Taormina
Taormina sits 200 metres above the Ionian Sea, with a Greek theatre, an island in the bay below and Etna on the horizon.
Taormina is a small town about 200 metres above the sea, between Messina and Catania. Its old town, mostly closed to cars, runs along Corso Umberto and the stairways that link it to the side streets. On a natural terrace, its theatre — laid out by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC and rebuilt by the Romans, the largest of Greek origin in Sicily after Syracuse’s — looks over the sea and the Calabrian coast to Mount Etna. Below, a cable car runs down to Mazzarò and the bay of Isola Bella, a nature reserve since 1998.
Etna sets the mood of a Taormina wedding. On a clear day it fills the horizon; on others it smokes, and in summer 2026 its ash closed Catania’s airport more than once. A wedding here is a town wedding — a Gothic palazzo, a church, a hotel terrace over the bay — with the volcano as the one guest you can neither seat nor schedule.

Ceremonies
Where couples marry in Taormina
Palazzo dei Duchi di Santo Stefano
A Gothic palace of the late 14th and early 15th centuries, built into the town walls and owned by the comune since 1964; Taormina’s tourism portal lists it for civil weddings, and in summer its garden hosts cultural events. Ask the comune’s marriage office which rooms and days it offers.
The Duomo
Taormina’s cathedral, dedicated to San Nicolò di Bari, is medieval. For a church wedding, speak to the parish early and start the Church’s papers in your home parish.
Hotel terraces over the bay
Receptions are held on hotel terraces above the bay. Ask whether a terrace can take the ceremony too, and what happens if the wind gets up.
Not the Greek theatre
The Teatro Antico is for photographs: what the archaeological park offers couples is a permit for wedding photos and handheld video, and we found none for a ceremony. Marry elsewhere and come to the theatre for portraits.

Portraits
Where to take your portraits
The Teatro Antico
The cavea, the stage and Etna beyond. With the park’s permit, the two of you, your photographer and one assistant enter free, supervised by the park’s staff, until half an hour before the ticket office closes.
Isola Bella
The little island in the bay, reached by a stairway down from the road at Mazzarò, or by the cable car from the old town. The same park permit covers it; otherwise entry is ticketed.
Corso Umberto and its stairways
The main street and the stairs that leave it: shade, old stone and doorways. Go early, before the street fills.
The Villa Comunale gardens
The park Florence Trevelyan created at the end of the 19th century, now the town’s public gardens: a green change from stone for your portraits.
Through the year
When to marry in Taormina
For the weather we use Messina’s official station, up the same coast (Aeronautica Militare, 1971–2000). Average highs are 22.5 °C in May, 27.5 °C in September and 30.5 °C in August; June is the driest month, with 12.7 mm on 2 days, while October brings 113.7 mm on 9. Summer evenings at the theatre belong to Taormina Arte, whose home it has been since 1983 — if you want the theatre for photos that week, check the programme.

Flying in
Catania’s is the nearest airport, and Etna’s ash can close it: on 12 August 2026 it suspended all flights until 18:00, with planes diverted to Palermo, Trapani and Comiso. Arrive a day early and keep a back-up plan for the people the day can’t start without.
In town
The old town is mostly pedestrian. Guests park at the Lumbi or Porta Catania garages, with free shuttles to the centre about every 15 minutes; the cable car links the town with Mazzarò by the sea.
The park’s permit
Apply to the Parco archeologico Naxos Taormina with its form for couples; each site — the Teatro Antico, Isola Bella, Naxos — is paid for separately, for personal use only. The park advises against heels on its paths.
Drones
The park’s form excludes drones, and its visitor rules ban them without authorisation. Elsewhere, under EU rules, a drone must keep a safe distance from people and never fly over a gathering — your guests included.
The legal route
Each of you brings a nulla osta and you sign a declaration at the comune before the wedding; a church wedding adds the Church’s own file. Our guide to getting married in Italy explains the steps.
Questions
Questions about marrying in Taormina
Can we get married in Taormina’s Greek theatre?
We found no permit for a ceremony there. What the archaeological park offers couples is a permit for wedding photos and handheld video, for personal use and supervised by its staff. Marry in town and come to the theatre for portraits.
Do we need a permit for wedding photos at the Teatro Antico?
Yes. Professional and commercial shoots need the park’s authorisation, and couples apply with the park’s own form, which also covers Isola Bella and Naxos. Ordinary visitors may not enter in ceremonial dress.
What if Etna erupts around our wedding?
The main risk is to flights. Ash closed Catania’s airport on 12 August 2026 and on other days that summer, with flights diverted to Palermo, Trapani and Comiso. Arrive early, and agree a travel plan B with your photographer and planner.
Where are civil weddings held in Taormina?
Taormina’s tourism portal lists Palazzo dei Duchi di Santo Stefano, a Gothic palace in the old town owned by the comune, for civil weddings. Confirm the room, the days and the documents with the comune’s marriage office, and bring each one’s nulla osta.
Can we fly a drone in Taormina?
Not at the theatre or on Isola Bella: the park’s permit excludes drones. Elsewhere it has to be flown under EU rules, which forbid flying over gatherings of people — so never over your guests.
