Wedding photographers in Orvieto

A town on a cliff of volcanic rock, a Gothic cathedral on top and a railway at the bottom, an hour or so from Rome.

Orvieto, about 19,000 people across the comune, sits on a table of tufa that rises out of the plain to 325 metres.

Its Duomo, begun in 1290, stands in striped bands of white travertine and dark basalt, with the façade Lorenzo Maitani reshaped from 1309 and Luca Signorelli’s Last Judgment inside, painted between 1499 and 1504. Under the streets run more than 2,500 years of caves, cisterns and quarries, and beside the funicular a 16th-century well drops 62 metres on two separate spiral stairs.

It lies on the railway between Rome and Florence, so guests can come by train and ride a funicular to the wedding. The old town is small and best on foot: the day runs across the rock from a ceremony in a palazzo or a cloister to the cathedral square and the western edge at sunset, with dinner on the rock or in the countryside below.

Where couples marry in Orvieto

  1. The comune’s historic venues

In 2011 the Giunta added the Sala dei Quattrocento of the Palazzo del Popolo, a frescoed hall used for congresses today, and the Cloister of San Francesco, in the town library, to the Ridotto of the Teatro Mancinelli and the Parco delle Grotte, in use since 2007. The comune pages we could open don’t repeat that list or give fees: write to statocivile@comune.orvieto.tr.it to ask what is on offer now and what it costs.

  2. The comune’s own rooms

The same 2011 decision lists the registry office and the rooms of the Sindaco, the Governatore and the Consiglio, free to residents in office hours; other couples, and residents at other times, pay a flat fee. The office is at Via Roma 3, and sees people by appointment only.

  3. A wedding in the Duomo

The Opera del Duomo publishes no rule on weddings, and the diocese of Orvieto-Todi publishes only the forms for the marriage file. To ask, start with the parish, and with the Opera on +39 0763 342477 or info@duomodiorvieto.it: it is a monument with paying visitors, so don’t assume a date before you have a yes.

Through the year

When to marry in Orvieto

Orvieto’s own station (ENEA 1961–1990; it publishes no rain figures) gives average highs of 23.3 °C in May, 28.1 °C in June, 31.2 °C in July, 31.9 °C in August, 27.0 °C in September and 20.7 °C in October. For rain, Perugia’s airport station some 50 km away (1971–2000) has about seven to eight rainy days a month in May, June, September and October. Corpus Domini on 30 May 2027 closes the Duomo to visitors all day, with its parade of about 400 people in costume through the streets, a spectacle but a poor day for a wedding near the square.

Practical

Good to know before the day

  • Getting there by train

Orvieto’s station, at the foot of the rock, is on the Florence–Rome line, with regional and most Intercity trains: about an hour to Rome by Intercity and an hour and a half by regional train. By road, the A1 motorway’s exit is about 80 km from the Rome Nord junction and 150 km from Firenze Sud.

  • The funicular

Its lower station faces the railway station; the car rises 157 metres in about two minutes to Piazza Cahen, near the Pozzo di San Patrizio, usually every 10 to 15 minutes, and holds 75 people. Guests can leave their cars in the station’s car park. Ask Busitalia for the last run on your date if the party goes on late.

  • Cars and deliveries

We could not read the comune’s current rules for driving on the rock, so ask the venue and the comune how the couple’s car, flowers and caterers get in and when, and whether a permit is needed, well before the day. Via Roma 3 takes questions on 0763 306713 or 0763 306222, Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 12:00.

  • Drones

Anywhere in Italy a drone may not fly over a gathering of people, and the operator must check the D-Flight map before every flight. The Duomo’s permit doesn’t mention drones, so ask the Opera before planning one near the cathedral.

Questions

Questions about marrying in Orvieto

Can we marry in Orvieto’s Duomo?

Nothing published says yes or no. Ask the parish and the Opera del Duomo, and note that 30 May 2027 (Corpus Domini) is out. Your legal civil step and any foreign paperwork are separate: our guide to getting married in Italy sets them out.

Where can we have a civil wedding in Orvieto?

The 2011 list names the Sala dei Quattrocento, the Cloister of San Francesco, the Ridotto of the Teatro Mancinelli and the Parco delle Grotte, alongside the comune’s own rooms. It is old, and it gives no amounts: ask the civil-registry office by email for the current list and the fees.

Can guests come from Rome by train?

Yes: about an hour by Intercity or an hour and a half by regional train, then the funicular up from opposite the station. Check the last trains and the funicular’s last run before planning a late dinner.

Where is the best sunset in Orvieto?

The rock’s western edge near San Giovenale, over the Paglia valley: at 20:51 on 15 June 2027, and at 19:22 on 15 September. Plan to be there with the photographer about 40 minutes earlier.
