Noto
Noto was rebuilt all at once after 1693, in a soft stone that turns the colour of honey in the sun: a whole baroque town for your wedding.
When the earthquake of 1693 razed the old town, Noto was rebuilt on a new site; the ruins of Noto Antica lie about 8 km to the north. The new town rose in the late baroque style, with churches, palazzi and stairways, and in 2002 UNESCO listed it with the other late baroque towns of the Val di Noto. It is built in a soft local stone that takes on a honey tone in sunlight.
The centre is compact, which makes for an easy wedding day: the town hall, the cathedral and the street of balconies are a short walk apart. The cathedral, at the top of its great staircase, lost its dome in a collapse on 13 March 1996 and reopened for worship on 18 June 2007. Dinner can be in town, or out among the farms and country houses of the countryside.

Ceremonies
Where couples marry in Noto
Palazzo Ducezio
Noto’s town hall, completed around 1760, has an oval Hall of Mirrors decorated with stucco and gold in Louis XV style. In 2015 the comune opened it for civil weddings, together with the Sala Giunta.
The Loggia, the theatre and Palazzo Nicolaci
The same 2015 decision opened three more places: the Loggia del Mercato, an open-air gallery; the municipal theatre on Piazza XVI Maggio; and Palazzo Nicolaci. Ask the comune which of them it offers now, and on which days.
A church wedding
For a Catholic wedding in Noto, contact the parish of the church you want as soon as you have a date; the Church’s papers start in your home parish.
Farms and country houses
Outside town, old farmhouses and country houses host dinners in the open air; ask which have rooms for your guests.

Portraits
Where to take your portraits
The cathedral staircase
The cathedral stands at the top of a monumental staircase above Piazza Municipio. Late afternoon, when the stone turns golden, is the time; a summer midday is flat and hot.
Via Nicolaci
The street of the balconies: Palazzo Nicolaci’s six balconies rest on corbels carved as lions, centaurs, winged horses, chimeras and sirens, and the curved front of the church of Montevergine closes the view at the top.
The main street
The street through the centre, with church fronts, steps and palazzo doorways one after another: a portrait walk on its own, best early or late in the day.
Vendicari
A nature reserve on the coast near Noto: a lagoon, beaches, dunes, salt pans and an old tuna fishery, with flamingos among the birds that stop there. Ask the reserve about a session, and leave the drone at home.
Through the year
When to marry in Noto
For the weather we use Siracusa’s official station on the coast; the city is 32 km away (Aeronautica Militare, 1961–1990). Average highs are 23.7 °C in May, 28.2 °C in June, 31.3 °C in July and 28.1 °C in September; summer is nearly rainless (5 mm in June, on one day), and the rain returns in autumn, with 44 mm in September and 78 mm in October. May brings the Infiorata: in 2026 carpets of flowers covered Via Nicolaci from 15 to 19 May.

Getting there
Noto lies 32 km south-west of Siracusa. Catania is the main airport for this side of Sicily, and Etna’s ash can close it, as on 12 August 2026, when flights were diverted to Palermo, Trapani and Comiso.
In the centre
Everything is close, but there are steps — above all the cathedral’s staircase. Keep a car for older guests and plan shade for the waits in summer.
The Infiorata weekend
In 2026 the flower carpets were laid on Via Nicolaci on 15 May and could be visited from 16 to 19 May. Good for photos of the flowers, hard for anything quiet in that street.
Drones
Italian law bans unauthorised flights over parks and reserves; ENAC enforces the zones published on d-flight, and only the protected area’s managers can give permission — think of it at Vendicari. In town, EU rules forbid flying over gatherings of people.
The legal route
Each of you brings a nulla osta and you sign a declaration at the comune a few days before. Our guide to getting married in Italy sets out the steps.
Questions
Questions about marrying in Noto
Can we have a civil wedding at Palazzo Ducezio?
In 2015 Noto opened its town hall’s Hall of Mirrors and Sala Giunta for civil weddings, along with the Loggia del Mercato, the municipal theatre and Palazzo Nicolaci. Ask the comune which rooms it offers now; each of you needs a nulla osta and a declaration at the comune before the day.
When is the Infiorata, and should we avoid it?
It is in May: in 2026 the carpets were laid on 15 May and open from 16 to 19 May. It brings crowds to the centre, so if you want quiet streets, choose another weekend; if you want the flowers in your photos, plan around those days.
When is the light best for photos in Noto?
Late afternoon, when the soft stone turns honey and gold, and early morning, when the streets are empty. A summer midday is hard light on pale stone; keep it for indoors or the shade.
Can we take photos on the cathedral steps?
The staircase is a public place in the heart of town, and it is rarely empty. Portraits in a public place rarely need anything; for chairs, an arch or anything set up, ask the comune.
Is Noto too hot in summer?
July averages a high of 31.3 °C at nearby Siracusa, and summer is almost rainless. A summer wedding works with a late ceremony and plenty of shade; May, September and October are gentler, at 23.7, 28.1 and 24.0 °C.
