Getting married on Lake Orta

A small lake under the mountains, an old town on its shore and, a few minutes away by boat, an island with a Romanesque basilica and a convent of nuns.

Lake Orta is 13.4 km long and 2.5 km across at its widest, just west of Lake Maggiore — and, unusually, it drains north, out at Omegna towards the Toce and Lake Maggiore. Orta San Giulio, a town of about 1,100 people, stands on a promontory of the eastern shore, facing the island of San Giulio across the water; on the wooded hill above it, the Sacro Monte’s chapels to St Francis, begun in 1590, are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The comune marries couples in the Sala Matrimoni of Villa Bossi, its town hall on the lake, and in the villa’s garden; the Palazzotto of 1582 on the main square can take civil weddings too. A wedding day here moves between the shore and the water: the guests cross to the island by boat, portraits wander the lanes and the lakefront, and dinner is on a terrace as the light goes behind the hills opposite.

Ceremonies

Where couples marry on Lake Orta

  1. Villa Bossi

The town hall, a 17th-century villa with a garden on the lake: civil weddings in its Sala Matrimoni or in the garden. For couples who don’t live in Orta, the comune’s fees are €600 Monday to Friday (9:00–18:00), €800 on Saturday mornings, €1,000 on Saturday afternoons, €1,200 on Sundays and €3,000 for an evening ceremony (18:00–24:00) on any day, paid through PagoPA when you hand in the documents (as published in March 2024).

  2. The Palazzotto

Built in 1582 as the seat of the Comunità della Riviera di San Giulio, the Palazzotto stands on the lakeside square; under the comune’s 2017 rules its hall may be used for civil weddings. Ask the comune for dates and terms.

  3. Villas and hotels by the water

Villa Crespi, a villa built in 1879, takes events with exclusive use for up to 70 people; Hotel San Rocco, facing the island, holds symbolic ceremonies at its Villa Gippini and has a hall for up to 115. Check directly with each, and sign the civil part at the town hall.

Through the year

When to marry on Lake Orta

Lake Orta has no weather station of its own; Verbania, 31 km away on Lake Maggiore (202 m, 1961–1990 normals), is the nearest with published normals, and it is wet: 154 mm of rain on 12 days in May, 153 mm on 10 in June, 109 mm on 8 in July and 164 mm on 8 in September. Average highs are 20.2 °C in May, 24.1 °C in June, 26.8 °C in July and 22.3 °C in September. Keep an indoor room or a covered terrace in the plan whatever the month. The public boat line around the lake runs from March to October.

Practical

Good to know before the day

  • Getting there

Orta San Giulio is 87 km from Milan, 45 km from Novara and 22 km from Lake Maggiore, by the comune’s own figures; Milan Malpensa is the nearest large airport.

  • Cars and parking

The historic centre, the island included, is a limited-traffic zone with camera-controlled gates; leave cars in the comune’s car parks at the edge of town, and let the wedding party walk down to the square.

  • Boats to the island

Motorboats cross from Piazza Motta to the island about every 15 minutes from 9:00. The basilica opens every day (in summer 2026 until 18:45, and on Mondays only from 12:15) but can’t be visited during services, events and concerts.

  • Drones

A drone may not fly over a gathering of people — not over your guests on the lakefront or the island — and the operator must check the D-Flight map before every flight.

  • The legal route

The comune asks for the delegation from the comune where the banns were made, ID for the two witnesses (one each) and your choice of property regime. A foreign partner needs a nulla osta from their own country (art. 116 of the Civil Code) and an interpreter if they don’t understand Italian. Our guide to getting married in Italy sets out the steps.

Questions

Questions about marrying on Lake Orta

Can we get married on the island of San Giulio?

The comune’s civil weddings are at Villa Bossi, its town hall on the shore, and in its garden; the island is a few minutes away by boat for portraits. We found no source that says weddings are celebrated in the basilica — ask the island’s parish directly.

How much does a civil wedding in Orta San Giulio cost?

For couples who don’t live in Orta, from €600 on a weekday to €800 on a Saturday morning, €1,000 on a Saturday afternoon and €1,200 on a Sunday; an evening ceremony costs €3,000 (fees as published in March 2024). Residents pay nothing in office hours.

Can we take wedding photos on the island?

Outdoors, quietly: the island’s lane is the Via del Silenzio, and its signs ask for silence. Inside the basilica, photography needs the abbey’s written permission, and it can’t be visited during services, events and concerts.

Does it rain a lot on Lake Orta?

More than in most of Italy: Verbania, the nearest station with published normals, has rain on 8 to 12 days a month from May to September, with July and September the driest at 8 days each. Always keep a covered plan.
