A five-towered Renaissance castle over a volcanic lake with no motorboats, on the commuter line from Rome, and a comune that lists every place it will marry you.
Bracciano stands on the south-west shore of the lake that takes its name, 49 km from Rome by the Lazio tourist board’s count.
The lake fills a volcanic hollow: 56.5 km², about 160 metres deep, 164 metres above sea level, shared with Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano, and since 1999 within a regional park. Above the town stands the castle the Orsini built from about 1470, on the site of an older fortress, with three outer walls and five towers. The Odescalchi bought it in 1696 and still own it.
The castle has long been used for weddings, and it was decorated for one: the Zuccari brothers painted rooms for the marriage of Paolo Giordano Orsini and Isabella de’ Medici. For a couple the appeal is simpler. Here the comune publishes its list of places, from its own council hall to the castle and the farms and estates around the lake, with one fee for most of them. The ceremony can be in the castle and the dinner by the water.

Ceremonies
The Castello Odescalchi, on Piazza Mazzini, is on the comune’s list of places for civil weddings and civil unions, and private events can change its visiting hours. Its halls hold frescoes, coats of arms and period furniture, and a hanging garden overlooks the lake. It is privately owned, so its rooms, capacities and terms are for the castle to tell you; the comune’s fee for a civil ceremony in an authorised place is separate.
The council chamber of the Palazzo Comunale, on Piazza IV Novembre, and the conference hall of the Archivio Storico, on Piazza Mazzini, the castle’s own square. The fee is €500 if you live in Bracciano and €700 if you don’t (Giunta deliberation of 30 October 2018). Agree the day and hour with the registry office, by email only.
A cloister in via Umberto I, also used for summer concerts: €600 for residents, €1,000 for non-residents. It is the comune’s one open-air place of its own, so ask what happens if it rains.
The comune’s list also has the Antiche Scuderie Odescalchi, the Tenuta di San Liberato, Villa Stella del Lago, a hotel-restaurant and three agriturismi. A legal ceremony in any of them carries the same €500 or €700, and the comune holds these only outside its working hours.
The comune asks for a request from the parish priest of Bracciano to start the banns for a religious wedding. Santo Stefano, the collegiate church, is the main church of the old centre. No parish page gives rules for couples from elsewhere, so write to it first.

Portraits
The towers are linked by a patrol walkway, and the hanging garden, with its two cedars of Lebanon, looks over the lake. The inside is a visit with a ticket and its own hours: ask the castle what a photographer may do there.
Long, flat water with the hills of the far shore behind it, and often a sail or two. Bracciano faces north-east across the water, so at the end of the day the sun is behind the town and the light falls on the opposite shore.
Anguillara Sabazia, on the south-east shore, looks the other way, north-west across the water, where the June sun goes down: on 15 June 2027 it sets at about 20:49, with golden light from about 20:07 to 21:10 (NOAA’s solar equations).
The medieval centre, with its narrow lanes, lies around the castle, and the Sentinella belvedere looks out over the lake: places for a few portraits after a ceremony in the castle or the comune’s halls.
Through the year
The station is right on the lake: Vigna di Valle (270 m, Aeronautica Militare normals 1981–2010) averages highs of 21.6 °C in May, 25.8 °C in June and 24.8 °C in September, with July and August at 29.3 °C. Rain is lowest in high summer: 39 mm on about 5 days in June, 26.6 mm on about 2 in July. It rises sharply in autumn, to 89.4 mm on about 7 days in September and 153.7 mm on about 9 in October, so keep an indoor plan from September on. On 15 September 2027 the sun sets at 19:22, with golden light from 18:45 to 19:39 (NOAA’s solar equations).

Practical
Bracciano’s station, on via Odescalchi in the town, is served by the FL3 regional line on the Rome–Capranica–Viterbo railway, so guests can come from Rome by train; check the timetable for the evening. The tourist board gives 49 km from Rome by road.
For a ceremony at the Palazzo Comunale, the comune has a form for a temporary permit to enter and park in Piazza IV Novembre, listing each car and its number plate, with a payment of €25. Ask for it in good time.
A regional law bans motorboats, apart from licensed fishermen and the passenger boat Sabazia II, which runs seasonally between the three towns, so a boat arrival means sail or oars. The lake and its shores are in the Bracciano-Martignano park, which publishes no rule on ceremonies or shoots. Ask its office in via Saffi before setting anything up on the shore.
Anywhere in Italy a drone may not fly above 120 metres or over a gathering of people. Bracciano’s lake is a protected area, so have your photographer ask the park before flying, and the castle before flying near it.
A foreign partner needs a nulla osta from their embassy or consulate, stamped by the Prefettura if their country isn’t in the 1980 Munich Convention, or a certificate of capacity if it is. Our guide to getting married in Italy sets out the steps.
Questions
Yes: the Castello Odescalchi is on the comune’s list of places for civil weddings and civil unions. You agree the date with both the castle, which is privately owned, and the registry office, and the comune’s fee is €500 for residents and €700 for non-residents, outside its working hours.
In the council chamber, the Archivio Storico’s hall or an authorised private venue, the comune charges €500 if you live in Bracciano and €700 if you don’t; in the Chiostro degli Agostiniani, €600 and €1,000. These fees date from 2018, and private venues charge for their own spaces on top.
Italy gives same-sex couples a civil union (unione civile), not marriage. The comune’s list of places covers both, so the same rooms and venues are open to you.
Only under sail or oars: a regional law bans motorboats on the lake, except licensed fishermen and the seasonal passenger boat. Ask the Bracciano-Martignano park about anything you plan to set up on the shore.
Bracciano is on the south-west shore, so its sun sets behind the town and lights the far side. For the June sun going down over the water, go to Anguillara Sabazia on the south-east shore; on 15 June 2027 it sets at about 20:49.
June: an average high of about 26 °C at the lake’s station and rain on about five days. May is cooler, July and August reach 29 °C, and September is still warm but much wetter, with October the rainiest of these months.
