Cliff-top towns, white-sand coves and castles by the sea at the toe of Italy, with Sicily across the strait.
Calabria is the toe of Italy’s boot: a long, mountainous land between the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian, with Sicily across the Strait of Messina. On the Costa degli Dei, the west coast, Tropea stands on its cliff above white beaches and small coves reached on foot or by boat; the Ionian side has long beaches and castles by the sea, and inland lies the Sila, a plateau of pine forests and lakes.
Weddings gather around the sea: a ceremony in an old church in town, then a long dinner on a terrace above the water at sunset — or a country house among olive and citrus groves.

May, June and September are warm and bright, with the sea good for swimming from June. July and August are hot and almost rainless, and the coast fills with Italians on holiday in August. October is still mild but wetter; many seaside hotels open only from spring to autumn.

Places
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Tropea, Pizzo and Scilla: churches and piazzas high above the sea, and terraces for dinner at sunset.
White sand and clear water below the cliffs of Capo Vaticano, for portraits or a boat trip the day after.
Le Castella on the Ionian, Pizzo and Scilla on the Tyrrhenian — old fortresses for portraits in the evening light.
Farmhouses among olive and citrus groves, and for a cooler summer, lakes and pine forests up on the Sila.
Light
The Tyrrhenian coast faces west, so the sun sets into the sea, with the Aeolian Islands on the horizon off Tropea and Capo Vaticano; the Ionian coast faces east, for sunrise. White sand and a bright sea make midsummer middays hard — portraits belong to the last hours, when the cliffs and old stone turn gold.
Travel
Fly into Lamezia Terme, about an hour by car from Tropea, or Reggio Calabria for Scilla and the south. The region is long and mountainous, so a car is all but essential, and it is best to keep the whole wedding on one coast.
