Getting married in the Langhe
Barolo country: steep hills of vines, castles on the crests and Alba below, where the white truffle comes to market every autumn.
The Langhe are the hills south and east of the Tanaro, in the provinces of Cuneo and Asti. Alba, a town of about 31,000 people on the river, is the area’s main town; a few kilometres south-west, eleven comuni share the Barolo vineyards — Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba and Monforte among them — and to the north-east Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso make Barbaresco, both wines from the Nebbiolo grape alone. The Langa of Barolo, the Hills of Barbaresco and the castle of Grinzane Cavour are three of the six parts of the UNESCO site of Piedmont’s vineyard landscape, inscribed in 2014.
Weddings here are about the land: a ceremony in a castle hall or a garden above the vines, dinner on a terrace as the hills go blue, the guests staying in farmhouses and wine estates nearby. The civil part is simplest at a town hall — Alba’s, or the castle of Grinzane Cavour, which is its comune’s council chamber — while a ceremony at a private estate is symbolic unless its comune has made it a place for weddings.

Ceremonies
Where couples marry in the Langhe
Alba’s town hall
Civil weddings in Alba are in the mayor’s office or the council hall of the Palazzo Comunale, on Piazza Risorgimento. For couples who don’t live in Italy, the comune’s fees (set in 2021 and 2022) are €300 in the mayor’s office and €350 in the council hall in office hours (Tuesday to Friday 9:00–12:00 and 14:30–16:00, Saturday 9:00–11:00), and €500 or €600 at the other set times; free if one of you lives in Alba. Ask the stato civile at least 30 working days ahead, and confirm the hours with it.
Grinzane Cavour castle
The castle where the young Camillo Cavour was mayor holds its comune’s weddings in the Sala delle Maschere, under a painted ceiling of 1547 with 156 “masks”; it is also the comune’s council chamber. The Enoteca Regionale Piemontese has been there since 1967, and the park can host events and catering in summer. In early November it hosts the world auction of Alba white truffles.
Barolo’s castle
The Castello Falletti, owned by the comune since 1970 and home to the WiMu wine museum, offers its Sala di Rappresentanza, looking over the vineyards, for the ceremony, the terrace or the Tempio dell’Enoturista for the toast, and the Tempio for the reception; with a month’s notice it opens even in its winter closure. Ask the comune of Barolo whether the ceremony there can be the legal one, or make it symbolic.
Serralunga d’Alba
The village’s state-owned castle hosts small weddings, civil unions, vow exchanges and symbolic rites in its garden, by the fireplace of the Sala dei Valvassori or in the hanging tower on the third floor, and welcomes couples for photographs. The comune’s own civil weddings are in the town hall: free if one of you lives there, €250 otherwise and €100 more in the afternoon, under its 2022 rules, booked 30 working days ahead.
Wine estates
Wineries with gardens and rooms host ceremonies and receptions among the vines — Fontanafredda at Serralunga, the estate King Victor Emmanuel II bought in 1858 for Rosa Vercellana, offers its lakeside garden for weddings. Check directly with each estate; sign the civil part at a town hall unless the comune has made the estate a wedding venue.

Portraits
Where to take your portraits
La Morra’s belvedere
From Piazza Castello, at 513 metres, the view runs over the Barolo vineyards to the Alps; the town’s bell tower of 1710, 31 metres high, opens at weekends from March to November. On 15 June 2027 the sun sets at 21:16, with golden light from 20:30 to 21:38 (NOAA’s solar equations); on 15 September at 19:40.
Barolo village
Barolo sits low, in a hollow ringed by hills like an amphitheatre, with its castle above the roofs; the castle’s third-floor terrace looks over the vineyards. The museum welcomes photographs, but not tripods or selfie sticks.
Alba’s old town
Piazza Risorgimento, which everyone calls Piazza Duomo, with the cathedral, the town hall and three medieval towers still at their full height; the pedestrian Via Maestra runs about a kilometre through the old centre.
Barbaresco and Neive
The two medieval villages of the Hills of Barbaresco, north-east of Alba, among vineyards that are part of the UNESCO site — milder and drier than the Barolo side, by the wine consortium’s account.
Through the year
When to marry in the Langhe
The wine hills are drier than Turin. Bra, on the edge of the Langhe (308 m, 1961–1990 normals), gets about 740 mm of rain a year: 60 mm on 7 days in May, 67 mm on 8 in June, 66 mm on 5 in September and 91 mm on 8 in October. Average highs are 26.2 °C in June, 28.8 °C in July, 23.0 °C in September and 15.9 °C in October. The harvest runs from Dolcetto in September to Nebbiolo in October, and the white truffle may be dug from 1 October to 31 January; Alba’s fair ran from 10 October to 6 December in 2026.

Practical
Good to know before the day
Getting there
Alba is about 50 km south-east of Turin and 47 km from Cuneo’s airport. The SFM4 line runs from Turin’s airport through the city to Bra and Alba, hourly on weekdays and every two hours on holidays. The wine villages are reached by road — plan cars or a driver for the guests; a bus line links Bra, La Morra and Alba.
Alba’s pedestrian centre
Alba’s historic centre is a pedestrian area around the clock, with cameras at its gates. Cars for a wedding need a permit requested in advance — at most three per ceremony.
Truffle-fair weekends
The fair brings crowds to Alba, at weekends above all, and its medieval pageants take over the squares: in 2026 the Podestà’s investiture, the draw of the donkeys and the Baccanale dei Borghi filled Piazza Risorgimento and the old centre on weekends from late September to late October. Check the fair’s calendar before choosing a date in Alba.
Vineyards and drones
The vineyards are private farmland: ask the owner, or let the estate or your photographer arrange it, and keep to the tracks — above all during the harvest. A drone may not fly over a gathering of people, and the operator must check the D-Flight map before every flight.
The legal route
Foreign partners need a nulla osta from their consulate, legalised at the Prefettura di Cuneo unless a convention exempts it, or the multilingual certificate of capacity for Munich Convention countries, and an interpreter if they don’t understand Italian. Our guide to getting married in Italy sets out the steps.
Questions
Questions about marrying in the Langhe
Can we get married in a castle in the Langhe?
Yes. Grinzane Cavour’s castle holds its comune’s weddings in the Sala delle Maschere; Barolo’s castle offers a hall for the ceremony and rooms for the toast and the reception; Serralunga’s state-owned castle hosts small weddings, civil unions and symbolic rites. Ask each comune whether the ceremony there is the legally binding one.
How much does a civil wedding in Alba cost?
For couples who don’t live in Italy, €300 in the mayor’s office or €350 in the council hall in office hours, and €500 or €600 at the other set times, under the fees set in 2021 and 2022; it is free if one of you lives in Alba. Book with the stato civile at least 30 working days ahead.
When is white-truffle season?
White truffles may be dug from 1 October to 31 January. Alba’s international fair ran from 10 October to 6 December in 2026, with the market in the Cortile della Maddalena, and Grinzane Cavour’s castle holds the world auction in early November. Expect crowds in Alba at weekends.
Is the harvest a good time to marry?
It is a beautiful one — vines turning gold and red, misty mornings — but the busiest for the wineries: Dolcetto is picked in September, Barbera at the turn of the month and Nebbiolo in October. Book an estate early and ask what the harvest means for your day.
Do we need a car?
Between the villages, yes: the train reaches Bra and Alba, and a bus links Bra, La Morra and Alba, but castles and estates are on the hill roads. Plan a driver or a shuttle for the guests on the day.
