fees: ask the office which are open, and what each costs, before you plan around one.

  2. Villas and hamlets with a registry office

The same 2022 list names six places with an agreement as separate civil-registry offices: Relais Todini, Roccafiore, Villa del Broglino, Borgo Petroro, Il Bramante and the Eremo di Santa Barbara. That means a legal ceremony and the dinner in one place; check with the venue that its agreement still stands.

  3. A church wedding

About half of Todi’s weddings in 2022 were religious, and many were for couples from elsewhere. Neither the parish nor the diocese of Orvieto-Todi publishes rules on the cathedral or on Santa Maria della Consolazione: ask the parish early, and through your own parish priest, what the paperwork will need.

When to marry in Todi

Todi has no published normals of its own, and it stands higher than both of its nearest stations. At Perugia’s airport, 205 m in the valley (Aeronautica Militare 1971–2000), average highs are 22.1 °C in May, 26.1 °C in June, 30.0 °C in July and August and 25.5 °C in September, with five to eight rainy days a month. Orvieto, 35 km west (ENEA 1961–1990), has highs of 23.3 °C in May, 27.0 °C in September and 31.9 °C in August. Evenings on the hill are cooler, so keep wraps for guests.

Practical

Good to know before the day

  • Getting there

Todi is reached by road: about 42 km from Perugia and from Terni, 35 km from Orvieto and 45 km from Spoleto. Most guests fly into Rome or Florence, about two hours away by car from Umbria’s towns, and a car or a booked driver for the evening is the plan that works.

  • Banns and paperwork

The comune’s online banns procedure is for couples with one resident in Todi, costs one or two €16 stamps and takes up to 30 days. Couples from elsewhere usually start with their own comune or, if they live abroad, with the consulate: ask the office how yours begins. Foreign partners need a nulla osta, legalised unless exempt, and a sworn interpreter if they don’t speak Italian, whose ID goes to the office in advance.

  • Who to ask

The comune’s switchboard is 075 89561, and it books appointments online. Since it doesn’t publish its wedding fees or its current list of rooms, get both in writing before you set a date; the private venues have their own contract as well.

  • Drones

Anywhere in Italy a drone may not fly over a gathering of people, and the operator must check the D-Flight map before every flight: with the square full of guests, that rules out the classic shot.

Questions

Questions about marrying in Todi

Can foreign couples marry in Todi?

Yes, but few do: three of the 80 weddings expected for 2022. A foreign partner needs a nulla osta from their consulate, and an interpreter if they don’t speak Italian. Our guide to getting married in Italy sets out the steps.

Can we marry on a terrace in Todi?

The Terrazzo delle Lucrezie was on the comune’s list in 2022. Ask the comune whether it is still offered, what it costs, and which room it uses if it rains.

Is a civil ceremony at a villa near Todi legal?

Where the villa has an agreement as a separate civil-registry office, yes: the comune’s officer marries you there. Six such places were named in 2022; ask each one to confirm.

When is the best time to marry in Todi?

May, June and September suit the hills, with highs in the 20s at the nearest stations. In July and August they reach 30 °C or more, so plan a late ceremony and shade. Around 8 September the town has its feast at Santa Maria della Consolazione.
