Pastel harbour villages, villas above the sea and vineyards terraced into the cliffs — the Italian Riviera.
Liguria is the narrow arc of coast between France and Tuscany, with Genoa at its centre and mountains rising straight out of the sea. To the east lie Portofino, harbour villages such as Camogli, and the Cinque Terre, whose villages and terraced vineyards are a UNESCO World Heritage site together with Portovenere. To the west are longer beaches and old resorts such as Sanremo.
Weddings here face the sea: a villa garden or a terrace above the water, a small church by the harbour, dinner as the lights come on around the bay. In Genoa, the palazzi of the Strade Nuove — another UNESCO site — suit a city wedding.

Photographers
They shoot here and know the light. Their whole weddings are on their pages.
See the photographerThrough the year
May, June and September are the best months: warm days, with the sea warm enough to swim from June. July is the driest month, but July and August are crowded, above all around mid-August. From September, autumn rain comes in short, heavy storms; October is the wettest month, though still mild.

Places
The kinds of places — ask your photographer which ones they know well.
Old villas on the promontories, with palms, citrus trees and terraces over the water: the whole day in one place.
Tall pastel houses round a small harbour, a church by the water, an aperitivo on the quay.
Villages stacked on the rocks above the vineyards, and a stone church on the point at Portovenere — for an elopement or a small wedding.
Palazzi with frescoed halls in the old centre, and Boccadasse, a fishing harbour within the city, for portraits by the sea.
Towns
Each with a page of its own: where couples marry there, where to take portraits, the practical side.
Light
The coast faces south, and the light comes off the sea all day — glaring at midday, soft and warm at either end. Camogli and the Cinque Terre look west and south-west, so their coloured houses glow in the last sun, while in the deeper coves the mountains bring the evening shade early.
Travel
Fly into Genoa, about an hour by car from Portofino; Pisa is closer to the Cinque Terre, and Nice to Sanremo. The Cinque Terre are best reached by train or boat, and Portofino lies at the end of a single narrow road — plan how the guests will get around.
